  • Web 2.0 for Content for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education
  • This report is the result of a study into the use of Web 2.0 technologies for content creation for learning and teaching in Higher Education, funded by the JISC, and carried out between March and May 2007. It draws on existing studies, interviews with staff at universities who have implemented Web 2.0 technologies for learning and teaching, and a week-long web based seminar (webinar) with expert contributions, both from speakers and the audience. The report builds on the briefing documents that were written especially for the webinar and the results of the webinar discussions, many of which can be found in the Moodle site that was used to support the conference. Web 2.0 will affect how universities go about the business of education, from learning, teaching and assessment, through contact with school communities, widening participation, interfacing with industry, and maintaining contact with alumni. However, it would be a mistake to consider Web 2.0 as the sole driver of these changes; in reality Web 2.0 is just one part of the Higher Education (HE) ecosystem. Other drivers include, for example, pressures to greater efficiency, changes in student population, and ongoing emphasis on better learning and teaching methods. Nonetheless, Web 2.0 is, in our view, a technology with profound potential for inducing change in the HE sector. In this, the possible realms of learning to be opened up by the catalytic effects of Web 2.0 technologies are attractive, allowing greater student independence and autonomy, greater collaboration, and increased pedagogic efficiency. • Processor Utilization with Microsoft ® Windows ® Media Center Edition on Systems Enabled
  • This document is intended for OEMs and system builders building systems utilizing the Microsoft® Windows® XP Media Center Edition (MCE) operating system. The P-state transitions (Cool?n’Quiet and AMD PowerNow! technologies) allow a computer to dynamically switch between different processor performance states depending on the processor utilization. In mobile applications these transitions can help extend battery life while delivering maximum processor performance on demand. In desktop applications they can reduce heat dissipation of the processor, resulting in less use of the fan and less noise. The document Microsoft Windows XP MCE 2005 Hardware Requirements (available from Microsoft) helps specify maximum processor utilization for various user scenarios. OEMs and system builders are required to measure processor utilization for Windows XP MCE system compliance. OEMs and system builders must meet these requirements in order to receive the Windows XP MCE logo and to market their products as Windows XP MCE computers. • Design Compiler Reference Manual: Optimization and Timing Analysis
  • Pipelining is a technique commonly used to increase the throughput of designs that have deep levels of logic to meet high sampling rate requirements. The pipelining technique partitions blocks of combinational logic into n stages of equal delays, with the stages separated by banks of pipeline registers. Register balancing improves the performance of the pipeline design, by moving the registers through combinational logic, adding additional registers as needed, to reduce the clock period. In this chapter, you will learn about the following: • Basic Concepts • Considering Input and Output Delays • Handling Designs Having Hierarchy • Enabling Register Balancing • Inserting Pipeline Registers in a Design • Hints and Restrictions • Resetting Flip-Flops • Replacing Flip-Flops This chapter includes example methods of inserting the pipeline registers in a design through HDL and a script to convert simple flip-flops to asynchronously reset flip-flops. • An eye-tracking study of information usage in Web search
  • Web search services are among the most heavily used applications on the World Wide Web. Perhaps because search is used in such a huge variety of tasks and contexts, the user interface must strike a careful balance to meet all user needs. We describe a study that used eye tracking methodologies to explore the effects of changes in the presentation of search results. We found that adding information to the contextual snippet significantly improved performance for informational tasks but degraded performance for navigational tasks. We discuss possible reasons for this difference and the design implications for the better presentation of search results. As an increasingly large fraction of human knowledge migrates to the World Wide Web and other information systems, finding useful information is simultaneously more important and much more difficult. In 2000, Jansen and Pooch estimated that 1 in 28 Web pages that users viewed were search results pages [11]. Today, search is among the most important activities that Web users engage in. Beyond the Web, search is a central activity for users of corporate intranets, specialized databases (from shopping to Medline), and increasingly for personal archives of documents and email. Given the importance and ubiquity of search, it is remarkable how similar almost all search interfaces are. Users typically type a few words into a query box and receive a rank-ordered list of search results comprising document titles, brief descriptions of the objects and some metadata about the results. On the Web, such interfaces are extremely effective, considering the incredibly
