  • Jetspeed -j2o- The Web 2.0 Desktop for Portlets
  • Jetspeed j2o Desktop is a Web 2.0 solution for portlets. Combining server-side Jetspeed Ajax services with client-side services, j2o is a paradigm shift in the way portlets are viewed and aggregated. The key change here is that Jetspeed 2.0 is a servlet-centric application: every request goes back to the server. The user interfaces experience is driven by HTTP page paradigm. Jetspeed j2o Desktop is a client-side centric solution. The user interface is controlled on the client-side, where it intuitively belongs. Key features of the portal have been moved to the client side: 1. Page Aggregation 2. Customization The server-side does what it does best, model and persistence: 1. Stores the model and user information. Client-side Aggregation Each portlet in its own HTTP request. This request delivers the content for one portlet only. The portlet aggregation process is moved to the client-side. Client-side Customization The server stores the portlet definitions and page information. The client-side provides the tools to customize the user's desktop. Server-side Model The model is stored on the server-side in standard Jetspeed persistence stores. PSML is served to the client-side, where it is in charge of aggregating the page. The Desktop The desktop holds portlets that are displayed to a user. With the first prototype, a desktop is modeled upon a single PSML page Download pdf Jetspeed -j2o- The Web 2.0 Desktop for Portlets

  • Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP) Windows Interface Tutorial
  • This WEPP software consists of an erosion prediction model (WEPP) written in the Fortran programming language, a climate generator program (CLIGEN) also written in the Fortran programming language, and a Windows interface (WEPPWIN) written in the Visual C++ programming language. The interface accesses databases, organizes WEPP and CLIGEN simulations, creates all necessary input files for WEPP and CLIGEN, and executes the Fortran models when necessary. The interface also accesses and processes output information from the Fortran models for display and access by the user. Section 1. WEPP Software Installation The WEPP model and Windows interface can be installed from a file on a CD-ROM, or from the installation program downloaded from the NSERL web site. At the time of this document revision, the installation executable file was “wepp7-2002.exe”. Use either Internet Explorer or Windows Explorer to locate the installation file “wepp7-2002.exe” on your CD-ROM drive or in the directory in which you downloaded it from the NSERL Web site. Use the mouse to double-click on the WEPPWIN.EXE file. This will start the installation process. Download pdf Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP) Windows Interface Tutorial
  • Maya Tutorials - Realistic Snow
  • 1. Create a NURBS surface and deform it a bit to get a nice-looking bumpy terrain. Create a camera 2. Open the Hypershader. Create a Blinn node and edit it as shown below I highlighted in red the attributes that need to be edited. Don't forget the slight blueish Ambience, because snow is always a bit blue when in sunlight. Also add a light bump (on the example, I use the Turbulence texture, available in the highend3d.com library. Rename the blinn1 as snowBlinn. 3. Next, create a 2D Fractal texture and edit it as follows: This texture (fractal1) will simulate the ice crystals that glitter when lit. I use the 2D Fractal node cause it has a Time attribute that allows to phase it. You must also check the Animated box. The phase depends on the value of the Time attribute. This attribute will be later linked to the camera's position using an expression. Also check the Invert box. 4. Remap the fractal1 node (click the Insert button in the Color Remap field), and edit the Ramp as shown: Download pdf Maya Tutorials - Realistic Snow
  • FileMaker for PHP Developers
  • FileMaker is a popular and powerful desktop database application toolkit. Recently, FileMaker, Inc. released a beta version of the FileMaker API for PHP, which allows PHP to more easily talk to the FileMaker Server Advanced product. Learn how to leverage FileMaker’s strengths to deliver complex Web applications in a fraction of the time it would take using a typical SQL database. What is FileMaker? FileMaker is a workgroup productivity toolkit designed to let knowledge workers quickly and easily construct data management systems for themselves. It is often referred to as a database—which it is—but it is more than that. In order to give you a solid understanding of how and when to use FileMaker, I am going to run through a realworld scenario. Spreadsheet Headaches ABC Company sells office supplies. Their catalog team is responsible for publishing product catalogs that are distributed to the sales force for generating new business. Every week or so, the catalog team receives spreadsheets of products that need to be included in upcoming catalogs. Information and images for any new products must be procured from the product manufacturer. Once all the data has been gathered, it is entered into a page layout program and printed. The catalog team finds this process very frustrating, because the spreadsheets are more often similar than not. Any given item might be going into multiple catalogs, so any changes to the item price, for example, must be made in multiple spreadsheets. Even worse, the team members have to pass documents back and forth, making sure to

