Abstract We describe algorithms for real-time synthesis of realistic sound effects for interactive simulatio (e.g., games) and animation. These sound effects are produced automatically, from 3D models using dynamic simulation and user interac- tion. We develop algorithms that are efficient, physically- based, and can be controlled Download
  • Open source tools for content management
  • Information and documentation services available on the Internet through web servers are growing in an exponential manner. The logical evolution of the Internet over the last 10 years has been producing a replacement of static web pages and documents by dynamically generated documents. This is due both to user interaction with work processes and flows defined by service creators and to the availability of growing information repositories. This has meant a progressive evolution from a concept of web page publishing which was quite simple in its origins to more complex and differentiated schemes relying on procedures and techniques based on information management. The increasing complexity of services and systems supporting them has made it necessary to formulate a theoretical and practical corpus capable of combining classical information management techniques within organizations with the particular features of the digital environment. This evolution which has been accelerating during the first years of the 20th Century has had an impact not only information management methods and techniques but also on the very technology used for information management; and consequently the market for products and services (GILBANE, 2000). If it is true that during the second half of the 1990's we could distinguish between products for document management, information retrieval, etc., since the turn of the century there has been a convergence between all platforms. Nowadays it has become easy to find solutions that intend to be global and to provide support for the whole process of information management within an organization. The kind of
  • Using DBManager to Configure MySQL
  • It is sometimes daunting for a beginner to configure and use the MySQL database engine. A good GUI can help no end. My favourite Windows-based GUI is called DBManager, and is available from www.dbtools.com.br. This tutorial assumes you have read and followed my two earlier tutorials, on installing Apache and PHP, and on installing MySQL. Downloading DBManager After finding the www.dbtools.com.br site, and selecting either Portuguese or English, you need to find the Download link. There is only a free version available at the moment, so follow that link. You will be asked for a few bits of personal information, before you get to the download page. Installing DBManager Just locate where you downloaded the file and double-click. It installs quickly. Just note that the database server must be installed before DBManager. It should also be noted that DBManager will control PostgreSQL as well as MySQL databases. Download pdf Using DBManager to Configure MySQL

  • Replace with a database: O*NET replaces the Dictionary of Occupational Titles
  • O*NET, the Occupational Information Network, is replacing the Dictionary of Occupational Titles (DOT) as a source of occupational information. O*NET is a database—not a book, like the DOT. This database has the qualities of both an interactive library and a language. Serving as a library for information on the working world, O*NET allows everyone to access data on job characteristics and worker attributes. It includes information on the knowledge, skills, abilities, interests, preparation, contexts, and tasks associated with 1,122 O*NET occupations. Like a spoken language, O*NET acts as a medium for exchanging information. Workers benefit by exploring career options and learning which skills employers seek for specific types of work. Employers identify necessary skills to increase the efficiency of recruitment and training. Educational planners need O*NET to design instructional programs that teach the skills demanded in the workplace. O*NET has an organizing structure and a distinct vocabulary. An overview of the birth of O*NET precedes a more detailed look at its structure and content. Discussion of software applications that build upon O*NET follows. A final section tells how to obtain O*NET products. The table on page 4 and the diagram on page 5 highlight key points, and the sidebar starting on page 6 gives details on O*NET skills. Why O*NET? The Dictionary of Occupational Titles, first published in 1938, emerged in an industrial economy and emphasized blue-collar jobs. Updated periodically, the DOT provided useful occupational information for many years. But its usefulness waned as the economy shifted toward information and services and away from heavy

  • XOSD Guide and Reference Manual
  • XOSD is a system that displays text on top of the other windows, much like the on-screen display (OSD) used by most modern televisions and video-players. In typical open-source style, it was written to scratch an itch. André Renaud had just installed an infa-red sensor in his computer and was using a stereo remote-control to change what track XMMS was playing, but he could not see the track title from across the room. So André sat down and wrote XOSD to display track-names in XMMS. Over time features were added and XOSD became a stand-alone library, rather than just a plug-in for XMMS; eventually, XOSD 1.0 was released. Download XOSD Guide and Reference Manual
  • Web 2.0 tools and some things they could be used for: Community building
  • Twitter http://twitter.com/ – won’t suit everyone but is very good for little snippets, observations and off the cuff chats that the web has not really replicated until now. Could be used to build communities and for lightweight communication between projects. A useful feature is the use of hash (#) tags, placing the # at the beginning of an event or project tag to aggregate comments. Blogs – persuading projects to blog regularly is great for the programme manager, for a community of projects and for anyone interested in the project. A Project Manager’s reflection on the issue of keeping a blog: So is it worth it? Speaking personally and (for once) completely frankly, I’ve been quite enjoying writing, for several reasons. First, it has allowed me to do a bit of self-indulgent vanity publishing, something for which I criticise other bloggers but, hey, I’m a hypocrite! Second, the requirement to be reflective has made me think about various aspects of the project, which is no bad thing. Third, as it has turned out, I haven’t had to trouble my conscience by using buckets of whitewash to tell a positive story; the project really has been going pretty well. Ning https://www.ning.com/ – easily build your own social network, a good place for people to get to know each other online communities can be closed or open and communication can be public or private. Ning is also a useful tool to run before a workshop for participants to start thinking, and during the workshop for getting
