  • Installing Fedora Core 1
  • There are three basic parts to installing FC: downloading and creating CDs, the initial installation process, and final setup. Fedora Core comes as a series of three ISO files, each about 650 MB in size. After downloading and verifying the files, you'll want to put them onto CDs. Most every version of Windows comes with CD-burning software, so I won't belabor that process here. It's not quite as straightforward on a Linux box, though, so I'll provide explicit details for creating CDs with Linux. Once you've got your three CDs, it's time to install. The first CD is bootable, so, assuming that your machine can boot from a CD, you just stick it in and restart the machine. A wizard starts, first offering to check the CDs for errors, and then guiding you through about 16 screens that allow you to configure your machine and set up preferences. Most of these screens can be navigated simply by clicking "Next", as the wizard will detect and display the appropriate choice for you. After completing the wizard, the installation starts, and you'll be prompted to insert CD #2 and #3 when necessary. Once all the files have been transferred and the system has been installed, the machine will restart and you'll spend a few more minutes making a few last tweaks and choosing settings. Upon completion, you've got a Linux box ready to go. Download pdf Installing Fedora Core 1
  • The Introduction of the OSCAR Database API (ODA)
  • ODA is an OSCAR Database API to make it easy for users to use the OSCAR database. When using ODA, there is no need to know how to connect the database or determine what its schema look like. ODA deployed on the OSCAR Subversion trunk uses Perl modules to connect, update, and query the database. Also, all the database subroutines for the end users are defined in a single Perl module, which is a collection of database subroutines and does the intermediate work between back-end database and OSCAR installation. As the previous paper showed, the old ODA has three problems. First, it can not fully support new features of OSCAR. Second, its implementation is overly complicated and takes a long time to learn and modify. Finally, its schema was also not well organized: 11 tables among 30 OSCAR tables are not used at all after OSCAR installation creates all the tables and numerous redundant shortcuts make developers confused in deciding what shortcuts should be used. OSCAR, therefore, needed more flexibility and a better organized database schema. The new version of ODA was developed not only to resolve the above chronic problems but also to establish a bridgehead for supporting OSCAR. It allows the OSCAR installer to add new features of the OSCAR sub-projects without modifying the whole OSCAR framework. The new version of ODA also makes it easy to participate in improving the database modules. The OSCAR sub-projects include HA-OSCAR [10] (High Availability, for mission-critical clusters), SSS-OSCAR [13] (Scalable System Software,

  • Standardisation and Licensing of Microsoft's Office Open XML File Formats
  • Extensible Markup Language (‘XML’) is a standard for describing content data in a manner that facilitates the sharing of such content across different systems and applications. Over the last 10 years, the XML standard has been adopted across a wide range of environments in the IT industry. Microsoft is one of many companies that is re-aligning its existing product range to take advantage of the flexibility of XML. One of its current initiatives is the standardization of the Office Open XML File Formats (‘File Formats’).This paper reviews the standardisation process that Microsoft has embarked upon and examines Microsoft’s legal arrangements related to intellectual property associated with the File Formats and the manner in which that legal treatment interacts with other products currently on the market. This paper seeks to address and we hope to clarify any misunderstandings that may exist in the industry, among policymakers and the wider general public, about both the standardisation process and the legal arrangements governing implementation of the File Formats by others. Overview of Office Open XML File Formats For a number of years, the software and IT industry has been moving increasingly from proprietary systems and formats towards ‘open’ standards. In the business applications software market, there are moves to establish ‘open’ file formats of various office applications, including word processing, spreadsheet and presentation products, in order to enable users to easily transfer their documents and data between different applications and to ensure that if their applications cease to be supported in the future that they can
  • CREATING A HIGH-KEY LOOK TO YOUR PHOTO – PHOTOSHOP TUTORIAL
  • In this tutorial, you will learn how to alter a typical color portrait so that it looks like a professional high- key studio shot. Here are the before and after photos: Open up the photo you want to use. Then desaturate your photo by clicking on Image / Adjustment / Desaturate. Now we will kick it up a notch by altering the curves. To do this, click on Image / Adjustment / Curves. You will need to adjust the input and output numbers of your curve. Hover your mouse over the diagonal line and then click once. The input and output number boxes will now be visible. Change the Input number to 171 and the Output number to 240. Then click OK In order to blur out the background a bit, we will add a Gaussian blur. First, make a duplicate of your photo by right-clicking on it in the Layers Palette You will now have two layers. The bottom layer is your original and the top layer is your duplicate. Now add a guassian blur to this duplicate (top) layer by clicking on Filter / Blur / Gaussian Blur. Change the radius to 30.0. In order to have just the background blurred and your subject’s features (eyes, nose, mouth) nice and sharp, we will add a layer mask to the blurred layer and erase some of this layer to expose the sharp image beneath. • Use XDoclet to Generate Web Service Support Files
  • Simple template to introduce XDoclet First template: XDoclet architecture Case study: Create Web Service Deployment Descriptor 1st try Case study: Create Web Service Deployment Descriptor 2nd try Summary and resources Use XDoclet to generate Web service support files ibm.com/developerWorks Presented by developerWorks, your source for great tutorials Section 1. About this tutorial What is XDoclet? You can skip this page if you already use XDoclet or already read the first XDoclet tutorial. XDoclet facilitates automated deployment descriptor generation. XDoclet, a code generation utility, allows you to tack on metadata to language features like classes, methods, and fields using what looks like JavaDoc tags. Then it uses that extra metadata to generate related files like deployment descriptor and source code. This concept has been coined attribute-oriented programming (not to be confused with aspect-oriented programming, the other AOP). XDoclet generates these related files by parsing your source files similar to the way the JavaDoc engine parses your source to create JavaDoc documentation. In fact, earlier versions of XDoclet relied on JavaDoc. XDoclet, like JavaDoc, not only has access to these extra metadata that you tacked on in the form of JavaDoc tags to your code, but also access to the structure of your source, that is, packages, classes, methods, and fields. It then applies this hierarchy tree of data to templates. It uses all of this and templates that you can define to generate what would otherwise be monotonous support files. Unlike the last tutorial on XDoclet, this tutorial does not focus on
  • DNA: variations on a theme in Maya
  • In this tutorial, we’ll explore different methods for modeling, rigging, and animating DNA. There are many ways to approach this macromolecule in Maya and each has its merits depending on what the model will be used for in your scene. We’ll start with a simple ‘plank’ DNA model that is roughly based on what is known about the molecule’s proportions, and then look at different ways to deform it. Next we’ll import a PDB coordinate set for B-DNA and experiment with different representations using particles. These first two methods assume that the helix does not need to unwind and melt. Finally, we’ll go over a programmatic approach to building DNA using PDB data for a single base pair – this method will allow us to twist and unzip the double helix. Modeling plank DNA In this first exercise, we’ll create a stand-in model for B-DNA that could be useful in schematic animations where atomic resolution is not required and melting of the double helix is not necessary. Here’s a quick overview of the process: 1) model a base pair with polygons, 2) animate its rotation and elevation to use the ‘animated snapshot’ tool, 3) create 2 NURBS curves slightly offset from the base pair, 4) use the ‘animated sweep’ tool to extrude those circles and create the backbone and finally 5) ‘duplicate special’ to create additional helical turns to the model prior to rigging. Although we’ve reviewed B-DNA’s characteristics above, let’s also have a PDB-derived cartoon model in our scene to make sure
