Interactive 3D models – From 3ds max to VRML PDFProducing 3D interactive models is becoming a greater challenge every day. Choosing the right tool to handle the modelling process is essential if the final product is to be a VRML world, which can satisfy the user’s desire for both interactivity and realism. 3ds max offers a potentially excellent development environment for creating high quality 3D models. This paper discusses how the tools and techniques available within 3ds max can be harnessed to produce complex interactive models, which are viewable with a VRML browser. 1. Introduction Chapters 1.1 and 1.2 set out the scope and motivation for this paper. Chapter 1.3 describes the working platform, testing platform and the software packages used in our projects. Chapter 2 provides a brief overview of 3ds max modelling software and chapter 3 offers an overview of VRML language. Chapter 4 gives a short description of what interactivity in virtual worlds means and considers the user expectations of interactivity.

When walking or running, the character should stay at a constant height from the FloorRef object. When jumping, the Character should increase it’s distance from the FloorRef object to give the appearance of translation away from the floor. Characters should ALSO have a “stationary root” that only moves relative to the floor reference (e.g. for walking, jumping etc.) but that does not move constantly (i.e. in an idle animation the root should not move). This is very important if you wish to use your Characters with the Virtools Mulituser Pack, or the dead reckoning algorithm used for predicting distributed objects will not work correctly.
In short: Make sure the (stationary) root element does not move at all when the character is in its default (’wait’ or ‘idle’) animation. For other animations make sure the root moves a minimum; in a walk animation along the Z axis for example, make sure that the root moves along the Z axis only - there should be no movement on the X or Y axes. Note: Ensure the animations you create are ‘real’ in the sense that the Character actually performs them and does not ‘pretend’ to perform them - e.g. for a walk animation you should ensure that your character actually moves (translates) in your modeling application, and does not perform the animation in situ (”on the spot” or “in place”).

1.) In a nutshell – you make a selection with the Patch tool or any selection tool, drag the selected area with the Patch tool, and upon releasing the mouse the healing technology will make the repair.
2.) The most important decision to make before using the Patch tool is whether to patch from source, from destination or from pattern. Before using the Patch tool take a moment to evaluate the image and image damage to decide which of the three options to use.
• Patching from Source = circle the damaged area and move the selection to good image information. Use this choice when the damaged area is uneven, ragged, and/or within similarly toned areas.
• Patching from Destination = circle good image information and move the selection over the damaged image area. Use this choice when you need to match a pattern or lines in the image.
