  • Just 4.6 pounds light enough to carry most anywhere, yet hefty enough to convey a feeling of solid construction. I believe it was Walt Mossberg at The Wall Street Journal who best summed up the 12-in. PowerBook. It s like one of those all-metal Leica cameras that just reeks of quality. I have to admit having taken a roller-coaster ride of sorts in the past couple of years since Ap p l e i n t roduced its aluminum PowerBooks. I fell fir s t for the 17-in. model (such widescreen real estate), then swooned for the first-generation 12-in. model (a hot little number in more ways than one, espe-cially when you sat it in your lap), then decided that for most users the midrange 15-in. model is the perfect blend of portability and power. Along the way, I ve bought, borrowed or used just about eve ry combo of PowerBook features that Apple has built, and while I seem to have fin a l l y settled on the 17-in. model for my own use (I have one of the newer 1.67-GHz G4 PowerBooks at home), the entry - s i ze model is no slouch.   • What is Web 2.0? Ideas, technologies and implications for education
  • Within 15 years the Web has grown from a group work tool for scientists at CERN into a global information space with more than a billion users. Currently, it is both returning to its roots as a read/write tool and also entering a new, more social and participatory phase. These trends have led to a feeling that the Web is entering a ‘second phase’—a new, ‘improved’ Web version 2.0. But how justified is this perception? This TechWatch report was commissioned to investigate the substance behind the hyperbole surrounding ‘Web 2.0’ and to report on the implications this may have for the UK Higher and Further Education sector, with a special focus on collection and preservation activities within libraries. The report argues that by separating out the discussion of Web technologies (ongoing Web development overseen by the W3C), from the more recent applications and services (social software), and attempts to understand the manifestations and adoption of these services (the ‘big ideas’), decision makers will find it easier to understand and act on the strategic implications of ‘Web 2.0’. Indeed, analysing the composition and interplay of these strands provides a useful framework for understanding its significance. The report establishes that Web 2.0 is more than a set of ‘cool’ and new technologies and services, important though some of these are.   • How to Use StreamSpin for Creating Your Own Services
  • The center for Data-intensive Systems (Daisy) at Aalborg University is currently working on a large project in which they combine the two worlds of Web 2.0 and Location-based services. The project known as the StreamSpin-project currently employs numerous developers. Furthermore it is planned that students will have the opportunity to develop their own services for the system during the coming semesters in order to mature the system and its service deliveries. It is the overall purpose of the StreamSpin project to be for Location-based services what YouTube is for video . Thereby, the vision is that virtually anybody should be able to create their own services and publish them to the masses or limit the publication to close friends. The motivation behind the project is the vision that the web now is becoming more and more mobile. Hence the need for Location-based services will grow massively in the near future. People using mobile phones with GPS or other positioning systems will have the possibility of knowing their position at a given time. This opens up for numerous advantageous scenarios in which a user of a mobile phone could retrieve information based on position, time and a customizable pro le. Systems that displays this behavior already exist, however the StreamSpin-project proposes that services are pushed to the mobile device rather than requested by the mobile device itself.   • Using Web Analytics with Microsoft Silverlight
  • Silverlight is Microsoft’s cross-browser, cross-platform browser plug-in that allows the creation of interactive web applications that employ high quality streaming media, vector graphics, images, and animation. Deployed as a plug-in for the major browsers on the Windows, Mac and Linux (supported by Novell) operating systems, web developers can craft interactive applications that have an identical user experience on the vast majority of web browsers deployed today. Silverlight addresses a disconnect that exists today in web development workflow where the design intent of graphics designers and interaction designers cannot be faithfully communicated to and crafted by the web developers. In Silverlight, this intent is created in design tools like Expression Design and Expression Blend and passed off to web developers in XML-based XAML data files. The fidelity of the designers’ ideas is kept as there is a clear separation between the design in XAML and the code in JavaScript. Silverlight is a browser plug-in that renders XAML and exposes a JavaScript programming model in 1.0, extending this with a .NET programming model and runtime in Silverlight 2. Since the Silverlight 2 runtime has full access to the HTML Document Object Model (DOM) and cross-domain data access abilities, it is possible for future Silverlight applications to implement analytics entirely in managed code or in JavaScript code that is invoked from the managed code. This architecture enables using AJAX-style programming patterns for building responsive, interactive, applications. In this tutorial we shall focus on how to convert a 2D drawing created in AutoCAD® into a 3D part model in Autodesk Inventor.
