Through time, internet based communication has developed its own set of non-verbal communication (emoticons, select usage of certain punctuation, chat speak, etc.) Like all other communication technologies, it has also been adapted into everyday life and everyday communication (by those that have access of course).
It is the interplay between internet and real life communication and its subsequent effect on interpersonal relationships that is the focus of this research proposal. Popular social networking websites such as Facebook have bundled many of the internet communication standards such as e-mail, forums, and instant messaging into one resource. Then these communication standards are linked together through a Web 2.0 standard called “social networking.” Social networking allows users to link and communicate with each other through a myriad of ways… and it is always at the user’s discretion.
Research has already been done on who uses Facebook, why they do, and how much time they spend on it (Ellison, Steinfield, & Lampe, 2007). There has also been introductory research done on the benefits of social networking through Facebook (Stern & Taylor, 2007) and the electronic presenting and “looking glass” self through Facebook (Walther 2008). The academic world knows what Facebook is and why it’s used. Microsoft has implemented its own algorithms and protocols to support PPTP. This implementation of PPTP, called Microsoft PPTP, is used extensively in commercial VPN products precisely because it is already a part of the Microsoft Windows 95, 98, and NT operating systems.
The authentication protocol in Microsoft PPTP is the Microsoft Challenge / Reply Handshake Protocol (MS-CHAP) [ZC98]; the encryption protocol is Microsoft Point to Point Encryption (MPPE) [PZ98]. After Microsoft’s PPTP was cryptanalyzed [SM98] and significant weaknesses were publicized, Microsoft upgraded their protocols [Zor98a, Zor98b, Zor99]. The new version is called MS-CHAP version 2 (MS-CHAPv2); the older version has been renamed as MS-CHAP version 1 (MS-CHAPv1). MS-CHAPv2 is available as an upgrade for Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT 4.0 (DUN 1.3) [Mic98a, Mic98b]. Even though this upgrade is available, we believe that most implementation of PPTP use MS-CHAPv1.
This paper examines MS-CHAPv2 and discusses how well it addresses the security weaknesses outlined in [SM98].
The most significant changes from MS-CHAPv1 to MS-CHAPv2 are:
• The weaker LAN Manager hash is no longer sent along with the stronger Windows NT hash. This is to prevent automatic password crackers like L0phtcrack [L99] from first breaking the weaker LAN Manager hash and then using that information to break the stronger NT hash [L97].

These are often called “social software” or web2.0 tools. The research project links the use of freely available mobile friendly web2.0 tools accessed via a smartphone with the learning objectives of a variety of different tertiary education courses. The smartphone’s wireless connectivity and data gathering abilities (e.g. photoblogging, video recording, voice recording, and text input) allow for bridging the on and off campus learning contexts – facilitating “real world learning”.
The research is focusing on social constructivist approaches to education (Bijker et al., 1987; Lave & Wenger, 1991; Vygotsky, 1978; Wenger et al., 2002) and a conversational model (Laurillard, 2001, 2007) of teaching and learning. The disruptive nature of web2.0 and mobile technologies (Sharples, 2000, 2001, 2005; Stead, 2006) facilitates a move from instructivist pedagogies to social constructivist pedagogies.
