Often a shape looks great on screen using max, but if you want to actually make it in 3d then it’s a bit tricky seeing as we don’t have access to a rapid prototyping machine or a CNC mill, but we do have a laser cutter. So this explains how to turn a 3d studio model into a real thing made up of laminates of card, paper, ply, Perspex whatever you want. This tutorial assumes a basic knowledge of 3DS Max an AutoCAD.

Step 01
Linking an object to a dummy can be very usefull. For example if you want an 3D human model to open an door you need to link the biped’s hand to the door-handle. Linking a biped requires a different approach then a standard 3dsmax object. In this example we are creating a very basic scene with a biped object and a dummy object.

This tutorial will guide you through a method of creating a simple virtual reality model of a room, similar to the one shown here.

You will perform all of the initial 3D modelling using AutoCAD. You will import the AutoCAD model to 3ds max and set it up for exporting as a virtual reality model in the form of a VRML file, (3ds max has better tools built in for setting up and creating the VRML world file than AutoCAD.)

I’ve been a 3D Studio MAX user for over 5 years. It’s what I’ve always used. Once you’ve used a piece of software for so long, it seems difficult, sometimes impossible, to convert. The truth of the matter is that once you understand the basics of 3D graphics, the core of the problem becomes the specific software interfaces.

1. Create a ‘Helix’ spline object from the create panel. Make sure there are plenty of turns in it and that both radii are the same.
2. Add an extrude modifier and adjust the amount so it just about reaches the next coil, get it as close as possible but don’t spend ages doing it as step 4 will sort it out.
3. As you will notice the tube is inside out so add a ‘Normals’ modifier to flip them and turn it the right way.
4. Now as there is still a gap in-between the coils add a ‘Vertex Weld’ modifier and increase the value just enough to weld the gap together.

Grass Effect Tutorial

Hi. In this tutorial I gonna show Ya sum stuff about Maya PaintFX. There are various possibilities to use PaintFX. You can paint: attributes, expressions, scripts. You can also make your own script or expression and paint it on. In this tutorial I’ll focus on making grass, adding sum dynamics and animating it. So let’s get started.

Open Maya and create NewScene. I use the HotBox coz this is the best solution for me to navigating through Maya interface. You can use standard menu sets of course if you more like it :)

In this tutorial I will show how to make a quick water material in 3d Max. Keep in mind there’s no special plugins used, just 3d Max materials, which will render much quicker.
Open up the materials window. Pick a new material and change the diffuse color to a dark brown, so we can make some dirty water. Also change the “Specular” value to 90, and the “Glossiness” to 70.
Go down to Maps - bump change the value to 30, hit none and choose noise material. Change the X and Y tiling value to 2, also choose fractal for “Noise Type”.

Using Dosch Textures

Using Dosch Textures in 3D Studio MAX
In order to properly use the textures in 3D Studio MAX please verify the location (drive-letter; e.g. D: or E:) where your image-maps are located. Then open the File/Configure-Paths page in 3DSM, switch to the “Bitmap”-section and enter the path to the IMAGE-folder on your CD-ROM at the “Configure-Paths” setting If the Raytracer fails to find a texture in any of the 3DSM-default folders, it now automatically searches through the extra locations defined in the “Configure- Paths” on the “Bitmap”-page.
