This manual is — apart from the “Getting started” chapter — not a replacement for
a good CORBA book. There are many excellent introductory books on CORBA
fundamentals, for example [4] or [5].
This manual does also not contain the precise specifications of the CORBA standard. This would definitely be out of its scope. However, for the understanding of this manual, a good knowledge of the CORBA specification in [1] is absolutely necessary. Especially the chapters covering CORBA IDL and the IDL–to–C++ mapping should be studied thoroughly. Do not expect any of the CORBA teaching books to be a reference for the IDL–to–C++ mapping. The books currently available only give an overview and are neither complete nor up–to–date. There is no substitute for the official CORBA specification as defined in [1].

Setup: The current version of the application is configured to use an HSQLDB database (although connections to a MySQL database and an MS Access database are also included in comments at the beginning of ClientBillingDB.java).
To use an HSQLDB, download the HSQLDB system from http://hsqldb.sourceforge.net/ and copy hsqldb.jar into the JRE lib/ext folder (this jar file is also included in the HSQLDB folder). A sample database (clients.properties and clients.script) has been included in the project folder.
To use a MYSQL database, download the MYSQL server from http://www.mysql.com/, install the server and create the database. A script that creates the database has been included in the MYSQL folder in the project folder. If MYSQL is used, it is worthwhile downloading the MYSQL Control Center which provides GUI access to the databases. To use an MS Access database under Windows, an ODBC connection that links the database, “clients.mdb”, and the logical database name used in the system, Clients, must be defined. ODBC connections are defined in the control panel (ODBC) on earlier versions of Windows and are defined in “DataSources (ODBC)” in the Administrative Tools section of the Control Panel in more recent versions of Windows.

• Generics permit classes, structs, interfaces, delegates, and methods to be parameterized by the types of data they store and manipulate. Generics are useful because they provide stronger compile-time type checking, require fewer explicit conversions between data types, and reduce the need for boxing operations and runtime type checks.
• Anonymous methods allow code blocks to be written “in-line” where delegate values are expected. Anonymous methods are similar to lambda functions in the Lisp pro- gramming language. C# 2.0 supports the creation of “closures” where anonymous methods access surrounding local variables and parameters.
• Iterators are methods that incrementally compute and yield a sequence of values. Itera- tors make it easy for a type to specify how the foreach statement will iterate over its elements.
• Partial types allow classes, structs, and interfaces to be broken into multiple pieces stored in different source files for easier development and maintenance. Additionally, partial types allow separation of machine-generated and user-written parts of types so that it is easier to augment code generated by a tool.
This chapter introduces these new features. Following the introduction are four chapters that provide a complete technical specification of the features.
The language extensions in C# 2.0 were designed to ensure maximum compatibility with existing code. For example, even though C# 2.0 gives special meaning to the words where, yield, and partial in certain contexts, these words can still be used as identifiers. The 4.0.4 version of Tomcat is very new. I tested it on Windows but still not on Linux. Besides, which WARP Con- nector version to use is not clear. The main problem is to make Apache and TomCat work together. This is done through the WebApp connector, which installation is not trivial.
This can be done with the APJ connector (mod_jk or mod_fk2) too (and Coyote ?). But we will not be treat this here. It is a more "traditional" solution. I didn't find a lot of information which compared the APJ and WARP con- nectors, but from the little I have read, the WARP one seemed the best. Yet, you were always encouraged to break the problem down into one or more subprograms or functions. When you break a program down into a series of functions, you are doing what is called functional abstraction. This book begins with a formalization of this process of functional abstraction: its methods, techniques, benefits, and so on.
A program also has another form of abstraction — data abstraction. At a low level, we define two variables to “hold” the user’s entered cost and quantity values and define another variable to hold the total cost of their order which can subsequently be calculated. In essence, these variables can be considered an abstraction as well. When the program executes and the user enters a quantity of 10 and cost of 42.00, the variables then hold a “real” value. However, from a program design point of view, most all of the variables you have defined and used in programs to this point are instances of the intrinsic built-in C++ data types, such as int, double, and long. (If you have studied the C++ structures, those are not intrinsic data types.) Now when we speak of data abstraction, we normally do not mean this low level way of thinking about data. There are several advantages to weaving Ada into the Common Language Environment provided by the .NET environment. This paper explains our approach and current progress on the research. We provide the means to extract Ada specification files from Microsoft Intermediate Language (MSIL) code and compile Ada programs into MSIL.
Microsoft’s .NET environment provides a large set of object- oriented libraries for application development, targeted especially for web-based applications. [11,12] It is an entirely new framework for programming Windows (and possibly other) machines. One of the key goals of .NET was to provide language interoperability. Ada shares similar goals, and was the first language to include mixed-language pragmas as part of its specification. Our A# project seeks to create a fully-interoperable environment for an Ada programmer to use .NET. Ada programmers will be able to use libraries written by other .NET programmers even if the libraries are written in other languages. Ada programmers will also be able to share their libraries with programmers using other languages.
This paper presents research being done at the Air Force Academy on the A# project. We will discuss our approach for compiling Ada into MSIL, extracting Ada specifications from MSIL, and our progress to date.
