Lotus Notes Basics
To use Notes, you must have a user id (a small password protected file on your computer), and know your username and password.
The first time you open Notes, you will be presented with the following box; you must enter your password to continue.
To change you password, choose File – Security – User Security. Then click the Change Password button.
If you leave your computer, press F5 to log off/lock your computer. Locking your Notes display lets you protect your data when you are away from your computer, without having to close the databases you are working in. It is a good idea to lock your Notes display whenever you leave data unattended.

The was no release of a single new technology. There was no single economic insight or business model that completely disrupted existing markets. There was no industry consortium that defined a new standard. If forced to pick a moment, perhaps Google’s IPO will serve historically as the marker – in the same way that Netscape’s IPO’s is often used to signify the birth of the dot com era. At any rate, at some point over the past 12 to 18 months several factors have aligned and a there is now recognition that the companies and web services that are moving the internet market today share many common characteristics.
Formally, “Web 2.0” as a label was first used by Tim O’Reilly and Dale Dougherty of O’Reilly Publishing. The story goes that the two were brainstorming about the shared characteristics of today’s successful internet companies compared with the characteristics of the pre-dotcom bubble companies of 2000. Their brainstorming led to the birth of a conference – Web 2.0 (http://www.web2con.com/web2con/), which was held in October of 2004. The evolution of internet focused companies and services in the 13 months since that conference have helped to reinforce – and extend - their observations.
Web 2.0 Characteristics
Ultimately, Web 2.0 is an industry buzzword. Like any buzzword, it’s usefulness can be debated because they are easily mis-used and misunderstood. For me, it is best to think of “Web 2.0” as aShort History of STLIn October of 1976 I observed that a certain algorithm – parallel reduction – was associated with monoids: collections of elements with an associative operation. That observation led me to believe that it is possible to associate every useful algorithm with a mathematical theory and that such association allows for both widest possible use and meaningful taxonomy. As mathematicians learned to lift theorems into their most general settings, so I wanted to lift algorithms and data structures. One seldom needs to know the exact type of data on which an algorithm works since most algorithms work on many similar types. In order to write an algorithm one needs only to know the properties of operations on data. I call a collection of types with similar properties on which an algorithm makes sense the underlying concept of the algorithm. Also, in order to pick an efficient algorithm one needs to know the complexity of these operations. In other words, complexity is an essential part of the interface to a concept.
In the late 70’s I became aware of John Backus’s work on FP. While his idea of programming with functional forms struck me as essential, I realized that his attempt to permanently fix the number of functional forms was fundamentally wrong. The number of functional forms – or as I call them now – generic algorithms is always growing as we discover new algorithms. Now it’s a very rare day when these two constituencies can agree on anything, so imagine my surprise when both camps reached a consensus on the positive impacts that Web 2.0 services will have on non-voice revenues.
The operators expressed their envy and excitement about the pace of innovation and consumer adoption of Web 2.0 services on the internet, and with certainty predicted good fortunes and optimism for the entire value chain when these Web 2.0 services have been migrated to mobile.
Indeed this group isn’t alone in its optimism for this “Web 2.0 to Mobile” migration strategy. It seems not a month went by in 2007 without an announcement by a handset vendor, a mobile operator, a media company, or hundreds of entrepreneurial software startups, investing in technical and marketing initiatives and ultimately clamoring to align themselves with one of the Web 2.0 superstars.
Okay I admit it. I just don’t get it. Perhaps I’m slow because I’m Canadian, but I just don’t understand the business rationale or source of optimism related to this “Web 2.0 to Mobile” migration strategy.
