Despite the ‘slippery’ nature of the concept (Girod 1990), there is an emerging consensus that the nature of informal learning is more specific than simply being any learning outside of formal education. At one level informal learning is “undertake[n] individually or collectively, on our own without externally imposed criteria or the presence of an institutionally authorised instructor” (Livingstone 2000, p.493). Thus, whereas formal learning is typically institutionally sponsored, classroom based and structured, informal learning “is not typically classroom based or highly structured, and control of learning rests primarily in the hands of the learner” (Marsick & Watkins 1990, p.12). Yet we should not overlook the fact that informal learning also includes a range of learning stimulated by general interests which is ‘caught not taught’ (Davies 1998).
There is growing evidence that many people are engaged in a wide range of technology-based informal learning at home and the community (Cranmer 2006, Impact2 2003, Facer et al. 2003). As Sefton-Green (2005, p.3) concluded from an extensive review of literature in the area: “computers and other aspects of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) allow children and young people a wide variety of activities and experiences that can support learning, yet many of these transactions do not take place in traditional educational settings. In fact many of these may not be considered ‘educational’Creating a 3D immersive environment in MayaThe following tutorial will take you step by step through the creation of a natural environment in Maya. You will also setup a character inside the environment and to add interactivity in Virtools. This tutorial introduces you to Maya’s 3D Paint Effects allowing you to paint in 3D. A few strokes can paint trees, grass, flowers. The paint strokes from your brush are converted into 3D objects inside a 3D space. Maya’s ability to convert 3D Paint Effects to polygonal objects is helpful to create content for interactive environments. This tutorial requires Maya 5.0 and up.
You can control the strokes’ shape, color, density, while painting on the horizontal grid plane of the perspective view or directly on other 3D objects. Let’s grab a brush and start to paint trees and grass in 3D, let’s create the ground for your forest.

Its modular design allows you to change from scanning 35 mm slides to scanning 35 mm strip film “on the fly.” An adapter for scanning IX240 film is available separately. The LS-30 uses a high-speed SCSI interface for connection to computers running Mac OS System Software 7.1 or later, Windows 95 or later, or Windows NT 4.0 or later.
The scanner driver software provided with your scanner, Nikon Scan 2.1, offers sophisticated pre-scan editing of images, including precise color correction, contrast, and brightness adjustment. Nikon Scan can be launched from any TWAIN-compliant application under Windows or from any application that supports Adobe Photoshop plug-ins (version 4.0 or higher) on the Macintosh. Nikon Scan can also be used as a “stand-alone” application, allowing you to save scanned images to disk without the help of another application.
The user’s manuals for the LS-30 and Nikon Scan are divided into three parts. This User’s Guide offers a brief introduction to setting up the scanner and scanning images using Nikon Scan. More detailed reference manuals for the scanner and for Nikon Scan are provided on CD-ROM. To read these manuals you will need to install the Adobe Acrobat Reader software included on the refer- ence CD. In addition, a one-page Fast Track Guideis provided for experienced users who want to get started with the minimum of instruction. Compatible models include the A4, Beetle, Passat, Jetta, Golf and GTI. The BCS provides user adjustability of maximum boost. At the minimum setting, the boost is held to the stock level of 6 PSI and the car will drive exactly like a stock car. As the boost setting is increased, the allowable boost is increased in precise increments. At the maximum setting, the boost is allowed to reach 14.5 PSI. This boost increases horsepower by 30 hp and the low-end torque is increased by 45 ft-lbs. The BCS includes a ten segment, three color LED boost gauge that reads in 1.5 PSI increments from 1 to 14.5 PSI. The display is electronically filtered to provide a smooth reading.
The BCS offers an alternative to aftermarket re-programming of the ECU. With the BCS, the stock ECU programming is maintained. This helps to preserve smooth and predictable drivability.
The BCS is easy to install. Its small size makes it easy to fit in the center console. The six wires leading from the BCS are all connected to the car’s wiring harness at one location.
Features:
• Maximum boost adjustable from the driver’s seat
• Maintains stock ECU programming
• Boost gauge reads manifold pressure from 1 to 14.5 PSI in 1.5 PSI steps
• Low cost
• Miniature size
• Easy to install
