DownloadFundamentals of Concurrent Programming for .NETMany developers will have read Herb Sutter’s article “The Free Lunch is Over” which talks about the future speed increases of CPUs. The good news is that they will get significantly faster, but the bad news is that you won’t see all of the possible performance gains unless you write your application to take advantage of them. Over the last few years the increase in clock speeds has slowed down, and chip manufacturers are focussing more and more on concurrent execution of code. Hyperthreading was the first step, which allows a single processor core to execute two threads in parallel, but the future is multi-core chips which will allow many threads to execute truly independently. Intel is already talking about chips with over a hundred cores, so if your code is single-threaded you may only be using one hundredth of the available processing power!
This Charteris White Paper introduces the fundamentals that will allow you to begin writing concurrent applications, and is intended to be easier to read than much of the material on this subject. It is targeted at developers who have some experience of developing on the .NET Framework, and ideally in C# as this is my language of choice for the code samples. No prior knowledge of concurrent programming or multi-threading is needed, though even experienced developers in this area may find some new and surprising information.
The first section of this paper provides background information about threads, fibers, the thread pool asynchronous methods and events particularly with respectTransforming Nigeria Health Care System through Wireless Sensor NetworksAn application domain that makes use of wireless sensor network technology can be found in the area of medical monitoring. This field ranges from monitoring patients in the hospital using wireless sensors in order to remove the constraints of tethering patients to big bulky, wired monitoring devices to monitoring people in their everyday lives to provide early detection and intervention for various types of disease. This paper discusses scenarios where these sensors which vary fromminiature, body-worn sensors to external sensors such as video camera or positioning devices are applicable and presents a report of ongoing research on telemedicine at FUTA Akure.
Advances in wireless sensor networking have opened up new opportunities in healthcare systems. Recent technological advances in sensors, low-power integrated circuits, and wireless communications have enabled the design of low-cost, miniature, lightweight, and intelligent physiological sensor nodes. These nodes, capable of sensing, processing, and communicating one or more vital signs, can be seamlessly integrated into Wireless Personal or Body Area Networks (WPANs or WBANs) for implementing high quality health care.
Wireless Sensor Networks have gained a lot of attention lately. Due to technological advances, building small-sized, energy-efficient reliable devices, capable of communicating with each other and organizing themselves in ad hoc networks have become possible.
These devices have brought a new perspective to the world of computers: they can be embedded into the environment in such a way that the user is unaware or aware of them. There is no need for reconfiguration and maintenance as the network organizes itself to informRX-V540/RX-V440 U AVReceiver Owners ManualAbout this manual
• This document is the owner’s manual for both the RX-V540 and RX-V440. For details on various functions unique to each model, descriptions given for each model name.
• y indicates a tip for your operation.
• Some operations can be performed by using either the buttons on the main unit or on the remote control. In cases when the button names differ between the main unit and the remote control, the button name on the remote control is given in parentheses.
• This manual is printed prior to production. Design and specifications are subject to change in part for the reason of the improvement in operativity ability, and others. In this case, the product has priority.
Installing batteries in the remote control
Insert the batteries in the correct direction by aligning the + and – marks on the batteries with the polarity markings (+ and –) inside the battery compartment.
1 Press the part marked with a and slide off the battery compartment cover.
2 Insert the four batteries supplied (AAA, R03, UM-4) according to the polarity markings on the inside of the battery compartment.
3 Slide the cover back on so that it snaps into place.

Unlike other games that tried this proven recipe, Scarface really managed to make itself noticed. Some might say that the gameplay is way too similar but in fact, it’s just extremely well implemented. Overall, it’s a great game that should be played just for the chance of experiencing the life of Tony Montana! Cheat mode: Pause game play, then enter one of the following codes at the “Cheats” screen. Mission cheats are unlocked after playing a mission. Saving the game is disabled while cheat codes are active.

The life of an organization is literally represented inside its database servers. Take away the ability to reliably run enterprise applications or complete customer transactions and you will watch the business come to a standstill. One quantifiable indicator of risk to the enterprise of business disruption, or leakage of confidential data, is the number of vulnerabilities that exist in the technical infrastructure. There is a correlation between the number of vulnerabilities and the number of undiscovered vulnerabilities as well as the risk to the enterprise of an exploit successfully launched against the vulnerable database. It is very clear that the more vulnerabilities that exist, the more likely it is that an attack will be successful.
With this in mind, ESG compiled Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) data from the National Vulnerability Database to compare security vulnerabilities between commercial database offerings from Microsoft, Oracle and the open source MySQL. Oracle, traditionally a company that holds its security cards very close to the vest, has been disclosing large numbers of security vulnerabilities over the past few quarters. Microsoft has gone through its own soul-searching when it comes to security, from openly disclosing defects to a complete revamping of its engineering process with its Security Development Lifecycle (SDL). Microsoft SQL Server 2005 is particularly worth examining as it is the first major product release that Microsoft has put through the SDL.

Sadly, it's no Disney story - in fact it's more likely to have been pulled from the pages of the Brothers Grimm. Whilst writing the EJB modules for our JGenerator product, we started punting an email back and forth containing all the issues we had with EJB. And there were many. Before we knew it we ended up with 101 howlers. In this article we present an edited version of the email. It isn't a complete list and there may be some overlapping issues. If there is enough interest we will turn it into a more formal analysis.
Before you flame us for chasing after your sacred cow with a big stick, all three of us have belonged to the "pro-Java" lobby since Java was in its first beta, and we still do. We have evangelised Java at every company we have worked at. However, EJB just presents so much that is wrong and messed up that we felt we had to speak out.
The 101 issues are divided into the following categories:
• Conceptual
• Design
• Development
• Deployment
• Runtime
• Knock-On Effects
And finally there's a conclusion, containing some heartfelt suggestions for improving the EJB spec. We want Java and J2EE to succeed. We want it to remain the platform for developing server-side applications. We just hope that somebody at Sun is paying attention…

Download LinkParallel Prefix Network Generation: an Application of Functional ProgrammingParallel prefix networks are used in priority encoders, and to compute carries in fast adders. A typical microprocessor contains many such networks, and often they are hot- spots. Although parallel prefix (or scan) has been much studied, surprisingly many questions remain unanswered. As geometries shrink, it is not at all clear how to make low power prefix networks with the desired timing properties. Here, I develop a method of writing very highly parameterised parallel prefix network generators in which we specify the combinators used to build the networks and then search for a topology that matches the given delay constraints. This first case study indicates that, in this functional setting, combinators and search fit well together. The resulting prefix networks are both small and shallow, and likely to be useful in low power applications.
Parallel prefix is one of the fundamental algorithms of computer science, and it has been much studied. Yet many theoretical and practical questions remain open. On the theoretical side, we have not had good enough methods to design small shallow prefix networks with limited fanout. We have not either had good enough methods of producing networks that are adapted to the delay profile of their inputs. These are the problems that I solve towards the end of this paper. Both of these problems are interesting in practice too. Small networks promise low power, and here I show first results indicating that we can achieve low power in practice, although much remains to be done.
The approach that I
