  • Web 2.0: Building Online Communities Using Social Networking Technologies
  • Over the past three years, Internet web sites have been evolving into a series of platforms organizing content and communications among individuals and organizations for the purpose of social networking. Sites like MySpace, YouTube and Wikipedia have shifted online activities from “browsing” to collaborating, interacting and personalizing. MySpace boasts over 100 million accounts, YouTube serves an average of 100 million video streams per day and Wikipedia contains over 1.7 million articles in English edited by users from all over the world. As a result, web design and organizational thinking in this new era needs to be more focused on building event-driven experiences, rather than simply designing information silos ammended with numerous hyperlinks. But how do consumers and businesses keep up with these changes and more importantly how do they exploit the new technologies in ways that benefit customers, employees, and even their industry? This issue of Educational Update is designed for that very purpose. WEB 2.0 Technologies Web 2.0 is the collection of server-based solutions that have allowed the web to become a publishing platform. Instead of the traditional one-way form of web authoring, these solutions invite all Internet users to share, collaborate, and contribute in the process of website development. Users now have an increased ability to contribute text, bookmarks, photos, audio, videos and more to many different websites. This ease of access to web content alters the way users interact with the new world wide web. Users can now build an online social network where community members contribute content, share

  • The layout of controls in the Ribbon changes when the width of the application window changes. When displayed on a large monitor, the Ribbon will adjust to show the “large versions” of groups in the Ribbon. When displayed on a small monitor, or when the user chooses to manually reduce the size of the application window, the Ribbon will adjust to show the “small versions” of groups in the Ribbon. The Ribbon is not designed for a particular display resolution. The Ribbon simply provides the best arrangement of the controls for the application and displays that arrangement appropriately for every possible size of the application window. The figure below illustrates how the layouts of controls on Microsoft Word’s Insert Tab change when the application window is horizontally resized. Note that some controls change from being displayed as large controls to being displayed as small controls when the Ribbon is narrower. Also note that some text labels for controls are removed from the Ribbon when the Ribbon is narrower. DEFINING GROUPS FOR RIBBON RESIZING 1. Resizing the width of the application window MUST change the layout of controls on the Ribbon. 2. The layout of controls on the Ribbon MUST change in real-time when the application window is resized by dragging with the mouse. The change in the layout of controls on the Ribbon MUST NOT be delayed until after the application window has been resized and the left mouse button is released. • How to Do Everything with Web 2.0 Mashups Chapter 1
  • This chapter presents a few of the thousands of mashups you can find today on the Web. No one knows how many other mashups live behind corporate firewalls, but, chances are, the number is large. The mashups in this chapter were chosen to show the variety of the world of mashups. Some of them are proofs-of-concept, others are works-in-progress, and others are experiments. Others are actual, live products or marketing tools. Mashups often provide visualization of information, and, frequently, that visualization is in the form of interactive maps. The release of the Google maps API was a major factor in the interest in mashups, in large part because so much information lends itself to mapping. As you will see in later chapters of this book, new technologies grouped together as Web 2.0 and AJAX are the building blocks of mashups. In conjunction with APIs such as Google mapping, eBay, Yahoo!, Flickr, and others, you will soon be able to build your own mashups like the ones shown in this chapter. AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) is a term first used by Jesse James Garrett in 2005. AJAX is generally considered to include JavaScript, XML, XHTML, DOM, and XMLHttpRequest, all of which are technologies developed in the 1990s, some of them in conjunction with Microsoft’s Remote Scripting project. Despite this plethora of technologies, the principle is quite simple: a Web page can retrieve and display data without having to refresh or reload the entire page. To do this,

