  • Building Loyalty in a Web 2.0 World
  • Over the last decade, a radical shift has occurred in the way customers interact with the marketplace. The traditional mode of using defined channels of communication has given way to a broad array of connection points.Along with this shift, today’s customers have come to expect a higher degree of transparency from firms providing products upon which they rely. Companies that are unsure how to engage in the new paradigm often meet this expectation of transparency with mixed signals. As traditional channels erode, and a broader community ecosystem emerges, companies must rethink their loyalty equation by understanding how to engage in the new environment. The new environment can drive even higher degrees of loyalty through enhanced customer involvement in many crucial aspects of an organization, including customer support, product management and engineering and marketing. Forward thinking companies realize that engaging in this new ‘web 2.0’ world requires more than just enabling new channels of communication, it requires a set of powerful tools to coordinate and manage every relevant interaction while providing intelligent feedback to all participants.Architected to enable this new paradigm, a trusted knowledge management suite can serve as a core technology that drives better interactions with your customer ecosystem by building a collaborative environment in which insights, ideas and knowledge can be shared to the benefit of all. Ultimately, this vibrant knowledge sharing leads to greater customer satisfaction and increased loyalty. The role of the customer evolves For decades, the support and marketing relationship between a company and its customers was well defined. Companies historically

  • Photoshop Intermediate
  • This workshop is designed to expand on the concepts introduced in the Photoshop Introduction workshop by exploring more complex techniques along with some useful tips, tricks and features. Color Correction Photoshop allows you to easily correct problems in color quality and tonal range created during the original photography or during the image’s scan. You can also correct problems in composition and sharpen the overall focus of the image. Retouching techniques vary greatly depending on how the image will be used. There is also much to be understood about image resolution. For more information about image resolution you should refer to the Photoshop manual or attend the Academic Computing Services workshop Graphics Formats and Scanning. Color correction tools All Adobe Photoshop color correction tools work basically the same way: by mapping existing ranges of pixel values to new ranges of pixel values. The difference between the tools is the amount of control you have. For example, the Brightness/Contrast command (found in the Image>Adjust menu) makes the same adjustment to every pixel in the selection or image. Therefore, if you increase the brightness value by 30, 30 is added to the brightness value of every pixel. For more specific control of that, however, Photoshop provides the Levels menu that allows precise adjustment using the variables of highlights, shadows, and midtones. The Curves menu replaces high-end color correction systems and lets you isolate 16 ranges of pixel values between pure highlight and pure shadow. Download pdf Photoshop Intermediate
  • Apache POI - HWPF - Java API to Handle Microsoft Word Files
  • HWPF is the name of our port of the Microsoft Word 97(-2007) file format to pure Java. It does not support the new Word 2007 .docx file format, which is not OLE2 based. HWPF is still in early development. It is in the scratchpad section of the SVN. You will need to ensure you either have a recent SVN checkout, or a recent SVN nightly build (including the scratchpad jar!) Source in the org.apache.poi.hwpf.model tree is the old legacy code refactored into an object model. Source code in the org.apache.poi.hwpf.extractor tree is a wrapper of this to facilitate easy extraction of interesting things (eg the Text). Source code in the org.apache.poi.hdf tree is the old legacy code. At the moment we unfortunately do not have someone taking care for HWPF and fostering its development. What we need is someone to stand up, take this thing under his hood as his baby and push it forward. Ryan Ackley, who put a lot of effort into HWPF, is no longer on board, so HWPF is an orphan child waiting to be adopted. If you are interested in becoming the new HWPF pointman, you should look into the Microsoft Word internals. A good starting point seems to be Ryan Ackley's overview. This document contains a link to a detailled Word format description you can find somewhere at http://www.wotsit.org/. Please do not contact Ryan Ackley directly, because he is working for a company now that signed a NDA with Microsoft and thus he will be no longer
  • Chapter 7 - Programming in VB.NET
  • Visual Basic .NET (VB.NET) is an Object-Oriented computer language that can be viewed as an evolution of Microsoft’s Visual Basic (VB) implemented on the Microsoft .NET framework. The .NET Framework contains a virtual machine called Common Intermediate Language (CIL). Simply put, programs are compiled to produce CIL and the CIL is distributed to user to run on a virtual machine. VB.NET, C++, C# compilers are available from Microsoft for creating CIL. In DB-VA you can generate C# persistent source code and DLL files, so you can reference the DLL file and Persistent Library in Visual Studio .NET 2003 and develop the VB.NET application. In the following section, you will develop a VB.NET application. The application is exactly the same as the one in Chapter 4 – Developing Standalone .NET Application sample but this time you use VB.NET instead of C# for development. You need to download Chapter 4 sample application because it contains the DLL file and persistent libraries for your VB.NET project. Download pdf Chapter 7 - Programming in VB.NET

