  • EXPERT RIGGING IN MAYA
  • Tentacled appendages have been around as long as weird creatures in movies and comic books have existed. But creating the proper movement, and getting the right look, is deceptively difficult. Mechanical tentacles such as the sentinels from the Matrix series, or like Doc Ock’s in Spider-Man 2, are particularly challenging. This tutorial walks you through setting up a character with tentacles, and should give you a good idea of the general approach to take. Part of working in CG is the ability to push the limits of reality – mechanised parts can be exaggerated to stretch and reach further than possible, or be squashed like a slinky – if set up properly, they can do anything you like. Michael Ingrassia, from Escape Studios in London, has provided us with a cartoony character with tentacles to rig and animate. I’m assuming you’re already familiar enough with Maya that you can rig a complete character without a problem, so we’ll be focusing on the tentacles and claws – how they attach to the body, and how all the parts work together to help bring the character to life. The character rig is very basic, so if you’re trying to do anything fancy, you’ll probably need to add more to it. We’ll walk through a spline IK-type setup in Maya. Maya has a very intuitive and powerful IK solver and its spline abilities function well when set up properly. There are no FK controls for the tentacles, although I would usually provide that to the
  • A LATEX survival guide for Unix systems
  • This document is designed to provide new users of LAEX with a reference for the local features not documented in the manual (The LATEX Book, Lesley Lamport, Addison Wesley 1987); it takes the place of the Local Guide referred to in the book. For a general introduction to LATEX, you are referred to the companion manual Essential LATEX ++, mostly by Jon Warbrick. For a general introduction to the concepts of the TEX software distribution, see Joachim Schrod’s Components of TEX. Readers of this document will normally be staff or students who have either taught themselves LATEX, or are being taught it as part of a course. Completely new users should read Essential LATEX ++ £rst, to familiarize themselves with basic concepts. Most of this manual is for reference purposes, so do not read it as a tutorial text! LATEX runs on a variety of computers at many different sites. This document tells you how to use LATEX on Unix computers. It is not about LATEX itself, which is described by the manual—LATEX: A Document Preparation System, published by Addison-Wesley, available at the book shop. If you have a question that you can’t answer by reading the manual and this document, ask the local support team. Download pdf A LATEX survival guide for Unix systems

  • Processor Utilization with Microsoft ® Windows ® Media Center Edition on Systems Enabled
  • This document is intended for OEMs and system builders building systems utilizing the Microsoft® Windows® XP Media Center Edition (MCE) operating system. The P-state transitions (Cool?n’Quiet and AMD PowerNow! technologies) allow a computer to dynamically switch between different processor performance states depending on the processor utilization. In mobile applications these transitions can help extend battery life while delivering maximum processor performance on demand. In desktop applications they can reduce heat dissipation of the processor, resulting in less use of the fan and less noise. The document Microsoft Windows XP MCE 2005 Hardware Requirements (available from Microsoft) helps specify maximum processor utilization for various user scenarios. OEMs and system builders are required to measure processor utilization for Windows XP MCE system compliance. OEMs and system builders must meet these requirements in order to receive the Windows XP MCE logo and to market their products as Windows XP MCE computers. • Implementing a Texture Caching System
  • Texture caching systems are designed to overcome the texture budget limitations of 3D games. Only the textures required to display the current scene are held in RAM. When new textures need to appear in the scene, they are loaded from a larger and slower repository, or they are dynamically generated. For example, textures can be pulled from disk into system RAM or downloaded from system RAM into the video RAM of a 3D accelerator. Textures can be dynamically generated by combining illumination maps with unlit source textures. QUAKE was one of the first games to implement a texture caching system that interacts closely with the 3D pipeline to cache graphics in an efficient manner (see References). DOOM cached textures as well, but its system was more of a solid- state approach, as was the data caching scheme in the 2D side-scroller ABUSE. The source code to both ABUSE and DOOM is now available; see the References at the end of this article. This article is broken into two parts. First, we’ll discuss the nature of texture maps and the issues involved in implementing a texture cache. Then, we’ll look at some concrete implementations of caching systems used in games that are currently under development. Textures and MIP-mapping Texture storage is all about MIP-maps. MIP-maps are prefiltered versions of a texture map stored at varying resolutions. To simplify this discussion, we will focus on MIP-maps that are square and are a power-of-two in width (1×1, 2×2, 4×4, ). We will speak of a MIP-map
