The Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC for short) systems from Fujitsu are known for being very small and sleek with pleasant designs but without sacrificing computing power. Another important feature of this UMPC system is its price tag, at least $500 less than similar solutions from competing companies. According to the news site DailyTech, the LifeBook U810, or FMV-U8240 as it is known on several regional markets, packs quite a few features inside its tiny frame. The total weight of the device is almost one kilogram and that including the 5.6 inch widescreen format display capable of a 1024×600 resolution.
The processing capabilities of the LifeBook are centered around an 800MHz Intel mobile A110 processor backed up by one gigabyte of DDR2 system memory, while the storage space comes in the form of a 40GB hard disk drive. Integrated networking options are especially important for a mobile system so the Fujitsu LifeBook U810 comes with Bluetooth version 2.0 and EDR enabled as well as a wireless network controller, the Atheros Super AG 802.11a/b/g, while wired networks are accessible thanks to the 10/100 network interface card. One argument for teaching Java early is that it is better to use an alreadydefined language rather than attempt to subset a complex language. Although HotJava was the first World Wide Web browser to be able to play Java applets, Java support is rapidly becoming available in other browsers. Netscape 2.0 provides support for Java applets, and other browser developers have also announced support for Java in forthcoming products.

For example, on Unix you can run “jedit” at the command line, or select jEdit from a menu; on Windows, you can double-click on the jEdit icon or select it from the Start menu.
If jEdit is started while another copy is already running, control is transferred to the running copy, and a second instance is not loaded. This saves time and memory if jEdit is started multiple times. Communication between instances of jEdit is implemented using TCP/IP sockets; the initial instance is known as the server, and subsequent invocations are clients.
If you find yourself launching and exiting jEdit a lot, the startup time can get a bit bothersome. If the -background command line switch is specified, jEdit will continue running and waiting for client requests even after all editor windows are closed. When run in background mode, you can open and close jEdit any number of times, only having to wait for it to start the first time. The downside of this is increased memory usage.
When running on MacOS X, the -background command-line switch is active by default, so that jEdit conforms to the platform convention that programs should stay open until the Quit command is explicitly invoked by the user, even if all windows are closed. To disable background mode on MacOS X, use the -nobackground switch.
