  • AI Meets Web 2.0: Building the Web of Tomorrow, Today
  • Imagine an Internet-scale Knowledge System where people and intelligent agents can collaborate on solving complex problems in business, engineering, science, medicine, and other endeavors. Its resources include semantically tagged Web sites, wikis, and blogs, as well as social networks, vertical search engines and a vast array of Web services from business processes to AI planners and domain models. Research prototypes of decentralized knowledge systems have been demonstrated for years, but now, thanks to the Web and Moore's Law, they appear ready for prime time. Architectural concepts for incrementally growing an Internet-scale knowledge system are introduced, with descriptions of early commercial deployments in manufacturing and healthcare. I want to share a vision of how to build, or more precisely, grow Internet-scale knowledge systems. Such systems enable large numbers of human and computer agents to collaborate on solving complex problems in engineering, science, and business, or simply managing the complexities of life (say planning a trip or an event). It’s a vision that’s been evolving over 20 years since my days as an AI researcher, and more recently as an Internet entrepreneur. Thanks to the explosive growth of the Web, it’s a vision whose time has come. I also have a larger goal: to bridge the AI and Web communities, which have so much to give to and learn from each other. 25 years ago, at the birth of AAAI, Allan Newell articulated a set of criteria that a system had to exhibit to be considered intelligent (See Table 1). Newell was very

  • Microsoft: Silverlight More than a Flash
  • Microsoft gives a name to its Flash-killer technology. The technology formerly known as WPF/E is now known as Silverlight. Microsoft has given a go-to-market name for its cross-platform, cross-browser plug-in for delivering the next generation of user experiences and rich Internet applications for the Web. The technology formerly known as WPF/E is now known as Silverlight. Microsoft announced Silverlight at the National Association of Broadcasters conference in Las Vegas on April 16. The NAB announcement highlights Silverlight uses for media users. The software company will announce further details about the technology at its own Mix07 conference, which starts at the end of April and runs through May 2 in Las Vegas. Forest Key, a director of product management in the Microsoft Server and Tools Division, said Silverlight integrates with existing Web technologies and assets to provide higher quality experiences with lower costs for media delivery. In a briefing with eWEEK, Key demonstrated how Silverlight offers consistent experiences to both Mac and Windows users on a variety of browsers, including Internet Explorer, FireFox and Safari. As for which platform Silverlight will support next, Key said, "Linux is an open question. We're looking at the desktops and browsers by volume. We want to put muscle behind supporting the bulk of the market." And Linux support is still under discussion, he said. Silverlight uses WMV (Windows Media Video), Microsoft's implementation of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers VC-1 video standard, ensuring compatibility with the millions of hours of content already available on the Web. • Understanding CPU Upgrade pdf
  • What you need to know before upgrading your CPU? In theory, one way to increase the performance of a PC with little effort is to upgrade the CPU. Surely it can’t be that difficult? Actually there’s lots to think about. It seems that every time a new software product is released the system require- ments are increased - everything from the hard drive capacity and CPU speed to the required RAM. One of the apparently obvious ways to gain a speed increase is by upgrading the CPU. But such an upgrade isn’t always cost effective and in some cases simply increasing the available RAM can help considerably to boost the apparent speed of the PC. Sometimes though the best (and maybe only) option is to upgrade the CPU, although this can be a more involved process than it might at first seem due to socket/motherboard incompatibilities, differing CPU and RAM speed requirements, cooling problems and inevitably assorted knock-on effects causing the upgrade to be anything but cost effective. Also, it is worth remembering that just because the replacement CPU has, for example, double the clock rate of the old unit doesn’t necessarily mean that the new one will increase the processing performance of the PC in question by anything like 100%.
