It doesn’t cover advanced topics such as the development of new application modules or the installation and configuration process. We assume that you have a running COVISE on your machine. For installation guide read the files README and INSTALL.TXT which come with your COVISEdistribution. For developing new application modules read the COVISE Programming Guide.
COVISE is a Collaborative Visualization and Simulation Environment developed at the Computing Center of the University of Stuttgart. It is an extendable distributed software environment to integrate supercomputer based simulations, postprocessing, and visualization functionality with cooperative working in a seamless manner.
The tutorial contains the five chapters:
In Chapter 1 Starting COVISE you learn how to initiate a single user session and load a saved session.
The functionality of some basic modules (RWCovise, DomainSurface, CuttingSurface) is explained.
Chapter 2 Using the Inventor Renderer gives a short introduction to the typical work with the Renderer.
Chapter 3 Working with Modules covers module ports and module parameters.
Chapter 4 Analysis of 3D Data describes the basic steps in analyzing complex 3D data with the general
COVISE modules. (This chapter has been reworked to make the user familiar with the ’Complex Modules’ for building maps quicker and easier.)

Introduction to Checkout by Amazon
Checkout by Amazon gives your customers an easy way to use their Amazon Payments accounts to complete purchases on your website—you simply add Checkout buttons, which are snippets of HTML code that you add to a page on your website. With Checkout buttons, you can offer Amazon Payments on your website, whether Amazon Payments is the only payment method you show, or Amazon Payments is just one of the payment options.
You can integrate your website with Checkout by Amazon using a Checkout button. You have two options for using a Checkout button:
• You can create a simple Checkout button that purchases just a single item.
• You can build a Checkout button that gathers the contents of a shopping cart and creates an order with multiple items.
If you use a simple Checkout button, then your customer clicks that button to purchase an item and generates an immediate order using a shopping cart with just one entry. Your customer goes to Amazon to confirm payment for the order; then, the customer returns to your website for further shopping.

Starting with a 4 and ½ inch square stock material, the parts will be clamped along the top and bottom edges. It is not necessary to show the clamps in AUTO-CODE. It is necessary that you know where they are located relative to the drawing and adding them to the drawing can help clarify the placement of the stock for the machine tool operator if you supply them with a copy of the drawing.

Vista and Microsoft Visual Studio 2005. Note that Windows 98 or Me are not able to run Visual Studio 2005. You should be familiar with the Windows operating system and PCs in general, and be willing and able to figure out the Visual Studio 2005 environment.
The emphasis in class will be on general programming concepts, not on the workings of Visual Studio (often referred to as just VS), and the code you write will be virtually identical to code written by students using a Macintosh.
Note that currently the cluster and Lair (the Tressider computer cluster) computers do not have VS 2005 installed. They have VS 2003, but it does not have our libraries. We are hoping that we will have this fixed soon. We will make an announcement on the course website when we have a version of VS on the Stanford computers with our libraries
Getting Started
In order to use your PC to write the programs for the class, you will need to install both a compiler and the special 106 libraries for your system.
Step #1: Getting and installing the Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 compiler
For CS106X, we are using Microsoft’s Visual Studio 2005 compiler. To install VS, you will download disk images of the installer CDs, burn them to physical CDs, and then use those to install the program.
