  • Getting Start OJB
  • This document will guide you through the very first steps of setting up a project with OJB. To make this easier, OJB comes with a blank project template called ojb-blank which you're encouraged to use. You can download it here. For the purpose of this guide, we'll be showing you how to setup the project for a simple application that handles products and uses MySQL. This is continued later on in the next tutorial parts. First off, OJB uses Ant to build, so please install it prior to using OJB. In addition, please make sure that the environment variables ANT_HOME and JAVA_HOME are correctly set to the top-level folders of your Ant distribution and your JDK installation, respectively. Next download the latest ojb-blank and OJB binary distributions. You can also start with the source distribution rather than the binary as the unit tests provide excellent sample code and you can build the ojb-blank project on your own with it. The ojb-blank project contains all libraries necessary to get running. However, there may be additional libraries required when you venture deeper into OJB's APIs. See here for a list of additional libraries. Most notably, you'll probably want to add the jdbc driver for you database unless you plan to use the embedded Hsqldb database for which the ojb-blank project is pre-configured (including all necessary jars). • The Ten Minute Guide to Setting Up a Linux File Server with Samba
  • One of the common requirements in a Linux-based network is to include Linux workstations. There are a multitude of ways to do so; if this network also includes Windows workstations that are connecting to the Linux file server, you're likely already using Samba. This document describes how to have a Linux workstation access data on a Linux file server via Samba. Here's a quick tutorial to the essential steps involved in setting up a Linux File Server and having Linux workstations connect to it, using Fedora Core as an example. Why Samba? Although I've already explained that this paper is covering the connection between a Linux workstation and a Linux server using Samba, some folks may be wondering about the choice. "After all, Samba is used for connecting Windows and Linux machines. It's not necessary if you're just connecting Linux machines." This is true; there are ways, such as NFS, to accomplish this without Samba. However, this paper is based on the scenario that your network has Windows (and possibly Mac) machines as well, and thus the server already has Samba installed. In this situation, connecting Linux workstations to the server is relatively simple. How file serving works on Linux In Linux, the same general concepts apply. You create users and groups, assign users to groups, and then assign permissions to directories according to groups. The specific mechanisms work somewhat differently, of course. On the server, you'll use software called Samba that provides the functionality of serving files to users (much like Apache serves Web
  • The Neural Basis of Decision Making
  • A decision is a deliberative process that results in the commitment to a categorical proposition. An apt analogy is a judge or jury that must take time to weigh evidence for alternative interpretations and/or possible ramifications before settling on a verdict. Here we evaluate progress in understanding how this process is implemented in the brain. Our scope is somewhat narrow: We consider primarily studies that relate behavior on simple sensory-motor tasks to activity measured in the brain because of the ability to precisely control sensory input, quantify motor output, and target relevant brain regions for measurement and analysis. Nevertheless, our intent is broad: We hope to identify principles that seem likely to contribute to the kinds of flexible and nuanced decisions that are a hallmark of higher cognition. SDT: signal detection theory SA: sequential analysis The organization of this review is as follows. We first describe the computational elements that comprise the decision process. We then briefly review signal detection theory (SDT) and sequential analysis (SA), two related branches of statistical decision theory that represent formal, mathematical prescriptions for how to form a decision using these computational elements. We then dissect several experimental results in the context of this theoretical framework to identify neural substrates of decision making. We conclude with a discussion of the strengths and limitations of this approach for inferring principles of higher brain function. Elements of a Decision The decisions required for many sensory-motor tasks can be thought of as a form of statistical inference (Kersten et al. 2004,
  • Unisys and Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Speed Up the Process
  • Unisys and Microsoft have dispelled the perception that for high performance ETL, the only alternative is a UNIX-based solution. With SQL Server 2005 Integration Services, Microsoft and Unisys deliver an optimized ETL solution that will support even the most demanding enterprise Business Intelligence (BI) initiatives. They conducted a series of real ETL (Extraction, Transformation and Load) tests with Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Integration Services (SSIS, formerly known as DTS). Performance tests compared throughput, scalability and performance on both 32- and 64-bit processor configurations on a Unisys ES7000. SSIS demonstrated parallelism and the ability to utilize all available CPUs in multiple aggregation, parallel lookup and transformation testing. The testing extracted, transformed and loaded more than 1.2 billion sales and marketing order line items into a data warehouse in less than an hour. It processed one billion lookups over a dimension table with 100 million rows in just over 24 minutes, or about 683,000 lookups/second. Integration Services on a 16-processor Unisys ES7000 processed 16 parallel transformation workloads amounting to 14.84 GB of raw data in 8 minutes, a rate of 1.86 GB/minute. The test results documented in this paper prove that Microsoft SSIS running on an ES7000 server can take advantage of parallelism and multiple processors to deliver the extremely high rates of transformation throughput. Through collaborative benchmark testing and engineering, Unisys and Microsoft mitigate implementation risk by validating optimal performance and establishing best practices in system sizing and configuration to achieve high performance levels.
