  • Dealing with Facebook Phenomenon Effectively
  • The tone of recent news stories about the dangers of Facebook has been quite hysterical and many IT directors can be forgiven for feeling under threat from the phenomenon. But is a blanket ban for the site the best approach or merely a knee-jerk reaction, perhaps a more tailored approach with network management tools is appropriate? Dangers come in threes In some regards, IT directors are right to be anxious. Facebook usage is horribly addictive and many users admit to spending at least two hours a day on the site during working hours. Not only is this a massive drain on productivity, it also hits company resources hard and opens up some significant security threats to boot. Estimates from some organisations are quite alarming; a figure of £130m per day in lost productivity for UK businesses has been widely referenced and this is probably the key reason why 50% of employers have now banned the site completely. 192.com, the search engine, decided to prohibit the site completely after it was discovered that add-on applications used by ‘Facebookers’ were absorbing 40% of the company’s available internet connection. Hackers have of course cottoned onto the infiltration opportunities that Facebook presents and the coming months will doubtless see an increasing number of security scares. Personal security is also a potential minefield as many users are blithely sharing personal information on Facebook which could fuel identity theft and phishing attacks. News now comes that Facebook has agreed a deal to make users’ names and photos available on

  • Protecting Microsoft Exchange
  • Though the technological reasons to protect Exchange systems may be self evident, there are quantifiable fiscal reasons to protect these messaging systems as well. The dollar value of any given data-set may be difficult to calculate, but the cost-savings of avoiding even a single Exchange outage can easily be determined. In most organizations, there are at the very least one or two subsets of end-users who cannot continue to work without these systems functioning. Even if these groups might not regularly produce revenue in the form of direct sales or billable engagements, salaries, benefits and fixed costs still accrue during an outage. Therefore, the loss of the messaging systems for even a few hours could easily result in thousands of dollars in budget outlay without recouping a single dollar in productivity. For revenue-generating groups, the cost of this downtime is even more easily quantifiable. Avoiding even one of these outages is not only a good idea for the IT department, but for the CFO's office as well. Complete protection of Exchange requires a lot more than management of on-site and off-site tape backups. While traditional tape backup is an excellent tool for long-term archiving, true recovery for the sake of business continuity requires real-time data protection which enables disaster recovery and high availability. Having a solution that is cost-effective, hardware independent and scalable is something every IT manager should seriously consider. This whitepaper is meant to provide a brief technical overview of Microsoft® Exchange Server 2000 and 2003 survivability requirements as well as present

  • OpenOffice.org 2.x Setup Guide
  • This document is designed to provide users with instructions on installing OpenOffice.org 2.x and its successors on their systems. Starting with OpenOffice.org 2.x, installation is done using the native installers available on each system. This means that installation only requires that you unpack the download image and then launch the local tool. Using the native installers will provide better upgrades et cetera. Language packs are mostly available from each Native Language Community and may also be available from http://oootranslation.services.openoffice.org/pub/OpenOffice.org/ plus the appropriate release. RPM-based Installation 1. Unpack the downloaded image into a directory. For example,Currently, the following command would unpack into the current directory: tar xvzf Ooo_2.0.xxx_LinuxIntel_install.tar.gz . 1. su to root, if necessary. 2. cd into the directory with the unpacked image. This could be RPMS. 3. Then execute rpm -Uvh *rpm for the standard installation in /opt. If you prefer to install in another directory, try rpm -Uvh --prefix // *.rpm or something similar. When relocating, only relocate the base rpms, in other words, do not include any user interface RPMs as these must go in their default locations for proper system integration. Note: Upgrade the core first and then upgrade the user interface. Separating steps 3 and 4 ensures a good upgrade. 4. cd into the desktop-integration directory and execute rpm -Uvh for the menu rpm that applies to your system. For example, on a RedHat-based system, you would use rpm -Uvh openoffice.org-redhat-menus-.noarch.rpm or similar. 5. Download and install any language packs needed for OpenOffice.org. For example, if you relocated Openoffice.org, you need rpm -Uvh --prefix ///
  • SAS Add-In for Microsoft Office
  • Each day business users everywhere gather, manipulate and report information using Microsoft Office applications. But in most cases, the data that is needed for analyses and reports originates in, or is analyzed by, systems and applications outside of the Microsoft Office suite. Business analysts frequently need access to large data sources that exceed the limitations of Microsoft Office tools. They also may need access to sophisticated analytic techniques such as predictive analysis and forecasting capabilities that are not available in standard reporting packages. Yet they still need to present the results of their analysis in formats that others can share and understand. As a result, IT groups spend valuable time developing custom systems to channel data, reports and analyses from various systems into Microsoft Office documents, or integrating analytics into standard reporting applications. This leads to IT backlogs, long wait times for reports and analyses, and invalid analyses based on highly aggregated data. What if you could easily incorporate the powerful data management, analytics and reporting capabilities of SAS into your organization’s widely used Microsoft Office tools? With SAS® Add-In for Microsoft Office, you can. SAS Add-In for Microsoft Office is a Component Object Model (COM) add-in to Microsoft Office that enables organizations to harness the power of SAS analytics and provides easy access to data directly from Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
