BMW Owners Manuals E46 from 9/99 E38,E39,E53 from 9/00 On 2001 vehicles without the diagnostic connector in the engine compartment, the use of the SIA reset tool is not possible. The service indicator may be reset using the reset mode in the instrument cluster. Reset procedure for high and low clusters with SIA III using the Reset Mode:

Tools Parts T-handle hex – 4mm none
Note: In most cases the alternator belt does not need to be checked any more. Early models should have the pulley and belt upgrade that came out a few years ago. Current recommendations are that the belt is installed and adjusted, then not disturbed until 36K when replacement is specified.

All BMW VANOS systems are operated through electric/hydraulic/mechanical control. Electric Control: The engine control module is responsible for activating a VANOS solenoid valve based on DME program mapping. The activation parameters are influenced by the following input signals:
• Engine speed
• Load (intake air mass)
• Engine temperature
• Camshaft position
• Oil temperature (MS 42.0 only)
Depending on the specific VANOS system, the solenoid valve is one of two types:
• Basic black/white (on/off) solenoid valve. Found on M50 TU and M52 engines.
• Variable position solenoid valve. Found on the M52 TU and M62 TU engines.
