This manual assumes that you are familiar with operating a Macintosh computer. Its purpose is not to explain the meaning of statistical tests and terms. Before attempting to use JMP you must decide what you need to do with your data and what results you would like to see. This manual takes you from that point and teaches you how to get the information you seek from JMP. Please refer to your textbook or professor for a detailed understanding of the statistics and probability involved in your project.
GETTING STARTED
To use JMP and create a new file, double click on the JMP icon and select New from the File menu. To open a sample datafile or any other JMP datafile just double click on the icon. This automatically opens the JMP application as well as the datafile.
JMP looks like a spreadsheet. In order to use it, you must first fill the columns with your data. Then you must ask JMP to analyze the data according to specifications that will yield the results you desire. When you create a new file, one column will automatically appear. You can begin putting data in that column by highlighting the first block and typing in a piece of information. Hit the tab key to move to the next row. Additional columns can be created and deleted by selecting from the ColsTutorial: Easy Beads in Paint Shop ProI’m using Paint Shop Pro 8, but I know this feature is still in later versions. Ever tried Balls and Bubbles? They’re fun! Here are the easiest beads (or round candies if you’re so inclined) I know how to make. Start by opening a new raster image of 100 pixels. At 200 dpi this is going to make you a half -inch bead, scale-able as are all your picture tubes. Now go to Effects, Artistic Effects, Balls and Bubbles: When the options box opens, choose the “Gold Ball” preset, and select Single Ball and Maximum possible size.
If you haven’t ever explored the Balls and Bubbles feature you’ll want to come back later and play with all the various presets and make some of your own. Now, you can keep the color or colorize the bead as you wish. I’ll show you how to save as a single tube and also a multiple tube set, so while you’re playing with the colors make about six different ones.

According to Wikipedia, it hints at an improved form of the World Wide Web where technologies such as weblogs, social bookmarking, RSS feeds, photo and video sharing, based on an architecture of participation and democracy that encourages users to add value to the application as they use it. Web 2.0 enables social networking on the Web by allowing users to contribute content, share it, rate it, create a network of friends, and decide what they like to see and how they want it to look like.
In this panel, we propose to explore what Web 2.0 has to do with databases. Among the questions we will ask are: Are we going to be building new kinds of databases with Web 2.0? What does it mean when 1 million people are building a database as a collaborative effort? What is a new notion of schemas and queries that we need to develop for such scenarios? The main point of controversy is that while some people think that Web 2.0 requires a new data management infrastructure, others view it as a great opportunity to integrate many ”small” distributed databases which store users and content. We finish the panel by asking the question: Are there databases we can build now that could not be built earlier because we have mass collaboration?

Fortunately, most programmers do not hold such extreme opinions, and often would like to see a rational evaluation of different languages from which they can draw their own opinions. Many researchers have proposed methods for comparing and evaluating languages 2, 9, 10], but they tend to focus more on the languages than on the needs of language users. Although languages are intrinsically worthy of study, their real purpose is as tools in problem solving.
Users do need to know the strengths and deficiencies inherent in a language, and how well a language applies to an application domain. But, even within an application domain, requirements for two distinct projects may vary widely. One product may have to be highly reliable and portable, while another may have to be extremely efficient. Thus, knowing how well a language supports an application domain may not su ce we also need to know how well a language supports the needs of particular projects within a domain. We need to be able to evaluate languages for their applicability to a specific project. This paper proposes a language evaluation method with just that focus.
In the following sections, we review major categories of programming language evaluation criteria, and propose an evaluation scheme that could help software developers determine the best language for their particular task.