The major user benefits include: Easy capture of visual content recorded on the TANDBERG Content Server from the SharePoint interface The ability to use predefined recording templates with customized dial settings and populated with conference metadata Easy access to recorded visual content on the TANDBERG Content Server through a content listing Web Part. See the User scenarios section of this document for some creative ideas on how to use the Web Parts to add visual communications content to your SharePoint site The ConferenceCreate Web Part allows users to make calls to H.323-compatible video conference – endpoints or MCU conferences and to record the call on a TANDBERG Content Server. To make a call, type in the IP address, E.164 alias or H.323 ID of the endpoint or MCU you want to dial, then click on the Place Call button. Click the Refresh Page button to display status information for your call on the web page. Your Active Calls display information about the bitrate the call was made at, the codecs used for the call, the number dialled, the running duration of the call and the call status. • Asus CUSL2 Radified Users Guide Manual
  • The info contained in this User’s Guide for the Asus CUSL2 motherboard comes from first-hand experience. I installed a CUSL2 myself (replaced my trusty BH6 + C300a). I got my board when the BIOS was still in beta for 1002. Further insights were gleaned from reading posts at the asusboards.com forums, and also from feedback received from other CUSL2 users. This guide is intended for people who already know they want the board, especially those who’ve just ordered one & are preparing to install it. If your looking for a review, see here. I’ve seen the board selling for ~US$135 on Pricewatch. This is a User’s guide, not a hardware review. I’m not testing the board, rather I live with it. So I’ve included the kinds of things that I’d like to know before installing a new mobo (with a new chipset). Neither is this a FAQ. The only question of concern here is, “How can I get my CUSL2 up & running fast & painlessly as possible?” You won’t find any advertising on my site, so you don’t have to worry about minced words. I try to tell it like I see it, not make you read between lines. Since I don’t accept advertising (at least not yet), there’s no rea$on for me to parallax my views. I tried to keep this guide slim, but it has grown plump, thx primarily to other users, the world over, for sending the helpful tips they’ve learned. This guide began as a

  • Generation Web 2.0
  • Web 2.0 is the name for the latest internet technologies that enable users from around the world to connect online and share their knowledge and expertise. These technologies include blogs, wikis, social networking sites (MySpace, Bebo, Facebook), and community tagging tools (such as del.icio.us and Digg). In online communities the norms around who has control, privacy and openness have shifted. Danah Boyd, a researcher with the University of Southern California, says that ‘New social technologies have altered the underlying architecture of social interaction and information distribution. They (young people) are embracing this change, albeit often with the clumsy candour of an elephant in a china shop. Meanwhile, most adults are panicking.’ These technologies, along with devices such as digital cameras, allow young people to be producers and consumers of content and services. Most will now have heard of YouTube and Flickr, sites that allow users to share, comment on and rate videos and photos. This is the era of the read/write web where anyone can publish and rules about what is acceptable/unacceptable are being re-written. At education.au, we now share our knowledge through blogs on our company website. To join the discussions, visit http://blogs.educationau.edu.au/ Mashups take ‘live’ data and represent it in many forms; for example, you may have seen community generated recommended restaurants on Google Earth. myfuture will soon offer users Google maps of where courses are offered and the nearest train station to the providers’ location. Finally, technologies such as RSS (Really Simple Syndication) allow you to filter the increasingly complex information-rich world
  • Crawling Ajax-driven Web 2.0 Applications
  • Crawling web applications is one of the key phases of automated web application scanning. The objective of crawling is to collect all possible resources from the server in order to automate vulnerability detection on each of these resources. A resource that is overlooked during this discovery phase can mean a failure to detect some vulnerabilities. The introduction of Ajax throws up new challenges [1] for the crawling engine. New ways of handling the crawling process are required as a result of these challenges. The objective of this paper is to use a practical approach to address this issue using rbNarcissus, Watir and Ruby. Usually crawling engines are “protocol-driven” and open a socket connection on the target host or IP address and port. Once a connection is in place the crawler sends HTTP requests and tries to interpret responses. All these responses are parsed and resources are collected for future access. The resource parsing process is crucial and the crawler tries to collect possible sets of resources by fetching links, scripts, flash components and other significant data. The “protocol-driven” approach does not work when the crawler comes across an Ajax embedded page. This is because all target resources are part of JavaScript code and are embedded in the DOM context. It is important to both understand and trigger this DOM-based activity. In the process, this has lead to another approach called “event-driven” crawling. It has following three key components 1. Javascript analysis and interpretation with linking to Ajax 2. DOM event handling and dispatching 3. Dynamic
