  • Linking Oracle Tables to Microsoft Access
  • The Forest Service has the capability to access data residing in Oracle and other databases with Office 2000. Microsoft Access is part of the Office 2000 suite and has a strong ability to “link” to tables in other databases including Oracle. The purpose of this paper is to explain how to configure a PC for the linkage and illustrate how to make the connection. The primary benefit of using Access to manipulate data is its rich interface to quickly design queries, reports, and forms for data entry. The connection is done through the use of a standard called Open Database Connectivity (ODBC). This is a specification for accessing relational database’s that has been in existence for many years. Two additional software packages must be installed on the PC in addition to Office 2000. The software required includes SQL*Net (an Oracle product) and an ODBC driver (supplied by many software vendors). These additional software packages are already installed on Round 12 corporate PC’s as part of the software image. To get the software for earlier round PC’s, you must have your System Administrator schedule your PC for a software distribution from Missoula OSE (contact your System Admin). ODBC drivers for Oracle are included with the Office 2000 installation as well as from the Oracle package distributed by Missoula OSE. Download pdf Linking Oracle Tables to Microsoft Access
  • Introduction to Grid Commputing with Globus
  • Fundamentals and concepts Using the Globus Toolkit OGSA introduction Grid computing, most simply stated, is distributed computing taken to the next evolutionary level. The goal is to create the illusion of a simple yet large and powerful self managing virtual computer out of a large collection of connected heterogeneous systems sharing various combinations of resources. The standardization of communications between heterogeneous systems created the Internet explosion. The emerging standardization for sharing resources, along with the availability of higher bandwidth, are driving a possibly equally large evolutionary step in grid computing. The following major topics will be introduced to the readers in this chapter: What grid computing can do Grid concepts and components Grid construction The present and the future What the grid cannot do Download pdf Introduction to Grid Commputing with Globus

  • Learning Maya is Child's Play Article
  • When 15-year-old Daniel Grigsby attended the 6th Form Open Evening, an event showcasing pre-university courses available for study, he had no idea his destiny was about to reveal itself. He immediately headed over to the ICT (Information and Communication Technology) stand with an air of curiosity and child-like excitement. “What’s Maya?” he asked the man behind the stand, as he pointed to a small book on the table. “It’s computer animation software. Films like Spider-Man®, The Lord of the Rings™ Trilogy and many others use it to create all kinds of special effects,” was the enthusiastic response. “I want to work in special effects,” Daniel almost whispered. His eyes were dancing as he picked up the book and lingered over its pages. “Well, you’ve come to the right place,” smiled the man. That was a year ago and the man behind the stand was Rob Jones, Digital Arts Facilitator and Maya instructor at Lewisham City Learning Centre (CLC). Daniel has since worked on two animated films and is preparing to attend Bournemouth University, a leading school in computer animation. “When I met Rob Jones by accident, I was very lucky. I am now able to learn this sophisticated software long before going to university,” says Daniel. “Having this experience has given me the encouragement to work hard to achieve my goal.” Download pdf Learning Maya is Child's Play

  • Translution Web 2.0 Specifications
  • Most people’s experience of using machine translation (MT) to translate text from one language into another is likely to be by using either Google (www.google.com) to translate a foreign-language web page, or a service like Babel Fish (www.babelfish.altavista.com) to translate a block of text from one language. Using MT is becoming an increasingly common experience: today there are over three billion pages translated by machine from one language to another on the Internet every month. This is likely to increase as the number of people with English as their first language as a proportion on internet users continues to drop. But if you have used one of these services, you’ll know that the results are often far from perfect. These services generally convey the meaning of the message, but are rarely fluent and you certainly wouldn’t want to use them to translate an important document from your language into another! So if there’s so much of it being done, why is the translation quality poor? The reality is that neither Google nor Babel Fish are good examples of what MT can really achieve. There is nothing wrong with the underlying translation technology, but these implementations are simply doing a sentence by sentence translation without any additional processing. There are a number of ways in which the quality of an automatic machine translation can be dramatically improved today. These include: • Use of Dictionaries • Identification of words and phrases that should not be translated • Improving the translatability of the source language text • Not translating already translated
  • Coarse-Grain Parallel Programming in Jade
  • The goal of our research is to provide programming language support for exploiting coarse-grain concurrency, or concurrency in which each unit of serial computation executes at least several thousand instructions. There are two major reasons why automatic techniques that extract static parallelism from sequential programs cannot fully exploit available coarse-grain concurrency. First, only the programmer has the high-level knowledge necessary to decompose his program into coarse-grain tasks. This information is lost once the program is encoded in a conventional programming language. Second, it is some- times important to exploit irregular, data-dependent concurrency available only as the program runs. The large grain size often makes it possible to pro?tably amortize the dynamic overhead required to exploit this last source of concurrency. Download pdf Coarse-Grain Parallel Programming in Jade
