Microsoft Cuts Off Access To Old DocumentsTucked in with the many security updates (and the restoration of one's ability to paste text from a web page into a Word document!), a very interesting modification to the Office 2003 software waits quietly for installation with Service Pack 3. Unbeknownst to the user installing this “Pack 3”, their Office software is about to be imbued with a runaway power: the cutoff of access to your old documents.
With the blink of a 117 MB download (and an even lengthier installation process), Office users will no longer be able to open files in 24 older file formats. That means users – citizens, government employees, small business owners, etc. – will not be able to open their own documents saved in file formats used by Corel (Wordperfect), Lotus, and most versions of MS Office products before 2000.
Instead, users will see the not-so-user-friendly statement below:
"You are attempting to open a file type that is blocked by your registry policy setting."
When a user attempts to open one of these older files, they will receive the above in a dialog box and no alternative actions are given to help users get access to their information in these “blocked” files. When pressed for answers regarding this change, Microsoft eventually admitted that their action was in response to concerns with their parsing of Office 2003 code that presented a risk, but only after they suggested the move was in response to security concerns with the files themselves. Microsoft continues, in our view, to erroneously maintain thatGnuCash Help ManualWhat is GnuCash? GnuCash is a personal and small business finance application. With Visual Studio 2008, organizations will find it easier than ever before to capture and analyze information to help them make effective business decisions. Visual Studio 2008 enables organizations of every size to rapidly create more secure, manageable, and reliable applications that take advantage of Windows Vista™ and the 2007 Office system.
Visual Studio 2008 delivers key advances for developers in three primary pillars:
- Rapid application development
- Effective team collaboration
- Breakthrough user experiences
This white paper discusses the different customer experiences that deliver on these three pillars through the following seven technology areas.
- Developing Smart Client Applications. Visual Studio 2008 delivers new and easy ways for developers to build smart clients. It provides a comprehensive set of tools and classes that simplify integrating smart clients with new or existing Web applications, and it enables local data caching for disconnected scenarios.
- Creating Microsoft Office Applications. Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO) is fully integrated into Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition. Developers can now customize various Office applications, such as Outlook® and PowerPoint®, to improve user productivity and simplify deployment.
- Building Windows Vista Applications. Developers can easily leverage new platform technologies, and deliver more compelling applications to their customers, by effortlessly incorporating new Windows Presentation Foundation features into both existing Windows Forms applications and new applications.
- Handling Data More Productively. The introduction of Language Integrated QueryVeriSign Extended Validation SSL and Microsoft Internet Explorer 7World Wide Web’s secure backbone in over a decade
The CA/Browser Forum, a consortium of Certificate Authorities (CAs) and browser providers including VeriSign and Microsoft, recently created a new class of Web site identity authentication — the Extended Validation (EV) SSL Certificate standard. EV SSL Certificates require Web sites to pass a stricter identity verification process than required by traditional SSL Certificates. These new certificates also trigger a more noticeable secure user interface in the latest high-security browsers for visitors to Web sites with an EV SSL Certificate. The address bar in Microsoft IE7 turns a highly visible green color to immediately signal the presence of identity information. A field on the right of the address bar toggles between the name of the Web site organisation and the issuing CA, such as VeriSign.
The combination of rigorous vetting and the highly visible “green bar” interface should inspire a higher level of consumer confidence in the trustworthiness of a Web site — confidence that has eroded over time due to the dramatic increase in phishing attacks. Web sites with EV SSL Certificates are expected to see an increase in the number of transactions completed by consumers as a direct result of this increased level of confidence.
• Increases consumer confidence and trust
• Higher online transaction completion rate
• Competitive advantage versus sites without EV
• Strong defense against phishing attacks
Features
• Very visible “green bar” interface immediately identifies your site
• Security status bar displays your organisation name and your trusted CA
• Highest industry standard for identity authentication
•Mixing the Objective Caml and C# Programming Models in the .NET FrameworkThe .NET platform claims to be a melting pot that allows the integration of different languages in a common framework, sharing a common type system, CTS, and a runtime environment, CLR (Common Language Runtime). Each .NET compiler generates portable MSIL byte-code (MicroSoft Intermediate Language). By assuming compliance to the CTS type system, components inter-operate safely.
The .NET framework is actually well suited for object-oriented languages which have an object model close to the one of C# or Java. Unfortunately, languages with other kinds of object models, type systems or supporting different programming paradigms (such as functional programming .. . ) do not fit in .NET as well as C# does. Writing .NET compilers for them requires much more efforts.
However, the .NET framework still gives us a good opportunity to experiment interoperability between two languages as different as Objective Caml[1] (shortened as O’Caml) and C#. O’Caml is an ML dialect: it is a functional/imperative statically typed language, featuring parametric polymorphism, an exception mechanism, an object layer and parameterized modules. By achieving interoperability, each language gains access to a wider set of libraries and programmers take advantage of a richer programming model.
We use the experimental OCamIL compiler[2], which compiles the whole O’Caml distribution (including toplevel) to .NET managed code. We intend to communicate between O’Caml and C# by means of their respective object models. Difficulties arise because neither the type system nor the object model of O’Caml natively fit in the CTS. O’Caml objects cannot be directly compiled to CTS objects. Communication cannotPlotting Data with Microsoft ExcelHere is an example of an attempt to plot parametric data in a scientifically meaningful way, using Microsoft Excel. This example describes an experience using the Office X version for Macintosh. The details may change with different versions, but the principle stays the same – the author must control the appearance of all aspects of the figure. We cannot count on programmers to have correctly guessed our intended use of the application.
If you find that it is just too awkward to prepare a proper figure using a computer program, then do it by hand. If you use a hand drawn graph do keep in mind its purpose. If it is to be a working document, not to be presented or published, then you may want to make it as large as you can, ignoring margins, for maximum accuracy. For a paper or presentation, just keep the figure well within the margins of your sheet of graph paper, since the purpose is to illustrate the result, not to use the graph as a working document. You don't need to fill up all available space. If you submit a manuscript for publication or conduct a formal presentation, then you will probably have to prepare a computer generated figure.

If you haven't much experience plotting with Excel you might want to open a new spreadsheet, enter the data, and follow along with the example. But as you know using skelegons can be kind of cumbersome having to setup in modeler and convert in Layout then edit changes in Modeler if a bone was misplaced. LightWave 3D [8] introduced some full-fledged features to create and edit bones right in Layout, giving you full flexibility when it comes to rigging. Also introduced in LightWave [8] is IK (Inverse Kinematics) Booster which applies IK Handles on all created bones automatically. You can also apply dynamics to bones using this tool. N.B.
Inverse Kinematics The process of determining the motion of joints in a hierarchical 3D object given the desired start and end points, all the while obeying the laws of kinematics. Think of it like the strings on a marionette puppet or where the handles or the child bones themselves control the parent bones. Forward Kinematics Figure positioning by joint angle specification. Like posing a toy action figure or where the parent bone controls the child bone. LightWave Layout has two main bone tool categories • Bone tools found in the Setup Tab • IK booster
