  • Concepts in Programming Languages Review
  • This book is concerned with concepts in programming languages, issues in their implementation, and how language design affects program development. It is aimed at upper-level undergraduate students and beginning graduate students with some experience in procedural and OO programming. Functional programming experience is claimed to be helpful but non-essential. As a teaching text, it competes with a similarly-named book by Sebesta, a book by (Wilson and) Clark, and others. Like most books in this area, it is mostly organised by concept (rather than by language), with a (here, relatively short) history of programming languages at the beginning. The “foundational” chapters are then concerned with computability, Lisp, syntax, semantics and functional programming. Next, a number of chapters deal with the traditional concepts in procedural languages, followed by a third section on object-oriented programming. The final chapters, as usual in texts in this area, deal with concurrency and logic programming (the latter chapter is by Krzystof Apt). As one might have expected from the author, this book is an extremely rich source of important information, subtle issues, and diverse and challenging exercises. This makes it an excellent text for further reading. As an introductory text, however, it is less suitable. This is mostly due to structuring and content, and partially to bias. As an example of problems with structure and content, consider (parametric) polymorphism. Chapter 5 uses the ML “length” function as an example (without giving its type), and mentions polymorphism four pages later as a subject to be covered in Chapter 6. Then,
  • Resolving Tag Ambiguity
  • Tagging is an important way for users to succinctly describe the content they upload to the Internet. However, most tag-suggestion systems recommend words that are highly correlated with the existing tag set, and thus add little information to a user’s contribution. This paper describes a means to determine the ambiguity of a set of (user-contributed) tags and suggests new tags that disambiguate the original tags. We introduce a probabilistic framework that allows us to find two tags that appear in different contexts but are both likely to co-occur with the original tag set. If such tags can be found, the current description is considered “ambiguous” and the two tags are recommended to the user for further clarification. In contrast to previous work, we only query the user when information is most needed and good suggestions are available. We verify the efficacy of our approach using geographical, temporal and semantic metadata, and a user study. We built our system using statistics from a large (100M) database of images and their tags. Tags are an important part of today’s multimedia databases. They are often contributed by users when they submit an image or video and form a key part of the search experience. Content-based multimedia search remains out of reach, and a simple tag like “Tokyo” provides more information than we can possibly glean from content-based algorithms. Thus, making it as easy as possible for users to enter tags alongside multimedia content is important. This work addresses the problem of eliciting high-quality tags

  • AutoCAD 2008 Productivity Study Paper Guide
  • White paper to guide AutoCAD customers in making an upgrade decision for Autodesk. AutoCAD 2008 makes architects 26% more productive A little training brings even more rewards. Cambridge UK, How much will you benefit from upgrading to AutoCAD 2008? Cambashi, an independent consulting firm, compared architects using AutoCAD 2008 against those using AutoCAD 2005 for a typical design documentation exercise. The findings were clear: AutoCAD 2008 is significantly more productive. On average, architects using 2008 completed the exercise 26% faster than those using 2005. Training makes all the difference-AutoCAD 2008 users who invested time in a short period of training were substantialy faster. So how much more productive can you expect to be? • Using the Semantic Web for linking and reusing data across Web 2.0 communities
  • Large volumes of content (bookmarks, reviews, videos, etc.) are currently being created on the “Social Web”, i.e. on Web 2.0 community sites, and this content is being annotated and commented upon. The ability to view an individual’s entire contribution to the Social Web would be an interesting and valuable service, particularly important as social networks are often being formed through created content and things that people have in common (“object-centred sociality”). SIOC is a Semantic Web research project that aims to describe online communities on the Social Web. This paper describes how SIOC and the Semantic Web can enable linking and reuse scenarios of data from Web 2.0 community sites, and introduces a SIOC Types module to further specify the type of content items and act as a “glue” between user posts and the content items created and annotated by users. The Web is increasingly becoming a social place: there has been a shift from just existing on the Web to participating on the Web. Community applications such as collaborative wikis, blogging, photo and bookmark sharing, and online social networks have become very popular recently, both in personal/social and professional/organisational domains [1]. Most of these collaborative applications provide common features such as content creation and sharing (images, user profiles, bookmarks, articles, etc.), provisions for discussions related to the content (comments, talk pages) and user-to-user connections (circle of friends, private messaging, etc.) and networks of users are also forming through content items of common interest (in what has been termed “object-centred sociality”

  • Research and Implementation of E-commerce Platform Based on .NET Framework
  • Nowadays, transacting business through E-commerce platform has become an important business trading way in modern society. E-commerce has been applied to literally every aspect of our society. The requirements of users are variable, different methods are in need of realizing E-commerce, even the deployment platforms are different. The JSP, ASP, HTML and other traditional scripting language has become unable to meet the needs of designing a complex system, even if it has been realized, the coupling between codes, the configuration environment and system deployment dependency fall far short of various requirements of users. It is a highly skilled work which demands good conception of beauty and much professional knowledge of the program designers. However, it is difficult to fulfill the needs in reality. The .NET Framework is Microsoft's comprehensive and consistent programming model for building applications that have visually stunning user experiences, seamless and secure communication, and the ability to model a range of business processes. It includes a large library of coded solutions to prevent common programming problems and a virtual machine that manages the execution of programs written specifically for the framework. The .NET Framework is a key Microsoft offering and is intended to be used by most new applications created for the Windows platform. The coded solutions that form the framework's Base Class Library cover a large range of programming needs in a number of areas, including user interface, data access, database connectivity, cryptography, web application development, numeric algorithms, and network communications. The class library is used by
