  • Reflective programming is becoming popular due to the increasing set of dynamic services provided by execution environments like JVM and CLR. With custom attributes Microsoft introduced an extensible model of reflection for CLR: they can be used as additional decorations on element declarations. The same notion has been introduced in Java 1.5. The annotation model, both in Java and in C#, limits annotations to classes and class members. In this paper we describe C# a, an extension of the C# programming language, that allows programmers to annotate statements and code blocks and retrieve these annotations at run-time. We show how this extension can be reduced to the existing model. A set of operations on annotated code blocks to retrieve annotations and manipulate bytecode is introduced. We also discuss how to use C# to annotate programs giving hints on how to parallelize a sequential method and how it can be implemented by means of the abstractions provided by the run-time of the language. Finally, we show how our model for custom attributes has been realized. Reflection and dynamic loading are becoming essential elements of modern programs. Their usefulness is testified, for example, by the JDBC architecture that shows how to implement a driver-based architecture exploiting the Java dynamic loading. Although reflection can be used to inspect the structure of types, to access fields and even to invoke methods dynamically, the concept of tagging has been anticipated as an interesting application.   • A laptop computer contains an integrated keyboard whereas a desktop computer uses an external keyboard. When using a desktop computer with a scanner that is designed to emulate keyboard input, the scanner is wedged into the cable that connects the external keyboard to the computer (hence, the term wedge scanner). Since a laptop keyboard is internal, there is no cable accessible to use a standard wedge connection for a scanner. However, most laptops make provision for an external keyboard via a separate keyboard connector (or port). Since the scanner connections to the laptop are different from the connections to a desktop computer, the scanner must be programmed specifically to operate as an external keyboard device.   • Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks make a system unavailable to well-behaved users by consuming a disproportionate amount of resources on the target system. DoS typically exploit weakness in the software, for instance consuming the bandwidth of the victim’s network or overloading the computational resources of its system. A lot of factors are involved when trying to build DoS resistant software. To make things worse, most of them are typically unknown during the development of the application. Reasonable hypotheses can facilitate the prevention of such attacks, but new ones can always arise and be exploited to damage systems. Researchers have studied the nature of these attacks [11, 7] and possible defense methodologies [12, 10], but building DoS resistant software still remains a challenging task. Just like in real-life, if daylight is coming through a window and you look toward it, your eyes compensate for it and adjust. If there are lights on within the room, they can become add less to the overall room brightness if the light coming through the window is too bright. This complex, sometimes subtle, change is taken into account by adjusting the Exposure like an automatic camera. These adjustments take into account over- and under-exposure due to contrasting light intensities. These two images have the same lighting intensities in the model, but the sunlight coming into the room can be seen hitting the floor crisply only in the first rendering.   • This tutorial will guide you through one way of setting up an animated sliding door in a vrml world using 3ds max. You will be provided with a prepared AutoCAD (3rooms.dwg) model of three rooms, comprising walls, ceiling, floor and a door, as shown above. You will import the AutoCAD model to 3ds max. You will apply lights, materials, cameras, and a navigation helper as previously done in the Tutorial #1 – VRML room of primitives! tutorial. You will animate the door to make it slide, and then create a ‘touch sensor’ helper to control the door opening. Finally you export as a virtual reality model in the form of a VRML file. You will view and interact with the VRML file (world, *.wrl) using a web browser. When completed you will be able to freely navigate around and view the internal spaces and click on the door to open it. You need access to a PC with AutoCAD (could be Architectural Desk Top) by AutoDesk, and 3ds max by Discreet. You will also need access to a web browser with a VRML client installed.
