  • Friend or Foe? Web 2.0 in Technical Communication
  • The rise of Web 2.0 technology provides a platform for user-generated content.Publishing is no longer restricted to a few technical writers—any user can now contribute information. But the information coming from users tends to be highly specific, whereas technical documentation is comprehensive but less specific. The two types of information can coexist and improve the overall user experience. User-generated content also offers an opportunity for technical writers to participate as “curators”—by evaluating and organizing the information provided by end users. Technical writers are accustomed to being the gatekeepers for product information. They carefully organize product documentation, online help, and other user assistance for their readers. Compare this to the chaos of the Web, where content is splattered across blogs, forums, wikis, and the like with little or no organizational scheme. And yet, readers are turning to the chaos of the Web for information rather than reading the online help. They begin with a Google search and work through the results until they find something relevant. User-generated content and technical documentation can be complementary rather than competitive. In this white paper, we explore the implications of user-generated content and discuss how technical writers can integrate this content into their overall strategy. Download pdf Friend or Foe? • Using Microsoft Active Directory Group Policy with Diskeeper
  • Diskeeper can be administered network-wide via several different methods. The primary network administration tool for Diskeeper is Diskeeper Administrator Edition, a single point of control for all your Diskeeper administration needs. However, sites using Microsoft Group Policy can use the Diskeeper.adm administrative template file available from Executive Software to control many aspects of Diskeeper operation through Group Policy. The Diskeeper.adm template file is available free of charge from the Executive Software web site at www.executive.com/diskeeper/grouppolicy.asp. Active Directory Users and Computers and the Group Policy Editor are the desktop tools used to administer Group Policy on your network. When the Diskeeper template is installed, these tools will allow you to configure Diskeeper options such as scheduling, defragmentation methods and defragmentation priority. Note: This section assumes you have a certain level of experience using the Group Policy Editor. Refer to the Microsoft Group Policy documentation for complete information about using the Group Policy Editor. 1. To open Active Directory Users and Computers, click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Active Directory Users and Computers. • Making 3d (2.5d) models of an object in 3ds max
  • Often a shape looks great on screen using max, but if you want to actually make it in 3d then it’s a bit tricky seeing as we don't have access to a rapid prototyping machine or a CNC mill, but we do have a laser cutter. So this explains how to turn a 3d studio model into a real thing made up of laminates of card, paper, ply, Perspex whatever you want. This tutorial assumes a basic knowledge of 3DS Max an AutoCAD. It’s worth using the measure distance tool in the tools menu to see how big it is, then measuring your hand or foot or something so you actually have an idea about how big it's going to come out. Once you are happy with an object that you have designed in max and want to actually see what it looks like then you need to make a decision about what you are going to make it out of. as the model is going to be made up of layers the thickness of the material will affect the curve resolution, there will be steps in one direction, so the thinner the layers the finer the curve resolution, but the more layers, so more work and more material. As the layers are going to sit on top of each other they will need to have some sort of key or registering point to make sure they line up in the same place as they did on the computer model. the easiest way
  • Content Management Systems for Mobile Tele-Education
  • Mobile communication is the basis for one of the fastest growing business areas at the beginning of the 21 st century. With IMT-2000 (International Mobile Telecommunications 2000), high-speed communication is possible anywhere, at any time, to any communication partner, with almost any device. As IMT-2000 comprises a set of different networking technologies, it provides a communication framework in which a subscriber may freely roam without having to be concerned about which network to use [1]. Hand-over procedures seamlessly integrate in-house networks, campus-based networks, metropolitan and wide area networks. However, the companies active in the area of mobile computing made huge investments to secure a place for themselves in the IMT-2000 business. These investments must lead to an appropriate revenue achieved by mass acceptance of mobile data services. The outlook is quite optimistic, as the number of worldwide mobile cellular subscribers rose from about 23 millions in 1992 to almost 700 millions in 2000. But mass acceptance must on the one hand be achieved by networking architectures offering adequate quality of service and attractive tariffs. On the other hand, services have to be provided that make potential customers subscribe to a mobile network provider. And as a killer application for IMT-2000 has not been found yet, experts believe that business will be driven by a mixture of applications. • Web 2.0 in 2008
  • Applications manufacturers today offer tools that allow companies to reap all of the potential benefits of Web 2.0. Behind most of these initiatives lies a simple yet very promising idea for the corporate world. Without installing “in house” software (that is under the cloud computing format), companies can capitalize on these free on-line services for a series of activities requiring coordination or collaboration. These include organizing meetings, sharing contacts and documents, and creating communities. Furthermore, integration with social networks allows companies to get to know their clients and their preferences better in order to choose the ideal candidates. In this sense, it seems logical to assume that Web 2.0 will undergo a strong new surge due to its commitment to mobility, and specific applications are already coming out on the market. In general, Spanish companies have been slow to jump onto the bandwagon. There are a few exceptions, though. One of the most noteworthy of these is Actibva, the Web 2.0 platform launched by BBVA that is designed to inform users about the evolution of financial markets and foment relationships among parties interested in savings and economic topics from the viewpoint of markets as well as the personal finances. BBVA’s team of specialized journalists selects news according to completely independent criteria and offers its own views in the Actibva blog. As such, users can vote on news items and introduce their own commentaries. Beyond this example, there are a few interesting Web 2.0 initiatives gathering force among younger Spanish companies.
