  • How to Identify Successful Actors of the Flickr Community and How to Determine Their Attributes
  • Under the term “Web 2.0” the Internet is currently going through a new growth phase where end users create content and communities are built for user interaction. One of these Web 2.0 services is Flickr, a photo-sharing platform that allows users to upload photos, tag, comment and add them to favourite lists and build a personal social network. Using the relationships between users, pictures, tags and groups, analysis of Flickr’s social structure gives a hint about the way people interact on a digital platform. Our project is part of a larger research project that aims to predict the success of social structures inside communities. Therefore we introduce a new approach to measure the performance of social entities inside the community and work out managerial implications. Although Flickr has become one of the most active Web 2.0 platforms, little research has been done so far. Mislove et al. [Mi07] state that online social networks including Flickr are so different from real world ones that the same measurements cannot be used. Kumaret al. [KNT06] from Yahoo Research have investigated the evolution of Flickr and Yahoo!360 by using an empirical model to prove their classification of three user groups. The process of pictures becoming popular through social network relationships is explored by Lerman & Jones [LJ06]. Advertising on social networking websites has also been a point of interest in Clemons, Barnett & Appadurai [CBA07] who suggest a change of marketing and advertisement efforts caused by new requirements. This paper is divided into five sections. After a
  • How to Use StreamSpin for Creating Your Own Services
  • The center for Data-intensive Systems (Daisy) at Aalborg University is currently working on a large project in which they combine the two worlds of Web 2.0 and Location-based services. The project known as the StreamSpin-project currently employs numerous developers. Furthermore it is planned that students will have the opportunity to develop their own services for the system during the coming semesters in order to mature the system and its service deliveries. It is the overall purpose of the StreamSpin project to be for Location-based services what YouTube is for video . Thereby, the vision is that virtually anybody should be able to create their own services and publish them to the masses or limit the publication to close friends. The motivation behind the project is the vision that the web now is becoming more and more mobile. Hence the need for Location-based services will grow massively in the near future. People using mobile phones with GPS or other positioning systems will have the possibility of knowing their position at a given time. This opens up for numerous advantageous scenarios in which a user of a mobile phone could retrieve information based on position, time and a customizable pro le. Systems that displays this behavior already exist, however the StreamSpin-project proposes that services are pushed to the mobile device rather than requested by the mobile device itself. The aim of this short paper is to cover the most important issues involving the creation of services for the StreamSpin-project. This includes understanding the StreamSpin server structure and
  • An Introduction to the Java Programming Language
  • In 1991, a group of Sun Microsystems engineers led by James Gosling decided to develop a language for consumer devices (cable boxes, etc.). They wanted the language to be small and use efficient code since these devices do not have powerful CPUs. They also wanted the language to be hardware independent since different manufacturers would use different CPUs. The project was code-named Green. These conditions led them to decide to compile the code to an intermediate machine-like code for an imaginary CPU called a virtual machine. (Actually, there is a real CPU that implements this virtual CPU now.) This intermediate code (called bytecode) is completely hardware independent. Programs are run by an interpreter that converts the bytecode to the appropriate native machine code. Thus, once the interpreter has been ported to a computer, it can run any bytecoded program. Sun uses UNIX for their computers, so the developers based their new language on C++. They picked C++ and not C because they wanted the language to be object-oriented. The original name of the language was Oak. However, they soon discovered that there was already a programming language called Oak, so they changed the name to Java. The Green project had a lot of trouble getting others interested in Java for smart devices. It was not until they decided to shift gears and market Java as a language for web applications that interest in Java took off. Many of the advantages that Java has for smart devices are even bigger advantages on the web. Currently,
  • Teach Yourself JAVA in 21 Days
  • Java is an object-oriented programming language developed by Sun Microsystems, a company best known for its high-end Unix workstations. Modeled after C++, the Java language was designed to be small, simple, and portable across platforms and operating systems, both at the source and at the binary level (more about this later). Java is often mentioned in the same breath as HotJava, a World Wide Web browser from Sun like Netscape or Mosaic (see Figure 1.1). What makes HotJava different from most other browsers is that, in addition to all its basic Web features, it can also download and play applets on the reader’s system. Applets appear in a Web page much in the same way as images do, but unlike images, applets are dynamic and interactive. Applets can be used to create animations, figures, or areas that can respond to input from the reader, games, or other interactive effects on the same Web pages among the text and graphics. Although HotJava was the first World Wide Web browser to be able to play Java applets, Java support is rapidly becoming available in other browsers. Netscape 2.0 provides support for Java applets, and other browser developers have also announced support for Java in forthcoming products. • Advanced Tools for Operators at Amazon.com
  • Despite significant efforts in the field of Autonomic Computing, system operators will still play a critical role in administering Internet services for many years to come. However, very little is know about how system operators work, what tools they use and how we can make them more efficient. In this paper we study the practices of operators in a large-scale Internet service Amazon.com and propose a new set of tools for operators. The first tool lets the operators explore the health of system components and dependencies between them; the other monitors the actions of operators and automatically suggests solutions to recurring problems. Large-scale Internet services invest significant amount of time and money to achieve high availability of their service, typically in the form of labor-intensive monitoring and response teams. Despite the high human resource expenditures, software and hardware failures still occur, and the human-intensive approach to monitoring and troubleshooting scales poorly as the service’s complexity and workload grow [1]. We hypothesize that the right kind of visualization and automation can reduce the human effort required for monitoring and repairing failures, allow operators to more quickly recognize a problem as recurrent, and facilitate better knowledge transfer in quickly-growing or high-turnover teams. One of the authors spent three months working alongside the Amazon.com team responsible for real-time monitoring of hardware and software and for providing monitoring tools for the rest of the company. We collected quantitative data via interviews and surveys and analyzed the data in the trouble ticket database that contains information about

  • MB86290 Series Model Converter V02 for LightWave3D User Manual
  • MB86290 Series Model Converter V02 for LightWave3D (model converter) reads the scene file, the object file, and the image data, which are created by the modeling tool, NewTek LightWave3D(Ver.5.x, Ver.6.x), and transfers the data for MB86290 series graphics controller. This data is called the model data. The model data is input in the scene drawing API (3DGL scene drawing API) of MB86290 Series 3D Graphics Library, and could be played back by MB86290 series graphics controller. The functions of the model converter are described in the following. • It transfers not only the object but also the information on the scene of a light, a camera, the motion information of movement/ rotation/ scaling. • It reads multi scene files, and can put together into one file and output it. • It can transfer the object file itself or the image data itself. • If there are same object in the scene file, those object data are managed as one data. • If there are same image data in the scene file, those image data are managed as one data. • Except the model data, it creates the model data index file to refer the model data information. • Performance Brief: Autodesk AutoCAD PDF Sheet
  • Riverbed Steelhead® Appliances Accelerate Autodesk AutoCAD® Despite the efforts of AutoCAD to dramatically reduce the average file size of design documents, file collaboration over a Wide Area Network (WAN) can take a dramatic toll on productivity. Files are often many hundreds of megabytes, resulting in inefficiency even in basic operations such as file opens and file saves. Architecture, engineering, and manufacturing firms estimate that design engineers can spend one-quarter to one full hour a day on remote file operations, dramatically reducing the available working time per person.
