  • Information Systems Planning in WEB 2.0, a new model approach
  • Since the beginning of the 90’s, organizations had been growing in a rapid way, becoming each more difficult to manage. The organization business cycle changed from 7 years in 1970-1980 to 12-18 months in the 90’s, and is even shorter nowadays. This change, transformed the organization world in a new and complex reality. To be able to deal with this reality, organizations put a big pressure in the information access and information became the organization most valuable asset. But this asset, information object, as some main characteristics: exists in larges quantities, as many different ways, is very volatile, must have confidentially, must have integrity, must have availability, in resume, can be very difficult to handle. It’s clear that managing this information reality is only possible with the adoption of information technologies and planning that adoption is a central need in order to get the correct solution for the problem. 1.1. Background Many studies mention that planning information systems is the major challenge for information systems managers (Hsu, 1995) and the organization information reality confirms that. Planning can be defined as “the activity in organizations life where is defined the future wanted for the information system and the way how this system should be supported by the information and communications technologies in order to achieve that support”(Amaral, 1994). Actual information systems planning deals with impact and alignment trying to change organizations with the use of technology, with impact planning or changing business, with alignment planning. 1.2. Alternatives But now, WEB 2.0 (Reilly, 2005) puts the power of
  • ConXML - Conversation XML Manual
  • ConXML is an XML format used to describe conversational applications between people and services using clients such as the mobile phone messaging, instant messenger, and email. It allows conversational applications to be developed and deployed in an analogous way to HTML for visual applications. Many kinds of ConXML applications can be developed. These applications can include: content sharing, event management, polling, order inquiry, package tracking, driving directions, emergency notification, fiight tracking, customer relationship management, prescription refilling, audio newsmagazines, real-estate information and national directory assistance applications. Just as HTML documents are interpreted by a visual web browser, ConXML documents are interpreted by a virtual conversation browser. This virtual browser is connected to the mobile, IM, and email networks allowing messages described in the ConXML docu- ments to be sent and received. Through HTTP this virtual browser fetches and interprets ConXML pages from other application servers while maintaining the state of the conversation in the virtual browser. It is very simple using this architecture to build highly complex ConXML applications that extend existing web applications, since the only requirements is to output an alternate markup while using the same business logic. The design decisions needed to build a conversation application are the same used to build a web application. Some applica- tions may use static ConXML pages, while others rely on dynamic ConXML page generation using an application server like RoR, Tomcat, or PHP. Download ConXML - Conversation XML Manual

  • The First Appearance of Web 2.0
  • It is hard to pinpoint the moment of Web 2.0’s emergence – because there was not one. The was no release of a single new technology. There was no single economic insight or business model that completely disrupted existing markets. There was no industry consortium that defined a new standard. If forced to pick a moment, perhaps Google’s IPO will serve historically as the marker – in the same way that Netscape’s IPO’s is often used to signify the birth of the dot com era. At any rate, at some point over the past 12 to 18 months several factors have aligned and a there is now recognition that the companies and web services that are moving the internet market today share many common characteristics. Formally, “Web 2.0” as a label was first used by Tim O’Reilly and Dale Dougherty of O’Reilly Publishing. The story goes that the two were brainstorming about the shared characteristics of today’s successful internet companies compared with the characteristics of the pre-dotcom bubble companies of 2000. Their brainstorming led to the birth of a conference – Web 2.0 (http://www.web2con.com/web2con/), which was held in October of 2004. The evolution of internet focused companies and services in the 13 months since that conference have helped to reinforce – and extend - their observations. Web 2.0 Characteristics Ultimately, Web 2.0 is an industry buzzword. Like any buzzword, it’s usefulness can be debated because they are easily mis-used and misunderstood. For me, it is best to think of “Web 2.0” as a

  • Build Your Own Database Driven Website Using PHP and MySQL, 3rd Edition (First 4 Chapters)
  • Over the course of this book, it will be my job to guide you as you take your first steps beyond the HTML world of client-side site design. Together, we’ll explore what it takes to develop the kind of large, content-driven sites that are so successful today, but which can be a real headache to maintain if they aren’t built right. Before we get started, you need to gather together the tools you’ll need for the job. In this first chapter, I’ll guide you as you download and set up the two software packages you’ll need: PHP and MySQL. PHP is a server-side scripting language. You can think of it as a “plug-in” for your Web server that will allow it to do more than just send plain Web pages when browsers request them. With PHP installed, your Web server will be able to read a new kind of file (called a PHP script) that can do things like retrieve up-to-the-minute information from a database and insert it into a Web page before sending it to the browser that requested it. PHP is completely free to download and use. To retrieve information from a database, you first need to have a database. That’s where MySQL comes in. MySQL is a relational database management system, or RDBMS. We’ll get into the exact role it plays and how it works later, but basically it’s a software package that is very good at the organization and management of large amounts of information. MySQL also makes

  • Aspects of AJAX
  • The basic elements for an application using the AJAX technologies, JavaScript and the XMLHttpRequest object, are not difficult to understand and there are many articles on the web that show how to use this object and declare that being AJAX. I think there are a lot more topics that should be understood and talked about. The right selection from the available technologies as well as a suitable abstraction in using these elements is important for the success of the realization of an application. One main goal behind the architecture of the AJAX engine was to build an AJAX framework that you can reuse every time you want some asynchronous processing or when you need a smart way to refresh information on the current web page. When targeting applications with some hundred sides and WebServices and with in sum about a thousand methods the developer must have a clear and simple kind and pattern for coding the JavaScript code on the client to avoid errors and to not think about the implementation details. Only by using a simple approach a good quality and maintenance can be achieved. The idea of the AJAX engine on the client is the simplification of the implementation of the code that we need for implementing a specific functionality on the client. Like with the WebService framework of ASP.NET on the server the details of communication over SOAP on the client are completely hidden from the developer and also the recurring code portion is only realized once in a central
