  • Label Gallery ActiveX and DDE Programming Guide
  • The most common method of label print is directly from Label Gallery software using its GUI (graphic user interface). But sometimes there might be other requirements for label production. Label Gallery has a wide variety of connectivity and integration options so you do not need to use Label Gallery interactively, but through an ActiveX interface or Dynamic Data Exchange connectivity. Label Gallery can be used as a "print-engine" totally integrated to your custom application and invisible to the end-user eyes. Basically, the end user sees only your custom application that connects to Label Gallery and uses Label Gallery label printing power in the background. The purpose of this manual is to show you how you can control the Label Gallery software from your own application that will be deployed to the end-user. Everything you must know about integration of Label Gallery into your application is described in this manual. The information in this manual is for advanced users and application developers only. If you do not plan to write applications that use integrated Label Gallery to print labels, you can skip reading this manual entirely. If you are interested in Label Gallery connectivity and integration options in general, please refer to the White Paper covering these options. You can download the White Paper from Label Gallery website at http://www.satoworldwide.com/labelgallery/index.htm. All methods and properties of Label Gallery ActiveX object described in this document are available in Label Gallery Plus application. Label Gallery Plus application is available in many editions, like Label Gallery Plus, Label Gallery Plus
  • Create Ajax-style architectures with the IBM Web 2.0 Feature Pack
  • This article shows you how a Java™ 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) application was enhanced with an Ajax-style architecture by using the IBM® WebSphere® Application Server Feature Pack for Web 2.0. Learn how to combine Ajax-style architectures with an existing application without having to rewrite the entire Web application. You'll also discover some ideas on how to apply the Web 2.0 Feature Pack to your own J2EE applications for IBM WebSphere Application Server. The "Plants by WebSphere" application is among a number of samples that are provided with the IBM WebSphere Application Server Feature Pack for Web 2.0. The application exemplifies a typical J2EE application and how it can be enhanced with an Ajax-style architecture without rewriting the entire application. The sample application represents a fictitious online plant store where customers can order and purchase flowers, trees, vegetables, and accessories. Take a look at Figure 1, which shows the front page of the Web application Figure 2 illustrates the architecture of the application in its original form before attempting to add Ajax-style features. The architecture is intended to be fairly typical for a J2EE application running on WebSphere Application Server. At a high level, the application adheres to a Model-View-Controller (MVC) design pattern, which most Web applications follow on some level. A browser accesses the URL for the application, which returns a JSP-rendered HTML page. The browser issues additional requests to the Web application, and servlets are used to control the flow as users move through the purchase request. Enterprise JavaBeans (EJBs)

  • Web Applications With Maypole
  • The Maypole web application framework can be used on two levels: first, as a simple way to add an interface to a database (and not much else besides), and second, as a toolkit for building more sophisticated web applications. In principle, there is a continuum of possible usages between these two levels, but it seems best for the purposes of teaching to entirely separate them. In the first part of this tutorial, we're going to quickly dispatch the first level of operation, putting a front-end onto a database. Not only is this useful in its own right in many cases, it both gives a demonstration of the power and flexibility of Maypole, and provides a useful basis for showing how Maypole applications can be expanded. As many of you know, I'm not really a Perl programmer any more; instead, I'm a missionary. It's a bit of a strange job, since I don't actually get paid, but I get funded by various supporters. I have a very bad memory, and need to be reminded who my supporters are, how much they pay me, and how I need to get in touch with them to let them know what I'm doing and how their money is being used. This sounds like the ideal job for a little relational database, and so I drew up the following schema: Download pdf Web Applications With Maypole
  • The 12-in. PowerBook Thin and (Feature) Rich Review
  • Just 4.6 pounds light enough to carry most anywhere, yet hefty enough to convey a feeling of solid construction. I believe it was Walt Mossberg at The Wall Street Journal who best summed up the 12-in. PowerBook. It s like one of those all-metal Leica cameras that just reeks of quality. I have to admit having taken a roller-coaster ride of sorts in the past couple of years since Ap p l e i n t roduced its aluminum PowerBooks. I fell fir s t for the 17-in. model (such widescreen real estate), then swooned for the first-generation 12-in. model (a hot little number in more ways than one, espe-cially when you sat it in your lap), then decided that for most users the midrange 15-in. model is the perfect blend of portability and power. Along the way, I ve bought, borrowed or used just about eve ry combo of PowerBook features that Apple has built, and while I seem to have fin a l l y settled on the 17-in. model for my own use (I have one of the newer 1.67-GHz G4 PowerBooks at home), the entry - s i ze model is no slouch. T he old adage that you can never be too thin or too rich seems like a tailor-made description of what road warriors want in their laptops: thin, lightweight machines that are feature-rich and, of course, inexpensive. • Short History of Software Methods
  • This short history identifies 32 major classes of software methods that have emerged over the last 50 years. There are many variations of each major class of software method, which renders the number of software methods in the hundreds. This short history contains a brief synopsis of each of the 32 major classes of software methods, identifying the decade and year they appeared, their purpose, their major tenets, their strengths, and their weaknesses. The year each software method appeared corresponds to the seminal work that introduced the method based on extensive bibliographic research and the strengths and weaknesses were based on scholarly and empirical works to provide an objective capstone for each method. The 1960s were a defining period for the world of computers giving rise to what we now know as mainframe computers (Solomon, 1966). Think of mainframe computers as building-sized calculators, most of which can now fit in your shirt pocket and are versatile enough to run on sunlight. Of course, these mainframe computers gave rise to large scale operating systems requiring hundreds of expert programmers to produce over many years (Needham and Hartley, 1969). More importantly, high-level computer programming languages such as the Common Business Oriented Language or COBOL were created to help humans communicate with these building-sized calculators and instruct them to perform useful functions more easily (Sammet, 1962). The creation of these mainframes, their operating systems, and their high-level COBOL computer programming languages caused the North Atlantic Treaty Organization or NATO to form a new technical
