Microsoft Uses LiteSpeed™ for SQL Server from Quest Software to Eliminate the Need for Additional StorageMicrosoft uses SAP as its primary Enterprise Resource Planning software. The Microsoft Enterprise Application Services Group depends on a variety of SAP systems for online transaction processing, batch processing and analytical reporting.
The Challenge
Two of these mission-critical systems include SAP Advanced Planning and Optimization (APO) and SAP Business Warehouse (BW). Both systems have four separate environments: technical sandbox, development, test and production. They require a total of eight separate databases and these databases were frequently running out of backup space due to extensive growth.
Steve Bury, Senior Technologist in the Enterprise Application Services (EAS) Group, explained, “Without a compression solution we were on the verge of having to acquire additional database backup storage to accommodate database growth. Just adding a few drives was not an option. Most systems’drivebays were full so we would have been required to add both new drivebays as well as additional controllers. A far more expensive alternative would have been to replace all existing drives with larger ones.”
The Quest Solution
Today the Microsoft EAS Group is using LiteSpeed™ for SQL Server to help compress and speed up the back- up process on all SAP systems: R/3, GTS, APO and BW. All R/3 environments are running on SQL Server 2005 and the other systems will be upgraded soon. Part 1- In Maya, exporting a cube with textures
Before exporting to Virtools, make sure that all faces inside the cube have their normals facing towards the inside of the cube. Go to Modeling, Display > Polygon Components > Normals
Normals are represented with colored lines sticking out of the faces of the cube.
The red arrow shows the way one normal should look like.
The red arrow indicates a normal that needs to be reversed.
Go to Modeling, Edit Polygons > Normals > Reverse
Creating a database Resource folder:
Open Virtools and create a Resource database, go to Resource > create New Data Resource Folder, name of your choice and save in the location of your choice. Virtools automatically creates a Resource.rsc file and a Resource folder which contains several subfolders. The file called Resource.rsc is used to open the database Resource folder in Virtools. This folder is independent from the composition that you will later create in Virtools. It can be used to exchange assets between projects.

Time required: 50 minutes
Tools required: 3 flat bladed screwdrivers, large, small and another in between. Best option would be a hot air gun, or a powerful hairdryer would work but will probably take longer.
Now heat the bonding with your hot air gun. I started from the right, Heat from about where the clip was and work your way right and down the side, don’t keep the gun in the same place for too long as you will melt the plastic. Once you feel the bonding is soft enough take your small screwdriver and scratch out all the softened bonding, don’t worry if it sticks to the glass it will come off easy later with a little rub. It dries and goes hard quite quickly so repeat the above till you have removed most of the bond.
Now from where the clip was work your way left across the top heating and scratching all the bond out just like your did previously, but do take your time, don’t rush anything.
Once you have removed most of the bond from the top and both sides, place your middle size screwdriver in the gap (again where about that clip was), and try to lever the glass away, but be gentle. The good news is that they will get significantly faster, but the bad news is that you won’t see all of the possible performance gains unless you write your application to take advantage of them. Over the last few years the increase in clock speeds has slowed down, and chip manufacturers are focussing more and more on concurrent execution of code. Hyperthreading was the first step, which allows a single processor core to execute two threads in parallel, but the future is multi-core chips which will allow many threads to execute truly independently. Intel is already talking about chips with over a hundred cores, so if your code is single-threaded you may only be using one hundredth of the available processing power!