  • Jeopardy in Web 2.0
  • What on earth is Web 2.0? Web 2.0 carries a high profile and surrounding hype. Developers must surely be feeling the heat to quickly adopt the new second generation of dynamic, interactive and simple by design technologies. Web 2.0 is the term pioneered by O’Reilly for new generation Web applications.Live.com, start.com, Google maps, Google Docs, YouTube, Flickr, and MySpace are few examples. Adaptation of this technology vector has changed the web application development approach and methodology significantly.AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript), RIA(Rich Internet Applications) and Web Services form the core components of Web 2.0applications. AJAX delivers a rich user interface by displaying more dynamic content. Another common technique is Real Simple Syndications feeds (RSS), an XML based standard that allows subscribers to promote information feeds. This is most commonly used to subscribe to blogs and news articles. AJAX and Rich Internet Application (RIA) clients are enhancing client-end interfaces in the browser itself. XML is making a significant impact at both presentation and transport (HTTP/HTTPS) layers. To some extent XML is replacing HTML at the presentation layer while SOAP is becoming the XML-based transport mechanism of choice. With Web 2.0, the functionality and experience of the sites become the primary focus, and the technology empowering the dynamic content is hidden behind the scenes to the average user. Yet the web applications underneath the polished finish remain just as complex, and add a variety of new and often unproven or unsecured technologies to the back end. Worms like Spaceflash, Yamanner and Samy are exploiting “client-side” AJAX frameworks,
  • Building Microsoft Windows Versions of R and R packages under Intel Linux
  • It is simple to build R and R packages for Microsoft Windows from an ix86 Linux machine. This is very useful to package developers who are familiar with Unix tools and feel that widespread dissemination of their work is important. The resulting R binaries and binary library packages require only a minimal amount of work to install under Microsoft Windows. While testing is always important for quality assurance and control, we have found that the procedure usually results in reliable packages. Instructions on cross-building come with the R source [1] in files such as INSTALL, readme.package, and Makefile under the directory src/gnuwin32/. However, it took us a substantial amount of time to get things worked out, and we thought it might be useful to share our experience by by presenting an explicit example. In this document, we intended to automate and illustrate steps for obtaining, installing, and using the cross-compilation tools. hoping that it might save people’s time. These steps have been put into a Makefile, which accompanies this document, for automating the process. The Makefile is available from the contributed documentation area on Comprehensive R Archive Network (CRAN). The current version has been tested with R-2.1.0. For the impatient and trusting, if a current version of Linux R is in the search path, then make CrossCompileBuild will run all Makefile targets described up to the section, Building R Packages and Bundles. This assumes: (1) you have the Makefile in a directory RCrossBuild (empty except for the makefile), and (2) that ./RCrossBuild is
  • Advantages of Broadband Phone Services PDF
  • Why are so many people subscribing to broadband phone services, either as an additional phone line or as a complete replacement to their traditional phone service? The primary reason is cost. But as you will see, other advantages exist as well. Lowering Your Monthly Phone Bill What attracted most people to voip or Voice over IP, even when the quality was still questionable, was the fact that you could make free and unlimited long-distance calls. Now that the quality is good, and the calls are still relatively inexpensive, so much the better. How low is low? We examine different service plans available in Chapter 7, “Selecting an Internet Phone Service.” The bottom line is, you can get a broadband phone service with unlimited calling and no nationwide long-distance charges (international calls do cost extra) for $25–30 a month. How can broadband companies offer phone services more cheaply than the traditional phone companies? The following four primary factors make broadband phone services so inexpensive: - Infrastructure costs - Transport costs - Regulatory compliance costs - Taxes and fees Download Advantages of Broadband Phone Services PDF from informit.com
