  • We present Google, a prototype of a large-scale search engine which makes heavy use of the structure present in hypertext. Google is designed to crawl and index the Web efficiently and produce much more satisfying search results than existing systems. The prototype with a full text and hyperlink database of at least 24 million pages is available at http://google.stanford.edu/ To engineer a search engine is a challenging task. Search engines index tens to hundreds of millions of web pages involving a comparable number of distinct terms. They answer tens of millions of queries every day. Despite the importance of large-scale search engines on the web, very little academic research has been done on them. Furthermore, due to rapid advance in technology and web proliferation, creating a web search engine today is very different from three years ago. This paper provides an in-depth description of our large-scale web search engine — the first such detailed public description we know of to date. Apart from the problems of scaling traditional search techniques to data of this magnitude, there are new technical challenges involved with using the additional information present in hypertext to produ e better search results. This paper addresses this question of how to build a practical large-scale system which can exploit the additional information present in hypertext. Also we look at the problem of how to effectively deal with uncontrolled hypertext collections where anyone can publish anything they want.   • The rear panel calibration adjustment allows you to fine tune the BCS for your vehicle. If the setting is too high or too low, your car will not make full power. After the BCS is installed, the rear panel adjustment can be set during a short test drive. Start with the setting on maximum (100). See if the car pulls strongly to redline. Turn down the setting until the cars pulls strongly to redline in all gears. If the cars surges (cyclic variation in power), turn down the setting a little bit. Wiring Instructions The diagram below shows the location of the wires on the ECU connector plugs that are used to tie in the BCS. Be sure to trace the wires to the ECU pins to insure that connections are made to the correct wires. Do not go by wire color alone. You must confirm the correct wire by connector location. Connections will be made to the wiring harness a few inches from the side of the engine computer. All connections are made using the crimp connectors that are provided. The T-tap connectors are in two parts. The dark red piece is clamped onto the wire with a pair of pliers. After striping the corresponding wire from the BCS, crimp on the male spade connector. Make sure you crimp onto the bare wire and not the insulation. Shrink the insulation onto the wire with a heat gun.   • Investigating computer intrusions can be a complicated matter. Attackers are continually hiding their malicious code, erasing or modifying log files, and finding new techniques to minimize the trace evidence they leave behind. After reviewing nearly 200 compromised systems in the last 12 months, I have often become frustrated with the lack of evidence found on victim systems after the intrusions took place. In fact, the exploitation and post-exploitation techniques used by current attackers almost always thwart traditional physical media analysis practiced by the majority of computer forensic examiners. Therefore, we have to continually improve our techniques, and add investigative steps that used to be rare, but now must become commonplace to the forensic examinations we perform in support of computer intrusion cases. Several new investigative steps we have added to our repertoire include in-depth examination of System Restore points. This article is the result of a case study on an investigation conducted in the United States. This case demonstrates how computer forensic examiners can review System Restore points to establish an event timeline and unearth well hidden clues that assist in understanding how a computer system had been compromised. Without review of the System Restore points, our investigation would have fallen very short of answering the questions promoted by the case.   • Exception Handling: A Field Study in Java and .NET
  • Most modern programming languages rely on exceptions for dealing with abnormal situations. Although exception handling was a significant improvement over other mechanisms like checking return codes, it is far from perfect. In fact, it can be argued that this mechanism is seriously limited, if not, flawed. This paper aims to contribute to the discussion by providing quantitative measures on how programmers are currently using exception handling. We examined 32 different applications, both for Java and .NET. The major conclusion for this work is that exceptions are not being correctly used as an error recovery mechanism. Exception handlers are not specialized enough for allowing recovery and, typically, programmers just do one of the following actions: logging, user notification and application termination. To our knowledge, this is the most comprehensive study done on exception handling to date, providing a quantitative measure useful for guiding the development of new error handling mechanisms. In order to develop robust software, a programming language must provide the programmer with primitives that make it easy and natural to deal with abnormal situations and recover from them. Robust software must be able to perceive and deal with the temporary disconnection of network links, disks that are full, authentication procedures that fail and so on. Most modern programming languages like C#, Java or Python rely on exceptions for dealing with such abnormal events.   • Many older vehicles (made before the 1996 model year) from certain manufacturers have safety belts in the front seat that are not designed to anchor child safety seats tightly. Some have buckles anchored very far forward. Many have automatic (passive) front safety belts either attached to the door of the vehicle or moving on a track above the door. Some have separate lap belts that do not lock tightly around child safety seats. Special parts may be ordered from the vehicle manufacturer to solve some of these problems. Children should be buckled up in the back seat, if possible. However, it may be necessary to place a child safety seat in the front if all rear seating positions are in use by other children or the child safety seat cannot be firmly attached in the rear. Some manufacturers of cars with automatic belts have provided special child seat buckles or belts for anchoring a child safety seat tightly in the front seat, if necessary.
