  • Microsoft: Silverlight More than a Flash
  • Microsoft gives a name to its Flash-killer technology. The technology formerly known as WPF/E is now known as Silverlight. Microsoft has given a go-to-market name for its cross-platform, cross-browser plug-in for delivering the next generation of user experiences and rich Internet applications for the Web. The technology formerly known as WPF/E is now known as Silverlight. Microsoft announced Silverlight at the National Association of Broadcasters conference in Las Vegas on April 16. The NAB announcement highlights Silverlight uses for media users. The software company will announce further details about the technology at its own Mix07 conference, which starts at the end of April and runs through May 2 in Las Vegas. Forest Key, a director of product management in the Microsoft Server and Tools Division, said Silverlight integrates with existing Web technologies and assets to provide higher quality experiences with lower costs for media delivery. In a briefing with eWEEK, Key demonstrated how Silverlight offers consistent experiences to both Mac and Windows users on a variety of browsers, including Internet Explorer, FireFox and Safari. As for which platform Silverlight will support next, Key said, "Linux is an open question. We're looking at the desktops and browsers by volume. We want to put muscle behind supporting the bulk of the market." And Linux support is still under discussion, he said. Silverlight uses WMV (Windows Media Video), Microsoft's implementation of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers VC-1 video standard, ensuring compatibility with the millions of hours of content already available on the Web. • Web 2.0 and the Development of Information Services
  • Web service has evolved continuously to the point where it is now shifting from a provider-oriented service to a user-oriented one. Internet users now evaluate the trustworthiness of information posted on the Internet, and share their knowledge more widely on that information. This trend is also applicable to education-related information services. Education information services will be able to provide new opportunities for the education sector once education providers accept this new trend in the web world, thus creating new and vital services. Web 2.0 is certainly facilitating this kind of change in the education service sector. Concept and characteristics of Web 2.0 Web 2.0 is about openness, sharing and participation. An individual can post his or her own content on the web, and allow other people to share it. People participate in enhancing the value and quality of the content. Tim O’Reilly, CEO of the U.S. company O’Reilly Media, made seven definitions of Web 2.0, by gathering the common features of the companies that survived after the burst of the dot.com bubble. These are : The Web as a Platform, Harnessing Collective Intelligence, Data is the Next Intel Inside, End of the Software Release Cycle, Lightweight Programming Models, Software Above the Level of a Single Device, and Rich User Experiences. The application of Web 2.0 can be seen in the following. Download pdf Web 2.0 and the Development of Information Services

  • Foundations of Java - Chapter 1 Introduction to Java
  • Okay, enough of the convoluted history of Java the island and Java the platform. And yes, that is Java, the platform. What began in 1995 as just another programming language is now formally known as a platform. Beginning as a platform-neutral, Internet-friendly development language, Java has evolved into a means of creating programs for just about anything. Let’s step back to the beginning and see how it came about. Back in January 1991, a project by the name of Green began. The Green project’s purpose was to come up with a way of controlling set-top boxes, those smart cable TV access boxes. Because the hardware in the consumer devices was always changing, it became apparent to James Gosling, the “father” of Java, that C++ wasn’t appropriate for the job. As a result, the language called Oak was created; it was less susceptible to bugs and wouldn’t crash the whole system. It initially ran on a Hammer technology device called *7 (Star7). Cavorting across the touch screen was this little digital character named Duke, a helper agent, who would go off and do various tasks. (He later turned into the Java mascot.)
