  • Scalability of the Microsoft Cluster Service
  • An important argument for the introduction of software managed clusters is that of scale: By constructing the cluster out of commodity compute elements, one can, by simply adding new elements, improve the reliability of the overall system in terms of performance and in availability. The limits to how far such a cluster can be scaled seems to be dependent on the scalability of its management software, which in its core has a collection of distributed algorithms to guarantee the correct operation of the cluster. The complexity of these algorithms makes them a vulnerable component of the system in terms of their impact on the overall scalability of the system. This paper examines two of the distributed components of the Microsoft Cluster Service that are most likely to have an impact on its scalability: the membership and the global update managers. The first sections of the paper will provide some general background on these distributed services and scalability issues. After that the algorithms used to implement these service are described in detail and an analysis of their impact on scalability is given. The scalability analysis is based on an off-line analysis of the algorithms as well as the results of on-line experiments on a cluster with a, in MSCS terms, large number of nodes. • GnuCash Help Manual
  • What is GnuCash? GnuCash is a personal and small business finance application. Its designed to be easy to use, yet powerful and flexible. GnuCash allows you to track your income and expenses, reconcile bank accounts, monitor stock portfolios and manage your small business finances. It is based on professional accounting principles to ensure balanced books and accurate reports. Getting Started Running GnuCash for the first time The very first time you run GnuCash you will be presented with the Welcome to GnuCash! menu with three choices. The following table describes the contents of the menu. Table 1. Menu Item Description Create a new set of accounts Runs the New Account Hierarchy Setup Druid. The Cancel button is used to exit the dialog. It will then prompt you to uncheck the checkbox if you do not want to see the Welcome to GnuCash! menu again. The default is to have the Welcome to GnuCash! menu run again. The OK button is used to confirm your selection. You can either use a preset hierarchy of accounts, import Quicken files (QIF files) or view the GnuCash Tutorial and Concepts Guide. Each of these choices will be explained in more depth in the following sections. If you wish to have a basic set of accounts to add account transactions
  • Web Content Adaptation to Improve Server Overload Behavior
  • WEB-. Techniques. , vol. 3, no. 5, pp. 45{52, May 1998. 8] R. T. Fielding and G. Kaiser, The apache http server project,". When the request rate on a web server increases beyond server capacity, the server becomes over- loaded and unrespoive. The TCP listen queue of the servers socket overows exhibiting a drop-tail behavior. As a result, clients experience service outages. Since clients typically issue multiple requests over the duration of a session with the server, and since requests are dropped indiscriminately, all clients connecting to the server at overload are likely to experi- ence connection failures, even though there may be enough capacity on the server to deliver all respoes properly for a subset of clients. In this paper, we propose to resolve the overload problem by adapting Download
  • The AspectJ Programming Guide
  • Many software developers are attracted to the idea of aspect-oriented programming (AOP) but unsure about how to begin using the technology. They recognize the concept of crosscutting concerns, and know that they have had problems with the implementation of such concerns in the past. But there are many questions about how to adopt AOP into the development process. Common questions include: Can I use aspects in my existing code? What kinds of benefits can I expect to get from using aspects? How do I find aspects in my programs? How steep is the learning curve for AOP? What are the risks of using this new technology? This chapter addresses these questions in the context of AspectJ: a general-purpose aspect-oriented extension to Java. A series of abridged examples illustrate the kinds of aspects programmers may want to implement using AspectJ and the benefits associated with doing so. Readers who would like to understand the examples in more detail, or who want to learn how to program examples like these, can find more complete examples and supporting material linked from the AspectJ web site ( http://eclipse.org/aspectj ). A significant risk in adopting any new technology is going too far too fast. Concern about this risk causes many organizations to be conservative about adopting new technology. To address this issue, the examples in this chapter are grouped into three broad categories, with aspects that are easier to adopt into existing development projects coming earlier in this chapter. The next section, Introduction to AspectJ, we present the core of AspectJ's features, and

  • .NET Framework Security
  • The .NET Framework is an integral Windows component that supports building and running the next generation of applications and XML Web services. The .NET Framework is designed to fulfill the following objectives: • To provide a consistent object-oriented programming environment whether object code is stored and executed locally, executed locally but Internet-distributed, or executed remotely. • To provide a code-execution environment that minimizes software deployment and versioning conflicts. • To provide a code-execution environment that promotes safe execution of code, including code created by an unknown or semi-trusted third party. • To provide a code-execution environment that eliminates the performance problems of scripted or interpreted environments. • To make the developer experience consistent across widely varying types of applications, such as Windows-based applications and Web-based applications. • To build all communication on industry standards to ensure that code based on the .NET Framework can integrate with any other code. The Framework has appeared as an alternative to Sun’s Java platform (http://java.sun.com), but has yet to receive as wide acceptance as the more established Java. A comparison between Java and .NET is beyond the scope of this document. .NET accommodates the use of several different programming languages, as long as they conform to the Common Type System (CTS), a part of the Common Language Infrastructure (CLI) [14]. It is argued [15, Ch. 2] that this allows developers with different language backgrounds to still use their preferred languages and not get locked in to a specific language that the Framework supports. The validity of this argument can be questioned. For a
  • 2007 MacWorld San Fransisco Report
  • It’s time to report on the 2007 Macworld event held, as always, in January. The rumor mill was certainly cranking heartily before it and didn’t slow down all that much to date. So what were the rumors prior to Macworld? Leopard updates were thought to be a sure thing, espe- cially on the heels of Bill Gates giving his CES keynote the Saturday before, touting Windows Vista features and demonstrating some of the them. It was felt there was a very good chance that an “iPhone” would be announced, though bets were that it would not be called that. (Too bad Cisco!) There was reasonable expectation that updated versions of iLife and iWork would make their debuts. iLife ‘07 would have an new iWeb 2.0 and iWork ‘07 would come with a new spreadsheet application. It was also thought that there could be announcements related to new iPods, dual quad-core Mac Pros, and new, larger Cinema Displays. Download 2007 MacWorld San Fransisco Report
