  • Integrating Existing Software Toolkits into VO System
  • Virtual Observatory (VO) is a collection of interoperating data archives and software tools. Taking advantages of the latest information technologies, it aims to provide a data-intensively online research environment for astronomers all around the world. A large number of high-qualified astronomical software packages and libraries are powerful and easy of use, and have been widely used by astronomers for many years. Integrating those toolkits into the VO system is a necessary and important task for the VO developers. VO architecture greatly depends on Grid and Web services, consequently the general VO integration route is "Java Ready – Grid Ready – VO Ready". In the paper, we discuss the importance of VO integration for existing toolkits and discuss the possible solutions. We introduce two efforts in the field from China-VO project, "gImageMagick" and " Galactic abundance gradients statistical research under grid environment". We also discuss what additional work should be done to convert Grid service to VO service. Virtual Observatory (VO) is the result of combination of Astronomy and the latest information technologies. VO is driven by astronomical research and education, but is enabled by the latest technical progresses, especially those in computer science and network. One of the final goals of different VO projects from different countries and regions is to setup an International Virtual Observatory (IVO). While, the basic aim of the IVO is to provide uniform resource access to its users. The resources provided by the IVO are all kinds of resources related to astronomical research, education and outreach, including but

  • Using Cluster Analysis for Deriving Menu Structures for Automotive Mobile Multimedia Applications Paper
  • This paper describes the cluster analysis technique and how it can be used to support menu interface design for in-vehicle multimedia applications. Cluster analysis and similar types of classifying techniques have proven effective for developing simple menu interfaces. This paper extends the use of the cluster analysis technique to a more complex system that consists of 201 generic functions. These functions are representative of those being incorporated into near-term multimedia products. Study results show promise for using cluster analysis as a tool for incorporating the user’s organizational structure into the design of a complex menu architecture. Cluster analysis may also benefit the automotive menu designer by providing a means for partitioning menu tasks into chunkable units that can be easily accessed by the driver in single glances. • Analyzing Video Services in Web 2.0: A Global Perspective
  • Serving multimedia content over the Internet with negligible delay remains a challenge. With the advent of Web 2.0, numerous video sharing sites using different storage and content delivery models have become popular. Yet, little is known about these models from a global perspective. Such an understanding is important for designing systems which can efficiently serve video content to users all over the world. In this paper, we analyze and compare the underlying distribution frameworks of three video sharing services – YouTube, Dailymotion and Metacafe – based on traces collected from measurements over a period of 23 days. We investigate the variation in service delay with the user’s geographical location and with video characteristics such as age and popularity. We leverage multiple vantage points distributed around the globe to validate our observations. Our results represent some of the first measurements directed towards analyzing these recently popular services. The Internet is emerging as a prime broadcast medium offering Television, Radio, Cinema, and the exchange of videos for personal as well as commercial use. With the increasing demand, numerous websites offering a variety of options for sharing user-generated multimedia files have become available. YouTube, Dailymotion, and Metacafe are among the most popular video sharing services on the Internet today; they were the top three video streaming sites in the SeoMOZ Web 2.0 survey 2007 [2]. The new services leverage a video delivery technique known as pseudo-streaming [3]. This differs from traditional web streaming in that the video content can be played back as it is
