Interrupts give the processor the ability to respond quickly to its peripherals (such as the keyboard and the hard disk) and to the outside world in general. The processor uses a special register called the instruction pointer to keep track of the next instruction to be executed. A set of general-purpose registers are used for manipulation and temporary storage of any data used by the program.
