  • Webmonkey programming: PHP/MySQL Tutorial
  • Welcome to the third and final lesson for this tutorial. If you've gone through Lesson 1 and Lesson 2, you already know the essentials for installing and writing useful scripts with MySQL and PHP. We're going to look at some useful PHP functions that should make your life a lot easier. First, let's look at include files. We all know the basics of includes, right? Contents of an external file are referenced and imported into the main file. It's pretty easy: You call a file and it's included. When we do this in PHP there are two functions we need to talk about: include() and require(). The difference between these two functions is subtle but important, so let's take a closer look. The require() function works in a XSSI-like way; files are included as part of the original document as soon as that file is parsed, regardless of its location in the script. So if you decide to place a require() function inside a conditional loop, the external file will be included even if that part of the conditional loop is false. The include() function imports the referenced file each time it is encountered. If it's not encountered, PHP won't bother with it. This means that you can use include in loops and conditional statements, and they'll work exactly as planned. Finally, if you use require() and the file you're including does not exist, your script will halt and produce an error. If you use include() , your script will generate a warning, but

  • The Ten Minute Guide to Setting Up a Linux File Server with Samba
  • One of the common requirements in a Linux-based network is to include Linux workstations. There are a multitude of ways to do so; if this network also includes Windows workstations that are connecting to the Linux file server, you're likely already using Samba. This document describes how to have a Linux workstation access data on a Linux file server via Samba. Here's a quick tutorial to the essential steps involved in setting up a Linux File Server and having Linux workstations connect to it, using Fedora Core as an example. Why Samba? Although I've already explained that this paper is covering the connection between a Linux workstation and a Linux server using Samba, some folks may be wondering about the choice. "After all, Samba is used for connecting Windows and Linux machines. It's not necessary if you're just connecting Linux machines." This is true; there are ways, such as NFS, to accomplish this without Samba. However, this paper is based on the scenario that your network has Windows (and possibly Mac) machines as well, and thus the server already has Samba installed. In this situation, connecting Linux workstations to the server is relatively simple. How file serving works on Linux In Linux, the same general concepts apply. You create users and groups, assign users to groups, and then assign permissions to directories according to groups. The specific mechanisms work somewhat differently, of course. On the server, you'll use software called Samba that provides the functionality of serving files to users (much like Apache serves Web

  • Buying Tires Guide: How to Get the Right Tire for You
  • Due to the large number of factors involved (such as speed, road conditions, inflation, vehicle maintenance, your driving habits, temperature), it is impossible to predict a firm figure for expected tread life. Tires should be inspected regularly and replaced when the tire is worn down. 1. Checking for Wear Tires are worn out when there is just 1.6-mm (2/32-inch) tread depth remaining. This can be measured with an inexpensive tread depth gauge, available at most auto supply stores. In the absence of a gauge, here are two quick methods to check to see if your tires are worn down to the point of replacement. A. The Tire Wear Bars Tires are manufactured with “wear bars” (see Figure 1) that indicate when there is less than 1.6 mm (2/32 inch) of tread depth remaining. When the tread is worn down to the point that the wear bars are flush with the tread, the tire must be replaced. Figure 1: Tire Wear Bars Exposed Wear Bars (replace the tire) B. The Penny Test The Rubber Association of Canada suggests this simple test to measure the tread depth on your tires. Place a penny into a tread groove with the Queen’s head down and facing you. If you can see the tips of the crown, it’s time for a new tire. Figure 2: The Penny Test Crown Fully Exposed (replace the tire) The Autosmart Fact Series 2. • AccuRender Tutorial: Adjusting Exposure
  • An important thing to keep in mind is that light intensity can vary significantly within a model. Just like in real-life, if daylight is coming through a window and you look toward it, your eyes compensate for it and adjust. If there are lights on within the room, they can become add less to the overall room brightness if the light coming through the window is too bright. This complex, sometimes subtle, change is taken into account by adjusting the Exposure like an automatic camera. These adjustments take into account over- and under-exposure due to contrasting light intensities. These two images have the same lighting intensities in the model, but the sunlight coming into the room can be seen hitting the floor crisply only in the first rendering. This is because of the exposure adjustment, which compensates for the brighter spots by “stopping down” the camera lens. Download PDF for AccuRender Tutorial: Adjusting Exposure
