  • This paper will discuss the difficulties and methods involved in debugging the Linux kernel on huge clusters. Intermittent errors that occur once every few years are hard to debug and become a real problem when running across thousands of machines simultaneously. The more we scale clusters, the more reliability becomes critical. Many of the normal debugging luxuries like a serial console or physical access are unavailable. Instead, we need a new strategy for addressing thorny intermittent race conditions. This paper presents the case for a new set of tools that are critical to solve these problems and also very useful in a broader context. It then presents the design for one such tool created from a hybrid of a Google internal tool and the open source LTTng project. Real world case studies are included. Well established techniques exist for debugging most Linux kernel problems; instrumentation is added, the error is reproduced, and this cycle is repeated until the problem can be identified and fixed. Good access to the machine via tools such as hardware debuggers (ITPs), VGA and serial consoles simplify this process significantly, reducing the number of iterations required. These techniques work well for problems that can be reproduced quickly and produce a clear error such as an oops or kernel panic. However, there are some types of problems that cannot be properly debugged in this fashion as they are: • Not easily reproducible on demand; • Only reproducible in a live production environment; • Occur infrequently, particularly if they occur infrequently on

  • Emerging high-performance applications require the ability to exploit diverse, ge- ographically distributed resources. These applications use high-speed networks to in- tegrate supercomputers, large databases, archival storage devices, advanced visualiza- tion devices, and/or scienti?c instruments to form networked virtual supercomputers or metacomputers. While the physical infrastructure to build such systems is becoming widespread, the heterogeneous and dynamic nature of the metacomputing environment poses new challenges for developers of system software, parallel tools, and applications. In this article, we introduce Globus, a system that we are developing to address these challenges. The Globus system is intended to achieve a vertically integrated treatment of application, middleware, and network. A low level toolkit provides basic mechanisms such as communication, authentication, network information, and data access. These mechanisms are used to construct various higher-level metacomputing services, such as parallel programming tools and schedulers. Our long-term goal is to build an Adaptive Wide Area Resource Environment (AWARE), an integrated set of higher-level services that enable applications to adapt to heterogeneous and dynamically changing meta- computing environments.   • This guide assumes that the reader has a basic understanding of what ArcGIS and the .Net framework is, as well as a rudimentary understanding of how object oriented programming works. For more information about .Net and object oriented programming, follow the links in Appendix B. In order to program with ArcGIS there are two products that you will need to have installed on your computer. First, you must have either ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS ArcInfo or else have the ArcGIS Engine installed. Once these one of these are installed you will be able to run the code you compile in the ArcGIS environment. The other ArcGIS product you need is the Developer Tools for Microsoft.Net that provides access to the .Net framework and the functions that ESRI has made for .Net as well as the Developer tools that install an API for ArcObjects. It is also important to make sure that your software is up to date, which you can do by checking the ESRI website to see if there are updates or service packs for your software (this tutorial was written using ArcGIS 9.2 Service Pack1). The other major required software is a C#.Net compiler. I recommend using Microsoft Visual Studio, because ESRI has created various resources to make coding faster and easier for that environment. If you are looking for a free compiler you can try using the Microsoft Visual Studio C# Express edition, or the SharpDevelop program which is an open-source initiative.
