Bosch L-Jetronic Fuel Injection Guide FIAT Fuel Injected EnginesIn 1980 FIAT introduced a Bosch multiport fuel injection system in its vehicles. Introduced first on California-bound vehicles and, by 1981, on all U.S. vehicles, the Bosch system improved the performance, efficiency, reliability, and quality of engine operations. Solely responsible for a 23 horsepower increase on the 2 liter engines, this system, known as Bosch L-Jetronic, was popular not only on FIATs but on nearly every European car produced in the 1980's.
The L-Jetronic was the first mass-produced, fully electronic fuel injection system. Prior to L-Jetronic, mechanical fuel injection systems had proven that directly injecting atomized fuel into the cylinder resulted in better engine operation. Combining this direct injection theory with electronic sensors, valves, and meters - all controlled by a central computer - resulted in better operation than before.
The basic operation is straightforward. An engine is basically an air pump, drawing mixed fuel and air into the intake manifold, compressing it (followed by a spark-triggered explosion), and expelling it through the exhaust manifold. In a fuel injection system the entire operation is based on the amount of air entering the system. The engine pulls air through an air filter and into an air flow meter. The air flow meter measures the amount of air entering the system. Once measured, the air flows into a large hose that is connected to the intake manifold (a plenum). The intake manifold has a throttle plate that is connected to the driver's foot (the accelerator pedal). Wheel weights mounted on the inside of the wheel may need to be repositioned. The more critical clearance is the spokes of the wheel to the outer face of the caliper. Do not assume an 18, 19 or even 20 inch wheel will clear the outer face of the caliper. A minimum distance of 60.81mm, measured from the outer rotor face to the inside face of the wheel spokes. This is the net metal-to-metal measurement. We recommend at least 2mm additional clearance to clear the ST-40 caliper on our big brake kits. Wheel Spacers
Wheel spacers can provide extra clearance to the outer face of the caliper. This will also space out the entire wheel, widening the track width of the vehicle. Basic suspension settings will generally not be adversely affected by a slight widening (up to 3mm per side) of the track. Fender clearances should be checked on lowered cars, and longer lug studs or wheel bolts may be required. It is the responsibility of the customer to insure wheel spacers are properly specified and installed.

Analysis of these aberrations has revealed that y-coma in all three camera experienced a systematic change over the NICMOS lifetime in Cycles 7 and 7a. A similar variation has been found for x-astigmatism in camera 2. In camera 3, the x-astigmatism increased dramatically after the FOM had been given a y-tilt of 16 arcsec. X-coma and y-astigmatism in all cameras did not show substantial systematic variations over the same period of time. The results of this study should help to understand the origin of the NICMOS optics instability. They should also facilitate interpretation of possible changes in NICMOS cameras when they are back to operations after installation of the cryocooler in Cycle 10.

While the physical infrastructure to build such systems is becoming widespread, the heterogeneous and dynamic nature of the metacomputing environment poses new challenges for developers of system software, parallel tools, and applications. In this article, we introduce Globus, a system that we are developing to address these challenges.
The Globus system is intended to achieve a vertically integrated treatment of application, middleware, and network. A low level toolkit provides basic mechanisms such as communication, authentication, network information, and data access. These mechanisms are used to construct various higher-level metacomputing services, such as parallel programming tools and schedulers. Our long-term goal is to build an Adaptive Wide Area Resource Environment (AWARE), an integrated set of higher-level services that enable applications to adapt to heterogeneous and dynamically changing meta- computing environments. Preliminary versions of Globus components were deployed successfully as part of the I-WAY networking experiment.
