MySQL is a Relational DataBase Management System (RDBMS) available from http://www.mysql.com. It’s released under GNU GPL for free depending on what it is used for. Check the licensing policy on the MySQL’s website. It works either as a server or a client on many platforms. A few other RDBMS exist as free software and we won’t make any comparisons since the choice of MySQL for this article is arbitrary. Neither will we compare to the big "commercial" guns such as Informix, Oracle, Sybase... It is enough to say that MySQL is probably one of the most widely used DBM on the Internet. For this article we’ll use the version 3.23.36 (again, arbitrarily). At the time of this writing, theComparing Java, C# and Ada Monitors queuing policiesConcurrent programming is still challenging and difficult. “Since concurrency techniques have become indispensable for programmers who create highly available services and reactive applications, temporal dimensions of correctness introduced by concurrency, i.e., safety and liveness, are central concerns in any concurrent design and its implementation” [Lea 98]. And without expert guidance and concurrent design-pattern description, they're expected to occasionally fail. Thus providing significant examples and paradigms for teaching good and correct style is of prime importance.
Learning concurrency paradigms is necessary but it is not sufficient. The choice of the run-time semantics must be known since it may introduce subtle design and programming errors. It is the aim of this paper to exemplify the importance of process queuing and awaking policies (whether processes are named threads or tasks) resulting from possible choices of the monitor concept implementation.
The languages Java, C# and Ada implement the monitor concept [Hoare 1974]. Several possible monitor concurrency semantics have been used in the past and a classification is presented in [Buhr1995]. Every implementation provides mutual exclusion during the execution of a distinguished sequence (synchronized method in Java, lock in C#, protected object subprograms in Ada) using a lock for every object. The semantics differ in the chosen policies for blocking, signalling and awaking processes.
The Java policy uses explicit self-blocking and signalling instructions. It provides “wait()”,“notify()” and “notifyAll()” clauses with a unique waiting queue per encapsulated object (termed “synchronized”). A self-blocking thread joins the waiting queue and releases the object mutual exclusion lock. The emphasis in class will be on general programming concepts, not on the workings of Visual Studio (often referred to as just VS), and the code you write will be virtually identical to code written by students using a Macintosh.
Note that currently the cluster and Lair (the Tressider computer cluster) computers do not have VS 2005 installed. They have VS 2003, but it does not have our libraries. We are hoping that we will have this fixed soon. We will make an announcement on the course website when we have a version of VS on the Stanford computers with our libraries
Getting Started
In order to use your PC to write the programs for the class, you will need to install both a compiler and the special 106 libraries for your system.
Step #1: Getting and installing the Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 compiler
For CS106X, we are using Microsoft’s Visual Studio 2005 compiler. The Precision M6300 notebook is here now to replace the older Precision M90 model and it is aimed at the business market.
