  • Correcting Astigmatism in Diode Lasers
  • Astigmatism is an inherent property of the output beam of diode lasers. In applications requiring collimation or transformation of the diode laser’s beam, this astigmatism must be considered, and often corrected, if the final wavefront is to approach the diffraction limit. Diode lasers are p-n junction devices, where radiation created by injection of carriers across the junction is confined by a tiny optical waveguide. This waveguide, with its plano, partially reflecting end facets perpendicular to the junction, forms the Fabry-Perot cavity of the diode laser. Two general types of optical waveguides may be found in diode lasers. The first is a dielectric slab, or index-guided, waveguide, in which the optical energy is confined through total internal reflection. This is achieved by surrounding the gain region with layers of material with a lower refractive index. In a gain-guided optical waveguide, in contrast, the energy is confined by surrounding the optical gain region with a region... Download

  • Convergence – Mobile Web 2.0
  • The evolution of Web 2.0 has deep roots in our human psyche. Web 2.0 is about connecting two or more users with each other, creating communities, connecting assets to owners and growing virally. Enterprise Web 2.0 involves another level of engagement by connecting assets to people, and enterprises to enterprises. Tangible “connected value” comes in various shades, leaving the phylogeny difficult to define. Fundamentally, the Internet is far ahead of the mobile industry in developing 2.0 applications. A concept that has captured Web 2.0 is annotated broadcast television. This includes a term called “vommenting” (spelling is correct). Enterprise Web 2.0 applications, and its coordination of documents, workflow and communications, gives rise to a term called “Webification.” The goal is that the IT organization becomes a catalyst for organizational change through the use of the flexibility of business-driven technology. Some of the examples outlined in this report are 5 to 10 years away; however, the principles which provide guidance are in development, now, on a global scale. This report comments on a modicum of the evolving Web 2.0, and Mobile Web 2.0, environments. It is up to the user, and the enterprise, to experiment and implement. The Internet is evolving from desire, to human interaction. In the field of telecommunications, this is a multi-layered integrated world. It came from a simple tethered telephony solution - the land line telephone. Therefore, there is a revolution developing at the edge of the network which will impact our society in many fundamental ways. Individuals are increasingly connected through

  • The Sleekest Link Algorithm
  • How does Google decide which web sites are important? It uses an ingenious algorithm that exploits the structure of the web and is resistant to hacking. Here, we describe this PageRank algorithm, illustrate it by example, and show how it can be interpreted as a Jacobi iteration and a teleporting random walk. We also ask the algorithm to rank the undergraduate mathematics classes offered at the University of Strathclyde. PageRank draws upon ideas from linear algebra, graph theory and stochastic processes, and it throws up research-level challenges in scientific computing. It thus forms an exciting and modern application area that could brighten up many a mathematics class syllabus. PageRank, a sleek algorithm in computational graph theory, shows how one killer mathematical idea can build up a global brand name. Google began as a research project for Ph.D. candidates Page and Brin when they were, respectively, 24 and 23 years old. It now answers over 200 million queries per day. Our aim here is to describe PageRank, illustrate it via simple examples, and use it to pull together ideas from numerical analysis and stochastic processes. We also point out, via a somewhat frivolous example, how its utility extends well beyond the world wide web. The observations in sections 4 and 5 are not new. Indeed, both the linear system/eigenvector formulation and the random walk interpretation are mentioned in the original work [15]. However, we believe that there are benefits to be had from a unified, low-level review—in particular, teachers in further and higher
  • SAP Tutorial Book: The DCOM Connector Manual
  • DCOM provides a standardized basis for creating and integrating distributed software components. External client applications can use DCOM as infrastructure for their communication with SAP servers, to access R/3 components. With this technology, R/3 components such as BAPIs or remote function modules appear as COM objects and use the runtime environment of the Microsoft Transaction Server (MTS). The DCOM Connector provides a C++ Template Library developed by SAP, which you can use to create COM objects from business objects of the R/3 system and administer them. The two scenarios below describe the different uses of the DCOM Connector: PC Client Applications Client applications on a frontend use DCOM to access COM objects installed on one or more MTS servers. In such a scenario, all you need to do is distribute the client application software to different PCs. It is not necessary to install any additional SAP software on the PC, since MTS components are accessed remotely. The DCOM Connector allows you to q Concentrate on programming the client application without having to consider the RFC protocol. q Simplify table handling with ADO using standard tools (for example, Data Bound Control). q Use comfortable development environments (VB 5/6) for developing the clients. WEB Scenario You use Active Server Pages (ASP) to create WEB pages whose HTML coding contains executable scripts on the server side. ASP communicates with the MTS via DCOM to access MTS components. The MTS can run on the same machine as the web server (IIS), but this is no

  • PHP Leads Web 2.0
  • Everyone is currently talking about Web 2.0, it is the next big thing in the IT industry. But most people have only a vague idea of what Web 2.0 is about — and what it is not. They tend to think of Web 2.0 as a collection of websites and fancy web-based applications. What they don’t see is the shift of paradigm that Web 2.0 brings — and the emergence of new technologies under the surface. Defining Web 2.0 If you ask 20 people in the IT industry to define what Web 2.0 is, it is most likely that you will receive 20 different answers. This shows one of the main problems when talking about it: Web 2.0 is not a fixed standard or product, and the viewpoint of the individual influences his perception of Web 2.0. For consumers or journalists outside the industry, Web 2.0 is a number of applications, websites and interfaces — Google, Flickr.com or even eBay. From a developer’s perspective, it is a collection of APIs, formats and code. And a CIO or CTO of a large company might see a new approach for software architecture that helps him to improve his application landscape. But it is hard to write an article about a new trend without giving a proper definition of it, isn’t it? Though my definition is definitely subjective, I tried to find some least common denominators. In my opinion, Web 2.0 usually includes one or more of these elements: • Rich Web Applications are most likely built
