  • Advanced Tools for Operators at Amazon.com
  • Despite significant efforts in the field of Autonomic Computing, system operators will still play a critical role in administering Internet services for many years to come. However, very little is know about how system operators work, what tools they use and how we can make them more efficient. In this paper we study the practices of operators in a large-scale Internet service Amazon.com and propose a new set of tools for operators. The first tool lets the operators explore the health of system components and dependencies between them; the other monitors the actions of operators and automatically suggests solutions to recurring problems. Large-scale Internet services invest significant amount of time and money to achieve high availability of their service, typically in the form of labor-intensive monitoring and response teams. Despite the high human resource expenditures, software and hardware failures still occur, and the human-intensive approach to monitoring and troubleshooting scales poorly as the service’s complexity and workload grow [1]. We hypothesize that the right kind of visualization and automation can reduce the human effort required for monitoring and repairing failures, allow operators to more quickly recognize a problem as recurrent, and facilitate better knowledge transfer in quickly-growing or high-turnover teams. One of the authors spent three months working alongside the Amazon.com team responsible for real-time monitoring of hardware and software and for providing monitoring tools for the rest of the company. We collected quantitative data via interviews and surveys and analyzed the data in the trouble ticket database that contains information about

  • 2002 and Up Nissan Altima Short Throw Shift Adapter Installation Manual
  • The theory behind the TWM Performance Short Throw Shift Adapter is to adjust the point at which the shifter cable attaches to the shift actuator on the transmission. This adapter is fixed onto the stock shift actuator and the shift cable is attached to the adapter rather than the actuator. The new point of attachment is placed closer to the pivot or fulcrum of the actuator thus reducing the distance the shifter (inside the car) must move in order to engage a gear. Step 1: Remove the four bolts which secure the airbox to the chassis. Step 2: Unclip the MAF from the intake tube and remove the rubber tube connected to the air box. Then remove the airbox from the vehicle. Step 3: Remove the cotter pin that secures the shift cable to the shift actuator. Step 4: Remove the shift cable from the old shift cable mounting point. Step 5: Using the following diagram, place the TWM Performance Short Throw Shift Adapter onto the shift actuator. Download pdf 2002 and Up Nissan Altima Short Throw Shift Adapter Installation Manual
  • The Morrowind Animation Tutorial
  • Welcome, today we will be making this cute little fish come alive. Put the UltimaFish.bmp texture into your Morrowind/Data Files/Textures directory. First make sure that your model has a separate mesh for each body part. Also make sure that none of the body parts have the same name as this will cause major problems. The names are unimportant at the moment so feel free to call them what you like. 1. Position the creature properly. It is to be standing up, and should lie on top of the plane. Select All, and then rotate everything 90 degrees, and then move everything so it sits nicely at the origin. It doesn’t really matter of bits of the creature go underneath the plane. The plane is there to just remind you where the ground in Morrowind will be. 2. The next step is to merge the Root Bone from the file I have provided into your scene. This will give you the necessary Root Bone needed. So go up to File>Merge Select my file Object.max. A merge box will pop up, and highlight Root Bone and click OK. You should now see a yellow diamond at the origin and this is your Root Bone. 2. All good? Great. Now, we are going to use the Bind button and bind parts of the mesh together. Now, remember, one, and only one part of the fish’s body can be bound to the Root Bone. Binding is to make a body part move forward too when another part moves

  • IMAQ Vision 7.1 Development Module
  • The Vision 7.1 Development Module is for engineers and scientists who are developing machine vision and scientific imaging applications. The development module includes NI Vision Assistant 7.1—an interactive environment for developers who need to quickly prototype vision applications without programming—and IMAQ Vision 7.1 for LabVIEW, LabWindows™/CVI™, and Microsoft Visual Basic—a library of powerful functions for image processing. In addition, the development module includes NI-IMAQ 3.0, the National Instruments driver software for controlling IMAQ hardware products. This document outlines new functionality, system requirements, installation procedures, and descriptions of the documentation included with the Vision 7.1 Development Module. Refer to the readme.wri file, included with the software, for the most up-to-date information about the Vision 7.1 Development Module. • AutoCAD 2004 Command Aliases Tutorial
  • Command aliases are alternative names for AutoCAD commands. For example you can invoke the LINE command by entering L in command line. There is no need to type the complete name. Some commands have more than one alias. For instance CO and CP are both aliases for COPY. Some command aliases are longer than the command name. For example RECTANGLE is an alias for RECTANG. A good knowledge of command aliases can increase you speed in entering the commands at keyboard. Unfortunately the AutoCAD 2004 online help does not contain the list of command aliases. Below, you will find a complete list of command aliases as they are defined in the default AutoCAD Program Parameters file (ACAD.PGP). I will explain this file in a future article. • Compositing Reflections Tutorial
  • This tutorial allows for flexibility and extra control for compositing. I suggest compositing in After Effects rather than Photoshop, even though we're only working on one frame. After Effects has better layering options and it is much quicker to adjust things (Photoshop brightness adjustments are "permanent" unless you make an effect mask...too tedious!!!) Part I: Maya Setup camera, lights, and object Render object passes Render reflection passes Render occlusion pass Part II: After Effects Bringing in all the layers and setting blending modes Adding hue/saturation effects and adjusting opacities to "match the numbers" Render out the final frame Download
  • Why .NET Technology is Important for ERP
  • In the late 1990’s many ERP companies caught the web browser wave, undertaking projects to leverage the Internet and browser technology and even to convert their software to “lite-client” or web “portal” architectures. Unfortunately for some, .NET came on the scene too soon after this major overhaul. When .NET appeared, some were too technically exhausted, or inflexible, or still basking in the glow of their new “Internet-based architectures” to recognize and embrace .NET. Other ERP software companies were and continue to be simply too busy struggling to stay solvent during the devastating one-two-three punch of Y2K, the recession of 2000, and 9/11. They lack the resources to consider the complete restructuring of their products that .NET warrants. While Microsoft struggles to explain and market .NET, the changes at its core represent the biggest shift in software technology since the dawn of Microsoft Windows. .NET is the second shoe to fall in the Internet revolution, portending a whole new computing model emphasizing not just superficial trading of web pages, but cooperating and collaborating systems. For ERP vendors and their customers, .NET spells the future of enterprise software applications. And, as we will explore in this whitepaper, .NET technology points to a future that demands ERP software companies rethink and rewrite their base architectures. The Right Place, the Right Time: Accepting the Challenge In 1998, Intuitive Manufacturing Systems was a 4-year-old ERP company, following the industry leaders, investigating “lite-client” architectures and tools to move their ERP package into the Internet age. Intuitive’s investigation turned up
