Mapping MashupsAs part of a large undergraduate history course he teaches about World War II, Dr. Martinez developed a mapping mashup that he introduces to the 150 students at the beginning of the semester. The mashup, which works with Google maps, represents major events leading up to and during the war. Fundamentally, it’s a map, he explains, showing them on a projection screen that it works very much like the online mapping tools students regularly use. The map covers virtually the entire globe, and users can move around the world, zooming in and out, showing the area of search as a map, satellite images, or satellite images with maps, dates, and events superimposed.
When students zoom in on Europe, they see flags scattered around the continent and into Asia. Similar maps dot Japan, Southeast Asia, and the South Pacific. When clicked, each flag opens a pop-up box that names the location, explains what happened there and when, and shows a photograph of that site at or close to the date in question. Flags correspond to important battles, political events, treaties that were signed, and cities such as Vichy, the wartime capital of France. The text in the box also includes links to articles that talk in depth about what took place in each location and the significance of that event. Students can zoom in to particular locations and see satellite images of what the place looks like today. They can also get an idea about the terrain where soldiers fought and died.
DuringActionScript Coding Standards TutorialMacromedia Flash applications have generally been built without regard to particular standards or guidelines. While this flexibility allows for a wide variety of solutions to a problem, it also makes it difficult for anyone other than the author of an application to understand the code. Even the author may have difficulty reading his or her own code after it is written. If a developer cannot understand the code in an application, it will not be easy to debug the code, make changes, or reuse the application.
This documents outlines a system of best practices specifically designed for coding with ActionScript and building applications with Macromedia Flash. Applications that use these guidelines should be more efficient and understandable-and the underlying ActionScript code will be easy to debug and reuse.

However, if you need to update your plug-ins or if you have removed the required plug-ins, you must install the 3DS plug-ins again. To install plug-ins • Put the 3DS plug-ins files, 3ds.in.dll and 3ds.out.dll, in the Plug-in folder in the Life Forms program folder. Building Models for Animation Life Forms only animates segmented models. When you build a model that will be animated, consider how it is going to move. This helps you to determine how many segments the models should have and where the pivot points of each segment should be.

DownloadSwitching Office Suites from Microsoft Office to OpenOffice.orgYou've been thinking about it for a while. You've seen the PDF converter and sighed longingly; you've blushed before the skeptical glances of your open-source and anti-Microsoft friends who say "You're still using Microsoft Office?" you're looking at your budget and wondering why you would pay to get Microsoft Office 2007. And you've received Word 2007 files and haven't been able to open them, so you know there's going to be some file format issues no matter what you do.
But you haven't switched over to OpenOffice.org. Quite yet. I'm here to help. Think of this as a virtual guide, the written version of me coming over to your house on a Sunday afternoon to help get to know OpenOffice.org and figure out all the things you're not quite sure about. Sit down with this article this weekend and in a few hours you'll feel refreshed, open sourced, and able to hold your head high when you run into those roving gangs of open source supporters.
Why Switch?
You have your own reasons: price, or principles, or you're setting up a nice cheap Linux laptop for your daughter to use at school. Here are a couple things I like to talk about.
Spend your money on something important
I realize that since I'm targeting this article at individuals, that the upgrade or full price of Microsoft Office might not make or break you. But if it's you and your family; your small business; your volunteer organization that feeds homeless families...now you even more seriously needActivote Quick Start QuideActivote is Promethean’s integrated personal response system that is designed to encourage student participation and enhance learning. This could be as straightforward as determining whether pupils are following a lesson, or it could be the basis for planned discussion. And it's all done by asking students to make a choice and press a button. Capturing student responses when they are questioned can be a powerful tool in influencing the direction of a lesson or the planning of future work. Activote allows the answers of each pupil to be saved for retrieval later - individually or as a class. Results can also be exported to Excel for record keeping and further analysis where appropriate.
Flexibility is key in any learning environment, which is why Activote can be used in several ways. Integrated into Promethean’s software, it can be used ad-hoc, allowing teachers to ask unplanned questions as they occur. However, it also works effortlessly over any application or website. Similarly, teachers can choose between using the supplied pre-prepared content and easily making their own with the aid of the built-in Question Master Wizard.

Lisp is a programmable programming language. —John Foderaro In Lisp, you don’t just write your program down toward the language, you also build the language up toward your program. —Paul Graham • Lisp isn’t the only programmable language Ruby.
Rubyists have been rediscovering metaprogramming. • Ruby style and idioms are still changing and adapting. Rails leverages metaprogramming heavily. • To great effect! • Ruby is a natural for metaprogramming.

This article introduces the incredibly easy-to-use Ajax support that is part of the Ruby on Rails web application framework. This is not a step-by-step tutorial, and I assume that you know a little bit about how to organize and construct a Rails web application. If you need a quick refresher, check out Rolling with Ruby on Rails, Part 1 and Part 2.
Just in case you've been stranded on a faraway island for most of the year, here's the history of Ajax in 60 seconds or less. In the beginning, there was the World Wide Web. Compared with desktop applications, web applications were slow and clunky. People liked web applications anyway because they were conveniently available from anywhere, on any computer that had a browser. Then Microsoft created XMLHttpRequest in Internet Explorer 5, which let browser-side JavaScript communicate with the web server in the background without requiring the browser to display a new web page. That made it possible to develop more fluid and responsive web applications. Mozilla soon implemented XMLHttpRequest in its browsers, as did Apple (in the Safari browser) and Opera.
XMLHttpRequest must have been one of the Web's best kept secrets. Since its debut in 1998, few sites have used it at all, and most developers, if they even knew about it, never used it. Google started to change that when it released a series of high-profile webCreating a 3D immersive environment in MayaThe following tutorial will take you step by step through the creation of a natural environment in Maya. You will also setup a character inside the environment and to add interactivity in Virtools. This tutorial introduces you to Maya’s 3D Paint Effects allowing you to paint in 3D. A few strokes can paint trees, grass, flowers. The paint strokes from your brush are converted into 3D objects inside a 3D space. Maya’s ability to convert 3D Paint Effects to polygonal objects is helpful to create content for interactive environments. This tutorial requires Maya 5.0 and up.
You can control the strokes’ shape, color, density, while painting on the horizontal grid plane of the perspective view or directly on other 3D objects. Let’s grab a brush and start to paint trees and grass in 3D, let’s create the ground for your forest.

Open a new scene in Maya. Go to the top menu, select, “File” > “New Scene”. Select the “Modeling” module in the box located on the left of the “Status Line”. Create a polygonal plane for the floor of your scene. Go to, “Create” > “Polygon Primitives” > “Plane”
