In a streamlined process, HP builds, delivers and maintains these clusters and supercomputers for the best total customer experience. Clustering
  • How a neural net grows symbols
  • Brains, unlike artificial neural nets, use sym- bols to summarise and reason about perceptual input. But unlike symbolic AI, they “ground” the symbols in the data: the symbols have meaning in terms of data, not just meaning imposed by the outside user. If neural nets could be made to grow their own symbols in the way that brains do, there would be a good prospect of combining neural networks and symbolic AI, in such a way as to combine the good features of each. It is argued that the secret of growing symbols in neural nets lies in cluster analysis. Algorithms for clustering, many of them naturally implementable in neural hardware, would produce clusters, which are discrete entities summarising data that have all the properties of symbols. The war between symbolic artificial intelligence and its neural net rival continues because each has strengths that the other lacks, and it has proved impossible to combine them successfully. It is agreed that symbolic systems work well on discretely structured problems, like chess, and give a transparent understanding of what they are doing, which allows their use in new situations through adding and deleting rules. But it is difficult to make them adaptive to data, especially in situations where there is only data to go on, and almost no understanding via rules, such as face recognition. Scaling up from toy to real problems is also hard. Neural nets, on the other hand, are strong where symbolic AI is weak, and vice versa. They adapt easily
  • Picture perfect The Audi A5 in New York
  • Photographer GABO staged and photographed the Audi A5 in Italy in the style of a road movie. On 3 April, on the eve of the New York Auto Show, the extraordinary photos of the new coupé were on display for the first time at the Audi Forum New York - some in colour, others in black and white; some in high definition, others coarse-grained. “When I photograph a car, I’m not just documenting its appearance. In my work I try to capture its personality and express emotions,” explained the artist. The Audi A5 and S5, which will be unveiled for the first time in the USA, were another premiere at the private viewing. An exclusive concert by English jazz musician Jamie Cullum ensured a feel-good atmosphere at the event. Exquisite creations by celebrity chef David Bouley were another highlight greatly enjoyed by the guests. In the limelight, however, was the new coupé - for chief designer Walter de’Silva the “most beautiful car” that he has ever designed. And, of course, GABO’s varied works of art: “For Walter de’Silva, designing a car is art. That’s why I had to photograph the A5 as if Download this Audi PDF Book

  • Friend or Foe? Web 2.0 in Technical Communication
  • The rise of Web 2.0 technology provides a platform for user-generated content.Publishing is no longer restricted to a few technical writers—any user can now contribute information. But the information coming from users tends to be highly specific, whereas technical documentation is comprehensive but less specific. The two types of information can coexist and improve the overall user experience. User-generated content also offers an opportunity for technical writers to participate as “curators”—by evaluating and organizing the information provided by end users. Technical writers are accustomed to being the gatekeepers for product information. They carefully organize product documentation, online help, and other user assistance for their readers. Compare this to the chaos of the Web, where content is splattered across blogs, forums, wikis, and the like with little or no organizational scheme. And yet, readers are turning to the chaos of the Web for information rather than reading the online help. They begin with a Google search and work through the results until they find something relevant. User-generated content and technical documentation can be complementary rather than competitive. In this white paper, we explore the implications of user-generated content and discuss how technical writers can integrate this content into their overall strategy. Download pdf Friend or Foe? • Concepts in Programming Languages Review
  • This book is concerned with concepts in programming languages, issues in their implementation, and how language design affects program development. It is aimed at upper-level undergraduate students and beginning graduate students with some experience in procedural and OO programming. Functional programming experience is claimed to be helpful but non-essential. As a teaching text, it competes with a similarly-named book by Sebesta, a book by (Wilson and) Clark, and others. Like most books in this area, it is mostly organised by concept (rather than by language), with a (here, relatively short) history of programming languages at the beginning. The “foundational” chapters are then concerned with computability, Lisp, syntax, semantics and functional programming. Next, a number of chapters deal with the traditional concepts in procedural languages, followed by a third section on object-oriented programming. The final chapters, as usual in texts in this area, deal with concurrency and logic programming (the latter chapter is by Krzystof Apt). As one might have expected from the author, this book is an extremely rich source of important information, subtle issues, and diverse and challenging exercises. This makes it an excellent text for further reading. As an introductory text, however, it is less suitable. This is mostly due to structuring and content, and partially to bias. As an example of problems with structure and content, consider (parametric) polymorphism. Chapter 5 uses the ML “length” function as an example (without giving its type), and mentions polymorphism four pages later as a subject to be covered in Chapter 6. Then,

  • Protecting Microsoft Exchange
  • Though the technological reasons to protect Exchange systems may be self evident, there are quantifiable fiscal reasons to protect these messaging systems as well. The dollar value of any given data-set may be difficult to calculate, but the cost-savings of avoiding even a single Exchange outage can easily be determined. In most organizations, there are at the very least one or two subsets of end-users who cannot continue to work without these systems functioning. Even if these groups might not regularly produce revenue in the form of direct sales or billable engagements, salaries, benefits and fixed costs still accrue during an outage. Therefore, the loss of the messaging systems for even a few hours could easily result in thousands of dollars in budget outlay without recouping a single dollar in productivity. For revenue-generating groups, the cost of this downtime is even more easily quantifiable. Avoiding even one of these outages is not only a good idea for the IT department, but for the CFO's office as well. Complete protection of Exchange requires a lot more than management of on-site and off-site tape backups. While traditional tape backup is an excellent tool for long-term archiving, true recovery for the sake of business continuity requires real-time data protection which enables disaster recovery and high availability. Having a solution that is cost-effective, hardware independent and scalable is something every IT manager should seriously consider. This whitepaper is meant to provide a brief technical overview of Microsoft® Exchange Server 2000 and 2003 survivability requirements as well as present
