  • Web (2.0) Mining: Analyzing Social Media
  • The past few years have seen the advent of Web-based social media systems such as blogs, wikis, media-sharing sites and message forums. Such Web2.0 systems have a significant amount of user generated content, and have become an important new way to publish information, engage in discussions and form communities on the Internet. Their reach and impact is significant with tens of millions of people providing content on a regular basis around the world. Governments, corporations, traditional media companies and NGOs are working to understand how to adapt to them and use them effectively. Citizens, both young and old, are also discovering how social media technology can improve their lives and give them more voice in the world. We must better under- stand the information ecology of these new publication methods in order to make them and the information they provide more useful, trustworthy and reliable. Doing this requires mining such systems to find communities based on a combination of topic, bias, and underlying beliefs; authors and blogs are most influential within a given community; from where do particular beliefs or ideas originate and how do they spread; what are the most trustworthy sources of information about a particular topic; and what opinions and beliefs characterize a community and how do these opinions change. The Blogosphere is part of the Web and therefore shares most of it’s general characteristics. It differs, however, in some ways that impact how we can model it and use the model to help extract information from it.
  • Virtools Tutorial: How to Setup 2D and 3D Sound in Your Scene
  • This tutorial shows how to playback and how to script sounds inside a virtual space. We will use the Wav and Mp3 sounds files included in the following sound folder. Please note that wav files will be used for looping a short and repetitive sound for example the rain. The mp3 compression allows to play longer sound files for example a song or background music. A basic sound file can be saved in your Resource folder and imported into Virtools by drag and drop like the other assets. The sound file is placed in Level Manager > sound > Rain.wav. Go to Level Manager > sounds > Rain, Right.click on Rain.wav. In the Sound Setup , you can playback the sound, Step 1, or you can tweak Pitch, Gain, Pan, the sound parameters. These parameters are interactive BB in Virtools. Part 1 - Simple 2D Sound Playback In some cases, several flat background sounds or 2D sounds are all what you need. Sound file formats inside the Level Manager > sound folder can be played with the Wave Player BB. Sound from the Wave Player can be looped and turned on and off. • RICOH Printing Systems DDP Server User's Guide
  • The DDP Server is essentially controlled from the network. Nonetheless, two control lights are provided on an operator panel at the front. They are useful to control the basic operation of the DDP Server. The operator panel also contains the standby button for switching the DDP Server on or off. For saving energy while the DDP Server is not used, DDP Server provides an additional power switch at the rear. Furthermore, a small button is provided at the rear for special functions. This is only needed for setup and maintenance purposes. The elements on the front side have the following functions: • Standby button: This button allows you to power on or shut down the DDP Server. To power on or shut down the DDP Server, press this button shortly. A regular shut down includes closing the job and queue database. When the DDP Server is running, you may force power down by holding the standby button for more than 4 seconds. However, you should force power-down only if the DDP Server does not react otherwise, as in this way the database is not closed and loss of the stored data may result. For the same reason, do not switch off the DDP Server by means of the power switch at the rear before performing a regular shutdown using the standby button. • READY control light (green) with the following meanings: Constant – DDP Server is idle Blinking – DDP Server is busy • ERROR control light (yellow) with the following meanings: Constant – data transfer to printer The following

  • A Globus Primer
  • Everything You Wanted to Know about Globus, but Were Afraid To Ask Describing Globus Toolkit Version 4 An Early and Incomplete Draft Please send comments, criticisms, and suggestions to: foster@mcs.anl.gov Preface The Globus Toolkit (GT) has been developed since the late 1990s to support the development of service-oriented distributed computing applications and infrastructures. Core GT components address basic issues relating to security, resource access and management, data movement and management, resource discovery, and so forth. A broader “Globus universe” comprises numerous tools and components that build on core GT4 functionality to provide many useful application- level functions. These tools have been used to develop many Grid systems and applications. Version 4 of the Globus Toolkit, GT4, released in April 2005, represents a significant advance relative to the GT3 implementation of Web services functionality in terms of the range of components provided, functionality, standards conformance, usability, and quality of documentation. This document is intended to provide a first introduction to key features of both GT4 and associated tools, and the ways in which these components can be used to develop Grid infrastructures and applications. Its focus is on the user’s view of the technology and its application, and the practical techniques that should be employed to develop GT4-based applications. We discuss in turn the applications that motivate the development of GT4 and related tools; the four tasks involved in building Grids: design, deployment, application, operations; GT4 structure, including its Web services (WS) and pre-WS components; the Globus universe and its various
