  • Data traffic in telco networks grow much faster and correspond to an increasing part of profits in telco operators. Operator’s dependence on voice services only is quickly diminishing in favor of higher valued data services. As these operators leave their relative comfort zone of supplying voice services in monopoly or oligopoly constructs the need for agility increases.   • Building a Mini-Sumo Robot
  • Building a mini-sumo robot using the IntelliBrain™ robotics controller is a great way for you to learn about robotics and Java™ software development. The RoboJDE™ Java-enabled robotics software development environment (included with IntelliBrain) allows you to download the example mini-sumo robot application discussed here into your IntelliBrain controller. With RoboJDE you can modify the example mini-sumo application or write your own mini-sumo program to improve the competitiveness of the robot. Mini-sumo is a competition between robots based on Japanese wrestling – “sumo” is the Japanese word for wrestling. Similar to traditional sumo matches, two opponents (robots) face each other in a ring named a dohyo – see Figure 1. The object is to stay in the ring while pushing the opposing robot out of the ring. The robot that stays in the ring the longest wins the match. Mini-sumo robots are small autonomous mobile robots designed specifically for sumo style competition. The mini-sumo robot competition rules restrict the robot length and width to 10 cm x 10 cm, but do not restrict its height. In addition, the robot cannot weigh more than 500 grams. Unlike larger battle robots, mini-sumo robots are not allowed to damage the opponent robot, they are only allowed to push it off the dohyo. All the hardware components you will need to build the robot discussed here are readily available. A mini-sumo robot can be assembled in a few hours or less.   • Mixing the Objective Caml and C# Programming Models in the .NET Framework
  • The .NET platform claims to be a melting pot that allows the integration of different languages in a common framework, sharing a common type system, CTS, and a runtime environment, CLR (Common Language Runtime). Each .NET compiler generates portable MSIL byte-code (MicroSoft Intermediate Language). By assuming compliance to the CTS type system, components inter-operate safely. The .NET framework is actually well suited for object-oriented languages which have an object model close to the one of C# or Java. Unfortunately, languages with other kinds of object models, type systems or supporting different programming paradigms (such as functional programming .. . ) do not fit in .NET as well as C# does. Writing .NET compilers for them requires much more efforts. However, the .NET framework still gives us a good opportunity to experiment interoperability between two languages as different as Objective Caml[1] (shortened as O’Caml) and C#. O’Caml is an ML dialect: it is a functional/imperative statically typed language, featuring parametric polymorphism, an exception mechanism, an object layer and parameterized modules. By achieving interoperability, each language gains access to a wider set of libraries and programmers take advantage of a richer programming model. We use the experimental OCamIL compiler[2], which compiles the whole O’Caml distribution (including toplevel) to .NET managed code. We intend to communicate between O’Caml and C# by means of their respective object models. Difficulties arise because neither the type system nor the object model of O’Caml natively fit in the CTS. Provisioning of Reseller DBManager and End User DBManager If you want to have DBManager on your server, you must understand how AIT provisions this service. You must either have the Reseller DBManager, which is specifically for Server 2 accounts and above so that you can resell this offering to your customers, or the End User DBManager, which is specifically for Server 1 accounts. This feature can not be resold, since Server 1’s do not have virtual hosts.   • Web services, an emerging paradigm for architecting and implementing business collaborations within and across organizational boundaries, are currently of interest to both software vendors and scientists. In this paradigm, the functionality provided by business applications is encapsulated within web services: software components described at a semantic level, which can be invoked by application programs or by other services through a stack of Internet standards including HTTP, XML, SOAP, WSDL and UDDI [3,18]. Once deployed, web services provided by various organizations can be inter-connected in order to implement business collaborations, leading to composite web services. Today workflow management systems are readily available [6,49,59] and workflow technology is hidden in many applications, e.g., ERP, CRM, and PDM systems. However, their application is still limited to specific industries such as banking and insurance. Since 2000 there has been a growing interest in web services. This resulted in a stack of Internet standards (HTTP, XML, SOAP, WSDL, and UDDI) which needed to be complemented by a process layer. Several vendors proposed competing languages, e.g., IBM proposed WSFL (Web Services Flow Language) [48] building on FlowMark/MQSeries and Microsoft proposed XLANG (Web Services for Business Process Design) [71] building on Biztalk. BPEL [16] emerged as a compromise between both languages. The Business Process Execution Language for Web Services (BPEL4WS, or BPEL for short) has become the de-facto standard for implementing processes based on web services [16].
