Riding the Waves of Web 2.0“Web 2.0” has become a catch-all buzzword that people use to describe a wide range of online activities and applications, some of which the Pew Internet & American Life Project has been tracking for years. As researchers, we instinctively reach for our spreadsheets to see if there is evidence to inform the hype about any online trend. What follows is a short history of the phrase, along with some data to help frame the discussion.
Let’s get a few things clear right off the bat: 1) Web 2.0 does not have anything to do with Internet2: 2) Web 2.0 is not a new and improved internet network operating on a separate backbone: and 3) It is OK if you’ve heard the term and nodded in recognition, without having the faintest idea of what it really means.

Unidimensionality refers to the existence of one underlying measurement construct (dimension) that accounts for variation in examinee responses. Violating this assumption could severely bias item and ability parameter estimation. In this study, we employ polytomous item responses to compare two methods that have received increased attention in recent years: Rasch model analysis (Rasch, 1960/1980) and Parallel analysis (Horn, 1965) with TETRAD (Glymour, 1982), a method for evaluating assessment structure that is less well-known in the educational measurement community, though confirmatory TETRAD analysis has been developed by Bollen and Ting (1993, 1998, 2000) for identifying causal indicators.
Many methods of investigating unidimensionality are available. Two notable reviews of methods and indices of unidimensionality have been conducted within the last twenty-five years. Hattie’s (1985) review evaluated numerous standard approaches and showed that many lacked empirical support for the adequate assessment of unidimensionality.
More recently, Tate (2003) conducted a review of methods and indices employed with dichotomous items, finding that options for assessing dimensionality had expanded and improved, and that most methods perform effectively “within the limits of their associated perspectives and assumptions.” While this study highlights the TETRAD method, compared to Rasch model and Parallel analyses, there are several established methods that are well-documented and widely used. As a geospatial program installed on the computer, Google Earth users have access to detailed imagery constantly downloaded, as different areas are panned or zoomed. It is possible to use Google Earth without an internet connection, but functionality is limited to low resolution satellite imagery, imagery cached on the computer from recent use, and locally saved KML (Keyhold Markup Language) files.
Google started the ‘Google Earth Outreach’ program in 2007 to help US and Europe-based non-profit organizations use Google Earth and Maps in their work.
