  • Beginners Guide Maya
  • In this beginners guide we discuss how to build a simple humanoid character and how to animate it. It was not our intention to give a step-by-step guide on how to build a character and how to animate it, because there is extensive amount of literature available on this. This guide can be used next to the “Learning Maya 5 Foundation” book as a source for more information and explanation. We found that although the book is very clear on what actions to do and what the actions will result in, it lacked somewhat in explaining the meaning of concepts and the reasons for performing actions. In this guide, we first give an explanation of the Maya interface and the main interface elements that are important for character building and animation. We then follow the “Learning Maya 5 Foundation” subjects on building and animating a humanoid character. First building the basic character by creating a skeleton, adding geometries, flexors and selection handles. Then preparing the character for animation, by adding controls for movements with expressions, rotate planes and vector constraints. Then animating the character by creating character nodes, keyframes, linear animation, non-linear animation and non-destructive keys (secondary animation) and the Maya Embedded Language (MEL). In the last part we discuss shortly the use of cameras, lighting, texturizing, rendering. Download pdf Beginners Guide Maya
  • PaintFx - Plasma Membrane Animation Techniques
  • This tutorial will take you through the process of creating an animated plasma membrane using Maya's unique Paint Effects module. Much of the tutorial will be focused on how to create a custom brush starting with the Paint Effects base brushes that ship with Maya. Paint Effects are ideal for situations in which a very large number of objects need to be seen from a distance (in this particular situation, the number of lipids on the surface of the membrane). Lets start by designing the brush. Creating a Base Stroke Designing a custom Paint Effects brush requires the adjustment of a myriad sliders and attributes. The process is not terribly straight-forward. The best way to learn is get an idea of how the paint effects controls work and then experiment. As you gain experience you'll find yourself becoming more comfortable with creating brushes. However, no matter how much experience you have, working with Paint Effects will almost always come down to trial and error with all of the various settings. This section of the tutorial is a walk-through of a typical custom brush design exercise. I will explain the controls that I use and what I hope to achieve when adjusting their settings. There are many ways to create a particular effect using a brush, the methods I describe are just a few. 1. Create a new Maya scene, this scene will be the devoted to designing the brush, once you have something satisfactory, you can export the brush from here to any
  • Network Coding for Large Scale Content Distribution
  • Typical content distribution solutions are based on placing dedicated equipment inside or at the edge of the Internet. The best example of such solutions is Akamai [1], which runs several tens of thousands of servers all over the world. In recent years, a new paradigm for Content Distribution has emerged based on a fully distributed architecture where commodity PCs are used to form a cooperative network and share their resources (storage, CPU, bandwidth). Cooperative content distribution solutions are inherently self scalable, in that the bandwidth capacity of the system increases as more nodes arrive: each new node requests service from, and, at the same time, provides service to other nodes. Because each new node contributes resources, the capacity of the system grows as the demand increases, resulting in limitless system scalability. With cooperation, the source of the file, i.e. the server, does not need to increase its resources to accommodate the larger user population; this, also, provides resilience This work was done while the first author was with Microsoft research. to “flash crowds”— a huge and sudden surge of traffic that usually leads to the collapse of the affected server. Therefore, end-system cooperative solutions can be used to efficiently and quickly deliver software updates, critical patches, videos, and other large files to a very large number of users while keeping the cost at the original server low. The best example of an end-system cooperative architecture is the BitTorrent system, which became extremely popular as a way of delivering the Linux distributions and other

  • Microsoft Exchange Connector
  • The Microsoft Exchange connector allows users to index Microsoft Exchange content. By using a unique special administrative account, all the mailboxes and public folders can be indexed. Features The Microsoft Exchange connector can be used to index mailboxes. It allows Coveo Enterprise Search (CES) to crawl and index the content of a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 or 2007 installation. Furthermore, it offers a more efficient search than Microsoft Exchange’s built-in search components. Feature List The following details the features available in the Microsoft Exchange connector: - Mailbox indexing - Public Folder indexing - Security: CES indexes security by combining Microsoft Exchange permissions set in Microsoft Exchange by users and Active Directory by administrators. - Live indexing: Allows the connector to periodically query Microsoft Exchange for the latest edits, keeping the index content up to date. - The Microsoft Exchange connector collects a maximum of metadata for emails, contacts, tasks and calendars. - The Microsoft Exchange connector supports form-based authentication, which should be used when the OWA server is configured to use it. Two types of form-based authentications are supported: - Standard Exchange Form Based Authentication - ISA Server Form Based Authentication Download pdf Microsoft Exchange Connector
