  • You may already know that along with Office 2007, Microsoft introduced a new file format that is not compatible with older versions of Office. If you haven’t upgraded to Office 2007 or are using Mac OSX then you won’t be able to automatically open Word documents that carry the .docx extension or PowerPoint Presentations (.pptx). If you are using an older version of Office in Windows and attempt to open a .docx or .pptx file, you may be prompted with a message to install the Microsoft Compatibly Pack (which you should do) or you could get an error message. On a Mac, a .docx file will show up as a .zip file that you won’t be able to open in Word. This means that an instructor using Office 2003 could have trouble opening a Word 2007 document that a student submits in Blackboard. For file sharing between Office 2007 and older versions, one solution is for the Office 2007 user to save documents as compatible .doc or .ppt formats. Understandably, it might not always be convenient to request that an Office 2007 user resave all of the documents they’ve sent you.   • The current pedagogical trend about involving students in their learning is naturally extended to student-centered learning in e-Learning systems. Likewise, instructional designs are developed to enable and motivate students at center stage to learn effectively and willingly. However, from our ten years of experience in promoting an e-Learning system called TIES in higher education, we have realized that an “e-Teaching” environment for teachers to teach effectively and happily needs to be founded as a prerequisite to successful e-Learning. We further argue that “e-Teaching” can be developed to be a central idea that is actually more important than e-Learning. The reasons are as follows: (1) teaching is more fun and active than learning, (2) teaching requires more creative and imaginative brain work than learning, (3) teaching creates more value than learning, and (4) the Web is growing as a global brain harnessing intellectual knowledge. A seemingly innocuous shift of the center of attention from students to teachers may transform e-Teaching as a current Web 0 status to even Web 2.1, if we may borrow a trendy word from a recent Web 2.0 hype. Increasingly, e-Leaning today is defined by terms like Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the context of ubiquitous IT network society. However, the bottom line of e-Learning is defined as training delivered on a PC/Internet to improve students' learning performance and their self-motivation and self-directedness.   • Over the last 12 years, Microsoft Corporation has developed a successful operating system for mobile devices based on Windows CE, currently known as Windows Mobile. The Windows Mobile deliverable consists of (1) a particular set of Windows CE components, (2) a logo test kit requirements document, (3) a set of light weight middleware applications, and (4) commercialization components, such as drivers and value-added services provided by OEMs and Mobile Operators. Microsoft licenses the Windows Mobile OS to third parties, (generally OEMs and MOs), who commercialize and sell the operating system as part of a device and service offering. Microsoft entered the embedded device space with Windows CE in 1992, after many years of creating desktop operating systems. Microsoft’s desktop strategy centered on the idea of “platform,” and we brought this idea to the device space. The notion of a vibrant and compelling third party software ecosystem was perceived a necessity for success. That said the small, handheld device is not a PC, and the limitations of the battery powered device, with a small screen, and intermittent and variable network connectivity, make a successful software ecosystem a difficult proposition.
