Small-business people need an efficient, understandable programming language to write quick utilities to solve problems unique to their work. A surfboard maker may often need to calculate polyester catalyst ratios, or dad might want to write up a quick history quiz to help with Laura’s homework. A hobbyist may enjoy creating a coin collection management program. Getting started
There are several things you need to do in order to use e-mail.
- You need to create an Internet setup using the Newton Internet Enabler (NIE) [5] so that your Newton device can communicate with your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or intranet.
- If you’re using a modem, you need to set your modem preferences.
- You need to set up SimpleMail [8]. Once these steps are done, you should be able to use e-mail on your Newton device.
Note
Because SimpleMail uses the Newton Internet Enabler, it will only work with Newton 2.x devices. It will not work on the Original MessagePad (OMP), MP100, MP110 or early models of the MP120 which use Newton 1.x.x
Since then Paul Guyot has created a 2.1 (710031) update for the English MP2000 and MP2100 that fixes a Dates/Find bug.
The six-digit number tells you what type of Newton device the system update applies to, and when it was built. See the Newton FAQ: Newton OS [3] for a full description of the numbering system.
Newton Internet Enabler
Your Newton must be Internet Enabled before you can use SimpleMail. You need to install Apple’s Newton Internet Enabler (NIE) [5], of which there are two versions.

Click on the AutoCad icon. It will open a blank drawing file and a dialog box called ‘AutoCad Today’. Close the AutoCad Today’ and start working in the drawing file. In AutoCad, you do not have to specify the units of length. It works in relative units. Hence, you can draw with dimensions in any units (m, cm, mm, micron, inch etc.). Just make sure that all your dimensions have been consistently converted in that unit.
For drawing masks in AutoCad you only need to learn 2D sketching. You need not learn 3D modeling. On the left you will find a lot of drawing tools. All these tools can also be accessed from the command prompt. It is essential to use a combination of commands and tool-buttons to make your drawings fast. When you click on a button, the command associated with this button is shown in the command prompt. That’s how you can learn the commands. Command prompt is very important. Always keep an eye on the command prompt.
Most useful drawing tools
I have found the following tools to be the most useful. All these tools are located on the left hand side.
Construction line: These lines are used as reference line.
Polyline: Most of the linear features on your mask will be made with polyline. You can control the width of these lines and thus create features of different width. Width can be specified through the command prompt.