  • Cyrillic languages support in LATEX
  • Most Latin-based European languages were supported in LATEX by introducing the T1 font encoding and by using the fontenc and inputenc packages; these use only standard TEX means to support any 8-bit input encoding and this one standard font encoding. The restriction to a single font encoding guarantees that multiple languages can happily coexist in one document (e.g., hyphenation will be correct for all languages). Starting with the December 1998 Release, LATEX finally supports Cyrillic languages. This support is based on the new standard Cyrillic TEX font encodings—T2A, T2B, T2C, and X2. The first three of these satisfy some basic requirements for LATEX T* encodings, and thus can be used in multi-lingual documents with other languages based on standard font encodings. The reason why we need four different Cyrillic font encodings is that these font encodings support all the Cyrillic languages that have been used during the twentieth century (see Section 4)! The number of Cyrillic glyphs is large, so they cannot be represented with 128 character slots; the other (lower) 128 slots are reserved for Latin letters and other invariant symbols that are needed for the encoding to be a conformant LATEX T encoding. There are some glyphs in the T2* encodings which do not yet have associated characters in Unicode, the world-wide character standard. Also, one more font encoding, T2D, is planned for a forthcoming release of LATEX. A lot of Cyrillic input encodings are already supported (see Section 5), and additional encodings could be added easily. Download pdf Cyrillic languages
  • Creating a Footprint Map Using AutoCAD 2000 from an Aerial Photograph
  • AutoCAD is the world's most popular computer-aided drafting software product for the personal computer available in both DOS and windows by Autodesk, Inc. Anything that can be drawn on a drawing board can be drawn by AutoCAD. AutoCAD is an interactive drawing system designed to permit a user to construct or edit a drawing on a graphics display screen. It is similar to other word-processing programs except that in this case the thing being processed is a drawing. Each drawing is stored on a disk file, and AutoCAD is only able to edit one drawing at a time. An AutoCAD drawing is made up of entities. All the objects in the drawing space are considered entities such as lines, arcs, circles, text, and so on or blocks (which are groups of entities). The entities are defined geometrically in terms of the normal Cartesian coordinate system (right-handed system with positive X-axis to the right, positive Y-axis up the screen and positive Z-axis coming out of the screen towards the user). For example, lines are defined by their end- point coordinates (x, y and z), while circles are defined by their center coordinates and radius. Each entity also has certain attributes associated with it, such as line style, text font or color. AutoCAD organizes information in different layers like other programs like Photoshop and Illustrator. This means that any drawing entity can be assigned to any layer of the drawing. This allows separation of portions of the drawing. For example, all parcels could be assigned
  • Poking Facebook: Characterization of OSN Applications
  • Facebook is one of the most popular Internet sites today. A key feature that arguably contributed to Facebook’s unprecedented success is its application platform, which enables the development of third-party social-networking applications. Understanding how these applications are installed and used is important for the function and utility of web-based online social networks, e.g. to better engineer them and/or to design advertising campaigns. In this paper, we characterize the popularity and user reach of Facebook applications. We analyze application usage data gathered over a period of six months from Facebook and Adonomics - a Facebook analytics service. We also crawl publicly accessible Facebook user profiles and obtain per-user application installation statistics, for approximately 300K users and 13.6K applications. Our findings include that (i) the popularity of Facebook applications has a highly skewed distribution; (ii) although the total number of application installations increases with time, the average user activity decreases; and (iii) users with more applications installed are more likely to install new applications. Web-based Online Social Networks (OSN), such as MySpace and Facebook (FB), are quickly emerging as a new Internet killer- application. We can view OSNs as natural extensions of Inter- net applications that establish relationships between users, such as email and IM. However, unlike those applications, OSNs not only facilitate direct communication between users but also allow them to post content that revolves around their profiles creating online personas that typically map to their real life personalities. In addition, OSNs explicitly expose a user’s social contacts, enabling users to browse each
